My Wii U experience thus far is REALLY starting to bum me out :(

Not sure any system has been as disappointing to owners as the Wii U.

Yes. I was thinking this today. This is the first time I've ever bought a system and have seriously regretted it. It's an okay machine performance wise with a great controller. Unfortunately, Nintendo have incredibly badly managed this console and to be honest. I feel they have outright lied to me with their PR bullshit about great 3rd party support.

VC, Monster Hunter 3 Ult, Lego City UC, Toki Tori 2, Rayman Legends Challenges App, a little bit of Miiverse or Wii Street U ?

I was thinking the same thing. I think a lot of gamers around here play the wii u sucks card too much just for the sake of the forum. Im not saying wii u doesnt have its issues but these extremes about nothing to play comments are just too far fetch.

I got one as a christmas present so i can't complain to much but i find myself playing backlog wii games on it instead of wii u games.

Got Donkey Kong Country Returns, Metroid Prime Other M and Resident Evill 4 Wii Edition to play until something decent comes out on it.

Zero interest in lego games, played the star wars ones ages ago on ps2 and i see nothing exciting or different about the new ones.

Ok, but that didn't exactly happen with the N64 and Gamecube. All I am saying is that releasing a 3D Mario game, a Smash Bros., Zelda, Mario Kart, etc is not a guaranteed success that people make it out to be.

Indeed it is not a guaranteed success. Especially the timing of these games...they should have not released the Wii U before they could present a new, innovative Zelda & Mario. It might be too late, but I guess we will see.

Define "far worse."

Worse launch collections; worse waiting time for decent games.

Shandy has a good list for ps3 titles already in the thread.

But I think in the case of ps2, if memory serves, Batman Vengeance was like the first decent title after launch only --a year-- later.

Sounds like Lego City has already done that for the WiiU, if you don't count Monster Hunter.

I know most people think when we say Wii U sucks we are just bashing it, but if you stop to think about it, it's really a terrible launch. I bought mine at launch based on Rayman Legends and Pikmin 3 since they were both in the launch window. Pikmin 3 is probably finished and they are just holding it back to drum up more support for the holidays and a price drop and it sucks because I was looking forward to that. I agree with several people here in saying that I just don't know if their usual games can pull them out of this nosedive. If Retro's game isn't something amazing and more mature, then I don't see Nintendo doing too well this time at all.

I think we as Gamers are just spoiled these days.

I've been playing a lot of retro games and it's quickly realized how much more difficult and unforgiving those games were and had to be.

It's also curious how quickly nostalgia and public amnesia sets in. Expectations with Nintendo are always out of balance with the gaming community imo, but seriously, does no one remember ps2 or ps3 launches for example?

Good lord, the initial droughts for those systems were far worse than the WiiU. But, perhaps for those examples people were just too mesmerized by the new-fangled DVD/BLURAY technology to remember.

It has nothing to do with "amnesia", or being spoiled. It's more of the fact that you're trying to rationalize why other people value their money much more than you do.

OP.

Get a seven year old daughter. My Wii U is used weekly if not daily. She loves Nintendoland and if Ubisoft hadn't been shitty, my daughter would be playing Rayman.

My wife loves Netflix on the Wii U and it get's used that way often.

I love Monster Hunter Ultimate and I've put over a hundred hours into it.

So...know why you're buying a console. I don't mean "you" specifically but I went in with pretty realistic expectations and I have zero buyer's remorse.

When Nintendo sent me an email about the most recent Wii U update being ready, I sent back a reply to nintendo@noa.nintendo.com that read simply: "Just in time for all the games we don't have to play." Childish and stupid sure, but I was feeling annoyed and frustrated with the whole thing at the time.

I got this response from Nintendo Consumer Service:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback regarding our latest system update for our Wii U. I can certainly understand your thoughts on wanting more games to be available for this system and want you to know how much we appreciate you sending them in. I also want to assure you that your comments will be added to our records for this update and made available for other departments at the company to use as they see fit.

Keep an eye on the "What's New" section of our website for any new information about our products..

When I complete those Nintendo Club surveys for the games I've purchased for the Wii U and 3DS consoles, I make sure to mention the disappointing software situation. Probably won't make much difference but I feel like it's just about our only voice. In the end though, I don't worry about the system. There will be great Nintendo games and I will love them. I also love playing VC and U games on the Gamepad.

Depends on the launch date you use (JP had it almost 6 months earlier IIRC) but it launched for the holidays of 2000. There wasn't much during the first few months but GT3 hit during the summer of 2001 and the next holiday season saw the releases of exclusives such as Silent Hill 2, GTA3, DMC, Jak and ICO which easily demonstrated the value of the machine. Then the console hit its stride and the releases pretty much didn't stop.

WiiU's launch library was okayish for launch but let's not pretend it has the software outlook PS2 had by this time in 2001.

you have to wonder what's going on at Nintendo. Did they really think the console could be carried by 3rd party ports of old games? And that's why they don't have any games ready for the WiiU?

They supported the Wii to the last breath. SMG 2 was a big bonus, and it would not have surprised me if Skyward Sword would have been cancelled & made for Wii U instead.

While I truly salute Nintendo for being so supportive until the end, it might have left some things burnt out.

They fucked it up and they know it. It has been clear for a while that they decided to focus their efforts on the later half of 2013 instead of pushing out half-finished titles that wouldn't do much good on their own.

That's been the weird thing about Nintendo's customer service. They will respond back when it comes to questions, concerns, or just negative feedback about the software situation. Granted it might be a stock response that a person selects but the very fact they have one tailored like this is something.

Well, Wii didn't have a graceful death. I mean, it had no major 1st party support in 2011 until the holiday season as far as North America goes and barely any third party support to speak of. 2012 had some in the first half of the year, but some of those games like Xenoblade, should have come out the year before like it did for Europe. Skyward Sword was far too long in development for Nintendo to switch platforms or do an oddball dual release of it in SD on an HD console. Also, even if they moved it to Wii U or did it for both platforms, it would have taken development time away from Link to the Past 2 and Wind Waker Remake.

I've been enjoying mine a lot. I love NSMBU. Playing BLOPS 2 from the pad while my wife watches some tv worth the price alone. Zombie U is the best survival horror I've played in years and a really atmospheric and immersive game. NFSMWU is a blast to play and looks ver nice. And I'm getting MH next week.

And the best is yet to come.

Awesome system.

Me too. If not for the GamePad I would not play console games anymore. It's just too attractive to resist, laying on its craddle in the middle of my house :)

I wonder if this is something they can fix? I've had this happen a few times in youtube.

Much less lately, though.

Was wondering this myself I streamed a few youtube videos over the weekend and nothing went wrong I plan on watching a few things on hulu and netflix tonight so hopefully no issues since last time I streamed was before the last update I believe

Truth

Folks like to make that arguement, "oh, first year blues," but nah, actually we got some quality shit early on. I was personally blown away by Ghost Recon Warfighter, The Outfit, and Oblivion.

I had both consoles pretty close to launch and for me, most those games weren't worth getting. I bought COD, DOA, Fight Night, Ghost Recon, and Oblivion. Oblivion was shit IMO and it was when I realized listening to GAF as to what is fun was typically a bad idea. DOA was pretty mediocre. I loved the other 3 games though. For the PS3 I rented Motorstorm and it sucked IMO. I bought a Wii about 3 or so years in it's the only console I purchased where I never had buyers remorse.

It's the reason why I haven't bought a Wii U yet. Right now there's about 3 or so games I really want for the Wii U, but I'm not getting until Q4 the earliest and there's a nice library of games out, and I won't be getting a PS4 until well into 2014. I'm not touching Xbox hardware with a 10-foot pole.

Console launches always suck. Shitty games, shitty hardware, and shitty software. I'll let you guys beta test for me. I went through 5 360's and had to endure the god awful original PSN store. I've earned my stripes, I'm sitting this one out.

i am hearing all kinds've shit for the first time today

Well, i can't say that i agree (though a lot of quality games i've played were PSN games).
I can say that i think you are just limiting yourself for some crazy reason. But as long as you play what YOU want, then fine.

Resistance, inFamous and Uncharted were underwhelming. I didn't limit myself at all.

This whole "general consensus" attitude is what is crazy.

I love the Wii U. And Most Wanted hasn't froze on me once. I would say All Star Racing Transformed, Most Wanted U, Mass Effect 3, Monster Hunter, and NSMBU are the best games for it right now. I'm currently playing through ME3 and haven't had a single problem.

To date, the following has happened since I bought a Wii U in March:

- Bought Sonic Transformed and ended up selling it when I came to really appreciate how the Vita version is more or less the DeFacto Mario Kart now. It looks almost as good and I can take it everywhere. Also, Wii U version performance leaves a bit to be desired. Runs subHD despite being on hardware that came out last year. PS3 version runs native 720p though with minimal tearing.

- Am selling off Most Wanted U since the damn game freezes 3 out of 5 times, when I play it

- Sold of New Super Mario U and have since wrote off that franchise entirely. Had played all of them up to that point. Definition of soulless, excellent platforming or not

- Bought Arkham City. Sold it a couple of days later as I could not get past the lameness of the port. The Micro-stutter/judder made me want to vomit.

- As we all know, OS shipped with an embarrassingly slow OS. Even after Update, it still manages to hang in some parts.

- Virtual console launch.... yeah

+ Gamepad ended being more comfortable than i ever could have imagined!

+ Lego City Undercover ends up being pretty much the best game we own. Wife is in love with it. Probably the best in the franchise

+ Virtual console wrapper is quality stuff

+ Monster Hunter Ultimate. Best version bar none

- Monster Hunter Ultimate looks like shit outside it's art direction/animation

- I discover you can't play Wii/VC games in 4:3 mode UNLESS you: Change resolution to 480p in Wii U settings menu. Manually change aspect ratio as well. You CANNOT do any of this in Wii menu itself.

- I come to realize the cold, hard, bitch of a truth that 3rd parties DO NOT give a fuck about the system. Once again, Nintendo dropped the ball and made yet another damn Gamecube. Fascinating really that their investors and such put up with this

+ Lego Batman 2 comes out later this month. I'm looking forward to that as I can play coop with different screens!... Should I be ashamed of myself?

One could say, "Bro, the games are coming!" .... Doesn't make me feel any less defeated in a way. I was completely aware of the state of things before I bought it (well at least how they were in March), but I had NO IDEA how it would just spiral into.... well this.

I... I just don't know what to think anymore :(
I barely touch the fucking thing now. Everytime I glance at the eShop, I shake my head and turn the system off. Everytime it takes upwards of 30 seconds or more to get back to the OS after quiting YouTube, I roll my eyes. Every Nintendo Direct, "Please Understand" just loops in my head. Everytime i read some new comment from a 3rd party developer or glance at the NPDs and press... I ...I just don't know what to think

This system really is in trouble isn't it? Like, this isn't just a small slow period. This isn't another 3DS foul up that a ambassador program, price drop and Mario Kart 7/3DLand are gonna fix.

thanks for reading

Wait until Christmas to decide.

It had a similar start as the 3DS and now the 3DS is getting tons of awesome games.

The rumors about Wii U are the same. Supposedly some really great stuff will come out at the end of the year. E3 should shed a little light on this.

I am enjoying the system.

Zombi U was a lot of fun
Mario is great
Nintendoland is fun for multiplayer
Lego City is really fun once you get a few missions in and get different abilities (costumes) and it is huge
Monster Hunter is huge and is time consuming
Need For Speed is the best version
Batman comes with the DLC for free
etc

I was not aware there are issues with sonic all stars. I have not played it but everything I've read about lead me to believe it was the best version. I also remember reading it had the highest framerate and looked slightly better than the other 2

We must have read diff articles because i read in several articles that it performed worse on wiiu.

I agree
lego city was a 25 more hours of pure fun, mario and mh are always on, runner 2 and toki tori are great and rayman app is a daily challenge
thee are issues, and I often post about them, but also moments of fun.
january and february were terrible

don't worry, they'll show gameplay of 3d mario and retro's game and mario kart, and then we'll see a week long circlejerk on gaf where people get way too excited over it, then we will be back here ragging on Nintendo. Just the way nature intended it to be.

Resistance, inFamous and Uncharted were underwhelming. I didn't limit myself at all.

I'm not for general consensus. But there is probably more for you to enjoy than the stuff you played. There are more disc exclusives than just Resistance inFamous and Uncharted. Not that it matters. I don't care about what you play or what you miss out on. I miss out on stuff too. As long as you are having fun.

First time playing monster hunter was on the Wii U demo and when I killed a big dinosaur-looking thing and saw the small run away I felt awful.

I'd still get the game

I held off on getting the game because of that exact reason. I didn't realize that I wasn't supposed to kill EVERYTHING I saw in the demo so I killed the same guy you did and left the baby alone. Then when I went back and tried again I came across the REAL monster and I was totally fine killing him.

I do like to tell myself that they don't die when you capture them, though. Helps me sleep.

Damn, that's one shit sandwich of a post. For all the laughs I've had at WiiU threads in the past month or two... it doesn't mask the cracks that posts like this reveal.

Sad really, I know I'd likely feel the same way. How people and investors can lie to themselves is quite astounding.

I wonder if this Naomi "person" is the only one responding to these emails.

Well guess verdicts out then.

Where is Fail Sonnen when you need him.

Wii U!
U absolutely SUCK!

i think moho 3 basically makes the system awesome singlehandedly. i've put far more hours into that than any other game this generation and it feels like i'm just getting started.

zombi u is pretty amazing too

Now that my Xbox Live Gold has expired, it has turned into a Netflix U. Watching Netflix on the crapper is pretty neat too =)

First-world perks.

As for games I'm only using it for parties to with Nintendoland and Mario U, can't wait for Mario Party and Smash Bros.
