Steamでの販売を目指しております。みんなでロボットを動かして共闘したり競ったりできるゲームを作りたいと思っています!

We're aiming for a Steam release and want to make a game in which everyone can coop/compete in high octane robot action!

These guys started a Muv-Luv fangame, and are aiming to get their project onto Steam. That page is for contributing to this project.

Muv-Luv was originally a visual novel trilogy by the company Âge. It's one of the best-selling visual novel series of all time, and the Total Eclipse anime that aired a little while back is an adaptation of one of the random spinoffs. The original story hasn't been animated yet - it's made up of Muv-Luv Extra, Unlimited and Alternative (Alternative is the one that everyone gets excited about. Imagine a mixture of Gundam and Starship Troopers.) There was a recent kickstarter for an official localization, although it's been fan-translated for years now:

Anyway, so yeah, the TSFs, or Tactical Surface Fighters, are just ripe for a good game where you play as one.

The Tank-class BETA seen here obviously don't have any final animations right now. The HUD is also less fleshed out than TSF Forefront's. They're making progress though, quite quickly from what I can tell. I also really like how UE4's PBR workflow is making this look. Makes it look a lot more realistic than the flat-ish lighting of TSF Forefront.

What IS TSF Forefront, you ask? There was ANOTHER Muv-Luv fan game with TSFs in development?

Yes, there is.
Here's an old thread about it:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=827467

I initially made this thread about thinking it was TSF Forefront, but it's not.

Gif related - For anyone unaware, TSF Forefront was a fan-made game by a group called Little Meteor, based on the Muv-Luv franchise. The team working on TSF Forefront announced a while back that they were moving to UE4 for development. It's been ages since we heard from them.

This particular project said they were moving to UE4 in 2014 or so, but there haven't been any updates from them in a while.

Nice to know this is still alive!
I always wanted to try this out so thanks for the heads up Dio.

Yeah, I'm sorry. It's not the TSF Forefront guys, specifically - I don't think they've given us an update since 2014.

This dude seem to be working a lot faster than the TSF Forefront guys ever did, which was at a glacial pace.

I already PMed a mod about the title change.

It's all good.

So old team was Little Meteors and they decided to switch to UE4 and then no word or news from them in a couple years and now this new guy/cicle has started their own project with hopes to get it to steam? Are you sure it's the TSF game they are trying to get on steam and not the roguelike game they seem to be making as well? I can't read jp just using google translate.

No matter either way, just working towards a playable game with TSF's is good enough for me.

Yeah, you've got the idea.

This:

is saying this:

Still confused as to what's happening but shoutouts to my old thread in the OP.

Yeah, I'm sorry about that. Maybe I should reformat the whole OP. I PMed a mod about a title change for the thread.

Basically, this has nothing to do with TSF Forefront and I initially made the thread thinking this was them. It's a totally different team making a TSF game in UE4 and releasing development progress videos over the last couple months. They're aiming for Steam.

Oh okay. For some reason I always attach "TSF" to that doujin game rather than Muv Luv itself, so when I saw TSF on the crowdfunding site I just assumed it was the same guys despite your OP saying otherwise.

Not so confusing once the title gets changed, I think.

Right, right. Besides, I think this particular project is a little more exciting to me than Forefront, because TSF Forefront has been in development hell for so long it's almost like a Last Guardian of fan games. The quick progress THIS project is going at makes me a lot more optimistic about this one's future.

That being said, I wonder if AGE will even let them sell this on Steam.

They're actually trying to make this a commercial product and not a free fan game? Yeah, that sounds like a C&D waiting to happen.

I assume so. They're already asking for money to support the development on their page:

https://www.enty.jp/nullpodesu

I assume they want to sell it on Steam in the end. Who knows, maybe it WILL be free on Steam, but I really, really, doubt it.

EDIT:

Ah, and there we go. Fantastic. That's the title I wanted.

Oh right.

There actually is a video with Tank, Destroyer and Grappler-classes in it. They don't really have any proper hitboxes or animations yet, though.

Man, seeing Laser classes in action will be a trip when they get there.

You had me at EDF.

Well, like I said, MLA is like a mix of Starship Troopers and Gundam and various other things. Hell, they even give a tribute to the Klendathu Drop. As EDF is, in my opinion, the most accurate videogame version of Starship Troopers I figured I might as well put it in the title, since the experience of fighting thousands of BETA at once is probably a hell of a lot like EDF.

Definitely intrigued. So for someone who knows nothing about this series, what path would you suggest to understand the back story?

Subbed. I need my mech itch scratched and this looks good. Since it's coming to steam, is it safe to assume that there's a high possibility of it coming west?

Well, an official localization of the original trilogy is coming down the pipes, but there's a full fan translation of it already available. I'd recommend just going through it. Extra, then Unlimited, then Alternative.

Can they release it despite not owning the rights?

I have no idea. Maybe? I guess they'd have to ask Age first.

I'm sold.

I might as well update with what the guy's up to, since the thread was bumped.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvUOl7ZTH-Y

It appears he's learning a lot about UE4 - this video was uploaded 5 days ago, and it's a helicopter dodging missiles. It seems to be from a 4-hour game jam he participated in. A new video hasn't been uploaded regarding the game the thread's about for a couple months, but that's normal if he's not actually planning on keeping up video updates for people interested.

Update:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ApQ6TVhEu0

Guns actually seem to fire now. I haven't looked at this in about a year and that vid's from August, so I'm slow, but I also checked the Enty.

5Qsw1yH.png

The latest update seems to be Feb 2017 on the Enty page.

They are distributing the prototype for 1000 yen, or about 9 bucks. Would be interested in acquiring a copy of it so I can see exactly where it's at.

Apparently even the materials/settings they're using for the projects are available. Wondering if a PBR workflow with something like Allegorithmic plugged into UE4 is what they're using.

Those gifs look awesome. Finishing Muv-Luv Extra right now so I can't look too into it right now. I just know I'll be spoiled after a recent incident with Persona 5. Muv-Luv's the only thing that I have that remains untainted.
