Are you purposely being obtuse? What part of retaining value do you not understand?

Yes, if you buy Spider-Man for 40, and sell it for 20, it isn't that different.

But follow me here, why would you buy Spider-Man at $40 if you could wait a month or two and get it at 20? By your own logic, it makes sense to wait for the price collapse.
I'm sorry, but not everyone is interested or cares.

The value to the consumer is the ability to resale over a longer period of time, because it retains higher value in the resell market. I could buy Zelda at launch for 60, hold it on to it for years, and sell it at 45. I don't need to wait a year for it to drop to $40. This really isn't diffucult.

No one is commenting on just the ability to sell a game. That is missing the point.
The only one being obtuse is you...the $40 for Spiderman is an example if you can get it for $20 even better which is my point. The point is you can't buy Zelda new for less than $60 but you can buy Spiderman new for $30 it doesn't matter if you buy it at launch or not because its still 60 lmao. What do you not get?. If you've bought Zelda for $60 if you get $45-$33 for it you've lost $15-$27 if I bought Spiderman 3-4 months after launch for $35 you could be selling it now for $23-$17 a lost of $8-$18 which is possible because the they put the game on sale...I am not talking about tthosewho bought it at Launch for $60.

Even if they were a massive prick about it (which I'm not seeing here, to be honest), it's pretty sad to hold your "friend" up to the ridicule of strangers on the internet just because they're douchey in one area of their lives. Nobody's perfect. If it bothers you that much, stop being friends. If not, better to keep it to yourself then throw them under the bus, even anonymously.

However weird their identification with a gaming company that doesn't know they exist (and don't get me wrong, it's freaking weird), your post strikes me as even more pathetic.

This is what gets me. OP obviously has a history with the person, so there are probably other, more damning exchanges out there. But just going off of what we have here, it looks like the friend is making fun of how some AAA games don't hold their value, which isn't exactly an edgy opinion. The running joke on GAF is that you wait a week after launch and get any Ubisoft game 50% off. *shrug*
Yea thats what my conclusion was as well

Agree with the general sentiment here. Fanboys are some of the worst and most annoying people out there. Same is true of people with absurd corporate loyalty to brands in other hobbies or whatever as well. But it's also not a good luck to hold a friend up to ridicule online as some others have stated.

If someone annoyed me that much, I'd just stop being friends with them if they couldn't take some hits to stop ranting about fanboy/corporate loyalty nonsense. The older I get, the more misanthropic I get and the less patience I have for staying friends/handing out with people who I don't truly enjoy being around and talking to. Having a smaller social circle of close friends who I can have great conversations with has made me way happier than having a bunch of acquaintances hanging around that annoyed me as often or not, trying to maintain friendships from high school and before who were people I just had nothing in common with anymore as they never left our redneck home town and I got the hell out of dodge ASAP after graduation etc.

If you buy Zelda at launch, and held the game with a resale value of 45 bucks for multiple years, than that is worth more than Spider-Man.

Jesus christ.

You buy Zelda for 60 bucks, you sell it, let's say 3 years later for 45. You only lost 15 bucks and you had the game for 3 years.

Now let's take Spider-Man, it comes out at 60,
And in a year, it retails at $40.

Now, you say "oh oagboghi2 you dummy, just wait for the price drop" okay fine I refuse to buy a game I want for a whole year to save money. I buy the game a year later, at 40...but why? The resale value of that game is now half of that $40. If I can wait a year, why not wait 2? Why not just continue to wait for it to hit $30, or $25 or $20.

and that will happen...but the resale value also falls. So if sell that game I bought for $40, and sell it at 20, I lost 5 bucks as compared to if it kept it's value and I sold it for $45. If I wait even longer and buy it at 25, and have to sell it at 18 or 15, I lose even more money. The lower the value, the less I can recoup.

now, the counter argument might be "well, if you wait, you save money on the initial purchase" and sure that makes sense, kinda, if you want to wait 1, 2, or 3 years.

or, if the resale value remains high, I can buy the product when I want, and resell it, gaining back much of what I initially spent. I got to spend more time with the game and spent less money than you did. That's the value to the consumer.

Sometimes he even buys 2 copies of a single game on the switch at full price because a physical copy leaked early but he already pre-ordered the digital version. The thing I want to know is, why would anyone shit on AAA games getting cheap or having a sale? Isn't games getting cheaper a good thing since it's more accessible to people. I'd be so happy if some of the games I want get a discount.

And why would anyone be proud to pay full price for their games? He is so proud that Nintendo games never drop in price. And he often shits on AAA games except for Nintendo games. saying that they all play the same way (He's referring to Playstation exclusives because he hates Sony.) The name that I blocked in red is the Nintendo fanboy. He also often tells people to not buy Playstation exclusives and wait till they are $10 and that Playstation exclusives all play the same way and only lasts for 5 hours. Today he's shitting on AAA games calling them "no value".

He is a moron imo part of the reason my switch hasn't been turned on in over a year is this reason. Coincidentally yesterday I told my son "damn we hvnt played switch in awhile maybe I'll pick up ultimate smash bros so we can play" checked online lol saw it was still full price and was like "fuck outta here thy won't be getting my money" 😂 😂 😂

I bought Demon Souls for 15 after its release and it was hundreds of hours of enjoyment and one of the best games I played. Same with Days Gone and some other games. I'm not heavily into Nintendo games so thy have to do something to draw me in and not dropping prices really limits what I buy. I bought Botw for 60 wish I didn't, Mario for 60 and enjoyed it buttt not into Mario games tht much anymore. The one game I can say deserved my full price was Mario Kart and thts on its billionth version.

Does your friend's opinion about this matter? You might want to rethink your approach with this if you consider him your friend. If he saw this thread, would you two still be cool?

I will say I enjoy that a lot of Nintendo's games tend to keep their value longer than other platforms, just from being the walled garden it is -- sometimes being worth more used than I paid for them new. Ever check prices on Bravely Default or Solatorobo? Yiiiiiikes. Even their Pokemon titles keep their value pretty steady, years later.
He visits resetera only, especially the Media Create threads. He doesn't like gaf due to it being dominated by Sony fanboys according to him. He also hates Michael Pachter because he used to talk shit about Nintendo in the past. (I actually enjoy watching Pachter Factor and prefer the longer format instead of the current short ones. And I miss his ramblings about whisky. Lol)

think he'd hate you lol. You'd have to be pure Nintendo. Right now he's chummy with Xbox fans. He was hoping so hard for Stadia to kill Sony and now that stadia is a flop, he's pinning all hopes on Xbox and Nintendo to kill Sony.

He really hates Capcom at the moment because they aren't doing a Monster Hunter for Switch.

This was his post when Stadia was announced. Previously he'd outright slam Sony and shit talk Sony on social media and he'd get a lot of flak for it (saying how Playstation games only last for 5 hours and how they look and play the same). Now he only shit talks Sony in our private chat groups.
Notice he said Typical Gaming Console. Meaning Xbox and PlayStation but he was being dishonest and smart. In our chatgroups he was talking about how Sony is going to die and be obsolete and how they are going to be irrelevant and run out of business.

On that very same day he was talking about Microsoft and Nintendo joining forces to kill Sony after the announcement of Cuphead on the Switch.

It's just the market.
The AAA market is an highly competitive, crowded space where companies compete against each other in an highly aggressive way.

Nintendo have their market, their consumer base, so your friend is just comparing apples to oranges.
When Nintendo release a new Zelda game it will not have much competion on their platform.
A new AAA on PS/XB/PC needs to make bank fast, before another big title hits the market a month or two later. TLou2 needs to sell fast, there's a Ghost of Tsushima ready to be shipped, and after that Avengers and Cyberpunk are also coming, and then beware of the holiday big hitters like Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty and company. Microsoft has a new Halo too joining the race. And of course there are plenty of titles between all these.

Good luck selling only at full price against a constant stream of new releases. Competition makes prices go down and that's is inevitable in an healthy, competitive market.
Exactly, and the consumer wins because if your like me and have no time to play games to justify spending £50 on a new game just because you want to be part of the launch day party, 3 months later you get to pick it up for half price.

I suppose it helps reselling since the games are always $40-60 even after years. If you buy a non-Nintendo game for $60 and try to resell it 6 months after it came out you'll get like $5.

That's about the only positive I can think of though for Nintendo games never dropping in price.

My friend doesn't think of it this way.

He encourages people to get Nintendo games digitally so that in his own words "Nintendo can get your money directly".

If you buy physical discs, Nintendo won't earn as much as the retailers get a cut etc.

How would Cuphead being on Switch hurt PlayStation? All it does is give PS4 + Switch owners one fewer reason to get Xbox.

Cuphead is great btw.

I'm just amazed at how much you like to talk about him.
Because he gives us so many things to talk about. Everyone who comes into contact with him, friends of friends all know about his obsession with Nintendo. Nintendo is the first thing he talks about when he wakes up and the last thing he talks about before he goes to bed. I don't even want to ask if he wears Mario underwear.

And our whatsapp messages are filled with Nintendo pictures, Nintendo news, turnip prices in Animal Crossing and he has invited a few people who aren't in our clique into the group because they are also Nintendo fanboys and now our whatsapp group is insufferable. It's just full of Nintendo and so much PlayStation hate.

I think it's ok to be a fanboy but don't hate on other games.

So even after some of the pictures/chat logs I posted you think I'm faking this whole thing?

There are a lot of Nintendo fans who are proud that prices of Nintendo games don't drop. They are here. They are at resetera. They are everywhere.

My friend is just another one of them. Just that his love for Nintendo is next level.
We can only hope that they are all as fortunate as your friend. It's not every fanboy who is lucky enough to have an acquaintance publicly stalk them back to their senses.

Some of you act like the OP posted his friend's full name, picture, phone number and address.
Reverse image lookup is a thing. Even if it wasn't though, how incredibly petty do you have to be to make an entire discussion board about your "friend"? Just block their number and move the hell on with your life.

Your friend is a great example of what a company can do when it has the good will of its customers. Probably a lot of hardcores here will disagree because they do not think such good will is warranted; but is not your annoyance with their fanatical good will evidence that such a good will exists?

Nintendo's approach to pricing AAA games isn't better or worse than the other publishers. It's just different. Nintendo keeps their games full price for years because the games keep selling for years. To them, Mario Odyssey is as new now as it was 3 years ago. Nintendo platforms are primarily driven by first party games, so Nintendo prefers to milk the demand for these games for as long as they can. Whether you agree with this practice or not is up to you, but there's a very good reason why they do it. It's not like the results don't show either. Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 still regularly make the top ten despite being 3 years old.

That said, I really do wish Nintendo would embrace the concept of releasing complete editions of their games with all the DLC baked in. Keep it full price if you want, but BotW still being $60 on top of a $20 DLC pack sold separately is kind of ridiculous.

It's no secret that Nintendo

a) Makes the best games in the world, and
b) Make games that stay at RRP because they're the best games in the world

But to limit yourself solely to Nintendo is to deny yourself a lot of great games

Video game "value" is an argument that is too subjective. So saying that one opinion is better than the other is meaningless. You're friend had a point yet so do his detractors. No one is worse than the other.

There is more then one definition of value.

Value I get as a consumer paying $5 for 40 hours of entertainment

Vs

Monetary value of buying a game for $60 and its keeping relative value and selling it for $55 1 year later.

It’s weird to see two people both be right but both be complete idiots about it.

If a game quickly goes on sale, the resale value plummets. Pretty obviously bad if you plan ever recouping back some of the loss.

The value of something is only worth as much as you're willing to pay for it. We often pay more for things out of convenience or for immediate gratification. Also, don't forget the time investment it takes to sell something. If you want to make more, you'll have to take time to prep and sell your item, ship it, and deal with any of the crap that may come with that.

It's always been a balance of "you'll pay less if you wait" in this market and being able to play the games sooner that you want to, but at a higher cost. You will pay more for a game with the knowledge that it will quickly depreciate. The thing with Nintendo is the games seem to hold a stable price for longer, at least in the first party exclusive market. I personally game on PS4/Switch/PC and move between all three platforms pretty consistently, and I've double-dipped between all of them. I don't hold any in higher regard than others because they all have pros and cons to their hardware and ecosystems. I rarely sell any of my games, and often give titles I've finished to friends or to people that might not have the same income situation. At the end of the day, the way we invest and approach this hobby is really personal and singular, and all of it is valid.

In my whatsapp groups, my friends talk about him too. And friends of friends talk about him too. Because his behaviour is so funny and entertaining, it's verging on parody. I have a friend who just talks to me about him about 70% of our conversation. Because it really is that funny.

A Alter_Fridge He buys games digitally because in his words, "Nintendo gets his money directly" instead of retail getting a cut.

For me I buy games digitally because of convenience and the game unlocks at 12 midnight so I can start playing right away. I have never once thought about making sure my money goes directly to Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo. *shrugs*

Sony should start keeping their games at $60 and only release one a gen for each franchise. Nintendo figured out the profitable way a while ago. Also make them more social media friendly and less cinematic since that seems to work for Nintendo and will save on costs

In my whatsapp groups, my friends talk about him too. And friends of friends talk about him too. Because his behaviour is so funny and entertaining, it's verging on parody. I have a friend who just talks to me about him about 70% of our conversation. Because it really is that funny.
Your friends are as obsessed with him as you are?
