On the front page you can see the site is now tracking a total of 10,130,511 unique accounts. (Side point, it’s an awesome resource if you’re into the game and want more detailed stats).

Simply incredible. The game hasn’t even been in open beta for two full weeks. Massive congrats to the team, and very much deserved. Coming off of a fantastic Evo showing too. Come join the fun if you haven’t alrea

More players in the FGC is a good thing. The best additions to my local are smash players who branched out into games I play. Congratulations to WB.

Smash is stuck on shitty hardware with no rollback netcode and horrible matchmaking, that’s probably why
Smash is 1080p@60fps basically locked, hardware is not an issue...

But yeah, online is just the worst I've ever played in any online game and that's counting even other Nintendo games with barely any online functionalities or barely any quality control on their online department. It's sad to me because due to socialist government making living virtually impossible, most of my friends and I are spread over different countries and cannot reunite to play anymore physically... Put on top of that the Switch bottom line quality wifi... We could be playing so much if it wasn't for that, Smash es always our go to game and ended up being our last resort for nostalgia due to online being so unbelievably bad.

Even then, playing a game like multiversus is a non-option... Maybe some casual matches but I can't see myself getting into it, it's just too floaty and I can't feel the collisions made on hits of that makes sense to you...

They'll always have their fan base now, but smash just feels different, it's no smash substitute by any mean.

imma say it, this games trash - why tf are people playing it. It's the most basic ass game and i hate how the characters are locked.

I'll never get why its popular atm, just play smash - it's better.
I unlocked the most "expensive" character/s within an hour. Smash is locked to Switch and Nintendo charges for new characters. I can play this for free and have fun with mates across platforms. Smash ain't got nothing on Multiversus.

I was just thinking about this.

Like why is this game so well received but Brawlhalla basically bombed? (I haven't played either of them)

Is it just because of the license?

SRB2Kart is a free to play game that's a copy of Mario Kart and it never once got 10 million players (you probably never even heard of it until now if i'm being honest)
clearly Multiversus is doing SOMETHING right

SRB2Kart doesn't have WB money behind it or a Steam page either.

Amazing how an indie project doesn't have the same player base (or awareness) as one that has a multimillion dollar company behind it.

I heard it's already being featured at EVO, so it's doing SOMETHING right. Though right now Iron Giant and Lebron James are banned characters at EVO apparently, and I get why: Iron Giant's moveset is OPed as hell right now and no one gives a crap about Lebron James.

The thing is, I'm enjoying it. The game adds just enough to be similar but has some unique elements to it to stand out. And it's multiplatform with cross play, which is a HUGE deal when a lot of games can't even say they have that feature. Though I wish it would display my chosen name for the game when I am on different platforms instead of showing my PSN name I wish Sony would let you change already (ten years and they STILL won't let us do that?).

Most of all, right now, I'm not finding anyone online that got super pro and super cheap and super rude about doing so. The online play seems to be fair right now. We'll see how much that holds up over time since we know how fighting games online can go without sensible matchmaking.

I only played Brawlhalla early on. What I didn't like about it was each fighter had access to two weapons, and all characters were just those weapon move sets. The game never really felt like Smash, either, and I never got into it. Multiversus feels a whole lot like Smash, outside of a few aspects.

There's no grab or block buttons in Multiversus. In their place, you can dodge. You can jump twice, dodge twice in the air, and do two air attacks in the air. It gives you a lot of options. Aside from that, there's a focus on 2 vs 2 team fighting, and characters can even support one another. There are some other small differences too, but those are the main ones. Probably the most important thing is the netcode is great. Most of the time it feels like I'm playing with a friend on the couch next to me, and that's huge.

Good news. You've been able to do that for years now. Go nuts.

I think the actual reason is because they're newer characters that people in the alpha didn't have a chance to play as yet. And yeah, they're not done with development. Even in the standard game, they're listed as "experimental."

I'm happy the game is successful due to pushing rollback and crossplay.

Even if I do think the game is pants, but I feel this away about all platform fighters/children's party fighters.

I'm also super pumped that sf6 & kofxv will have crossplay & rollback, Tekken 8 best have it too!

Just wish they would let us play couch co-op with a guest account. I don't need to create fake accounts for my kids to play
Isn't this how only only games work on console? Like at the start you're logging in to the server with your account, you're not offline and then connecting to the server when you play with someone else; there's no offline mode.
Sounds odd if the devs specifically programmed it to work that way on console, because there's no requirement to make any kind of account for other players in local play on PC.

Deserved. It's a well executed, very polished game with a solid foundation. A Smash clone that hits the right notes backed by WB's vast IP library. I can definitely see it having legs. Personally I'm looking forward to the leaked boomer characters like Fred Flintstone & Gizmo.

Game is awesome. I've been playing it these past few days a lot with friends.

I played the game for 1 round and noped out. I guess I'm counted. There didn't seem to be a way to just fight with a group of friends and I don't like these games enough to not play with friends. The combat is just too inferior to smash for me to want to play it more outside of just casual play with friends.

Agreed. It just feels like a poor man’s Smash. The netcode is really nice tho.

It has Batman and Scooby Doo in it?

It's just as you said: barely anyone has heard about SRB2Kart, whereas Multiversus has the entire marketing team of WB putting money where it matters (see: the 100k EVO price).

(from what I can find online, this kart game is also a mod... of a mod... of Mario Kart 64, so obviously it's pretty obscure as far as the main public is concerned)

That’s fantastic, happy for the devs. It’s great to see a Smash Bros. type fighter get this kind of reception imo.

It has always been very strange that so few have attempted to make a Smash-clone in the past. These type of fighting games are the most fun in the entire genre imo.

I must say i really like it. I did buy Smash on Switch, but i could not play 1 match without any lag, so i gave up pretty quickly.

Good start! Not super impressive for a free to play game. There’s no barrier to entry. The question is will it retain players or be lost to time? I tried playing it and was super unimpressed. The graphics on next-gen seem not good at all. And I was surprised at the obvious copycatting off of Smash Bros to the point of it even having the same font style in the HP boxes.

Obviously these are people who just booted the game once but never played, right? That’s always the excuse used when other games report huge player numbers.

Good on them but the true test for F2P games isn't initial player count but rather being able to maintain a big active player base over time..
Hopefully they do, it isn't perfect but it's still pretty fun in 2Vs2 with a friend and unlike smash it's actually playable online.

I'll never get why its popular atm, just play smash - it's better.

Smash is better but it's also only available on a single platform which is $299, the game itself is $60 or around $115 if you want all the DLC characters, then you need to pay another $20 a year for the privilege of accessing the online multiplayer which works like crap.

so most peoples counter arguments are it was at EVO, its not on a single platform, and it has better online? That doesn't really indicate that the game is good, the characters have 4 moves (punch, jump, special move, dodge), surviving a fall or knockout is super super easy compared to smash. I just see the game as annoying, it's like the fortnite (without building) of fighting games.

I guess i answered my own question, people play it cause its easy to play and pickup. How long will that last?

Look man, that's cool and all that the game is being played by a lot of people but we always have this "flavor of the season" kind of game (fall guys, among us, etc) and then people move to something else. And after playing this game, even smash 64 has better gameplay so I don't see the longevity.

They're adding 15 additional characters over the next year, plus there are the battle pass unlocks which keep people playing these type of games. Smash had the DLC fighters, but nothing like a battle pass that add new cosmetic effects and costumes.

Some characters hitbox are jank aka finns backpack and Superman in general lol. I think it's because smash classifies hits as collision and this game just lets the hits power thru regardless if it's a weak vs strong hit. So it throws the balance off imo.

I find it funny that for YEARS Smash has been insulted by "real" fighting game fans as a dumb, shallow, kiddie game that's only successful because it's easy to pickup and play. And the moment some Smash fans are given the chance, some of them are using the exact same criticisms of Smash when criticizing this game.

I think a lot of Smash fans are just happy to have an option with new characters, different gameplay mechanics, and good online play. Personally, I like both games. And yes, Smash is still the better game in a lot of ways.

At least some of them are. I think a lot of Smash fans are happy to have an option with new characters, different gameplay mechanics, and good online play.
On the other hand, a lot of those "real fighting game fans" are jumping ship en masse now that there's a non-Nintendo alternative. There are idiots on both sides of the spectrum, sadly.

I honestly wouldn't mind if they ripped Smash's mechanics almost 1:1. Anything less just feels...off.

As much as I give Nickelodeon credit for trying its just not as tight or smooth as Smash. I doubt anything ever will be.

I mean, it checks all the boxes for a successful brawler and does many core things better than Smash does:

Solid gameplay ✅
Popular characters and IP’s ✅
Good netcode ✅
On almost every major platform ✅
Extremely low input delay on all platforms ✅
Crossplay ✅
Free to play ✅
Developer interacting with the community on social media ✅

No surprise it's successful so far.

Only one question remains.

Will the multiversus community know basic hygiene?

But will Multiversus players really be a part of the fighting game community if they all smell nice and at least half of their top players don't get accused of sexual harassment?
