If it's a passing away, then just do what he wants. Don't try to force him to be upbeat, that kind of thing won't work right now. He's allowed to be down in the dumps and feel bad. Just be there for him and do what he wants. He says he wants to eat a tub of ice cream, let the man do it. Etc.

If it's a break up, then he still deserves to be down in the dumps, just go over with some brews and hang out and watch a movie. If he feels like going to a bar and hitting on a new girl. Then do that.
