NA - NES Classic Edition Launch Plans (The Power Line Returns Nov 11 to 13!)

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Like, oh my gosh! The ’80s are totally back and Nintendo is totally embracing them with the Nov. 11 launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system, which includes 30 classic NES games such as Super Mario Bros., Metroid, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Kirby’s Adventure and PAC-MAN. But it’s not just the launch of this awesome console that’ll crimp your hair and tight roll your jeans:

On the night of Nov. 10, fans who visit the Nintendo NY store in Rockefeller Plaza will have a blast in the past with an ’80s-themed launch event.

On launch weekend (Nov. 11-13), Nintendo is also bringing back its righteously nostalgic Power Line for three days only.

On Nov. 10 and Nov. 11, its social media channels will go completely retro to a time when “social media” involved trading passwords and game tips on the school bus.
Are you ready to go back in time? Grab your neon sunglasses and jelly bracelets. Things are about to get radical.

“Many of us have fond and wonderful memories of the original NES,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “With these launch activities for the NES Classic Edition, we want to replicate the nostalgic feelings of sitting down and playing the NES with your family for the first time.”

To kick off the launch, Nintendo will host a “Remembering #NESterday” social media takeover starting on Nov. 10. By using the #NESterday hashtag, Nintendo fans will be encouraged to share fond Nintendo gaming memories and even present-day photos with their old NES consoles. Some of these photos will be shared on Nintendo’s social media channels, and people will also be able to participate in a Twitter sweepstakes that will be just as tubular as you might expect.

On the night before the launch (Nov. 10) starting at 9 p.m. ET, Nintendo invites you (and anyone who wants to party like it’s 1985) to the Nintendo NY store for an ’80s-themed NES Classic Edition event. The first 250 visitors can play classic NES games, participate in a costume contest dressed as their favorite Nintendo characters or ’80s icons, and show off their NES knowledge in the ultimate retro Nintendo game show. When the clock ticks over to midnight on Nov. 11, the one-handed gloves come off and the NES Classic Edition will be available to purchase, while supplies last.

While playing one of the 30 great NES games included on the NES Classic Edition during the weekend following the Friday launch, you might find yourself puzzled by some of the more challenging games. (“How do I find the first Warp Whistle in Super Mario Bros. 3?” you might ask yourself.) If your memories of the original games fail you, no need to fret. You can just call the Power Line, which will return and run from Nov. 11 to Nov. 13, between the hours of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT each day. The original Power Line was a beloved service in the ’80s that connected fans to Nintendo Game Play Counselors who offered helpful tips and tricks. In this fully automated version, you can use your real-life phone (bonus points if it has a cord!) to dial (425) 885-7529 to hear recorded tips for several games, plus behind-the-scenes stories from original Nintendo Game Play Counselors. You never know what you might learn!

With 30 great NES games, a replica of the original NES controller, three display modes (including one that makes your fancy hi-def display look like a retro tube TV) and Suspend Points for easy on-the-spot saving, the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is a great value at a suggested retail price of only $59.99. Going all in! Sadly, as a Mexican fellow I won't have a chance to enjoy this, but I thought you gals and guys would dig this throwback extravaganza. In this age of massive trolling and whatnot, they've taken their precautions, though; as stated above, the service is fully automated. However, I'd very much love to call regardless, not because of the recorded tips (albeit I can imagine the nostalgia they'd bring) but because that bit about "behind-the-scenes stories from original Nintendo Game Play Counselors!" sounds really, really cool.

Thank God they have revealed the Switch already. I can only image the massive load of "Where is the NX?", "The Powerline is cool but my algorhythm needs NX news" stupid calls, if it were still a mistery.

It's the best they can do since they are not launching anything else (except Pokémon Sun and Moon of course) this holiday. Props for that. Too bad I'll pass on getting one since they will be ridiculously expensive here in Mexico : /

Just saw the price in Mexico. Insane that they're selling almost at twice the MSRP.

Oh, they're fully prepared, the service is automated. You get to hear recorded game tips, but also, and this is what I find cool, anecdotes from actual persons who were Nintendo Game Counselors back in the day. I'd call for that last bit alone.

I know right? 2000 pesos, give me a freaking break. I heard it's so far a tentative price and Gamers may have it for 1800; still BS of the highest caliber though. Here's hoping Amazon Mexico comes to the rescue here, because even if I could miraculously secure one from Amazon US, chances are they won't ship it here (they don't even ship amiibo anymore, sad times for me, great times for my wallet).

There's been a notorious change (for the better) since Doug Bowser took the reins. The fire test will come with Switch's marketing campaign.

Sort of want to record all of the automated hint line stuff for posterity if I'm extremely bored that day.

The while supplies last part of the press release doesn't really bode well for people wanting to get it. I hope Amazon and other retailers clarify when they're going to make them available online. I'd be surprised if this didn't end up like every other situation where retailers post them a half hour early and they're sold out before they're supposed to be on sale.

I'm still in shock and pissed about it. I understand the difference on the Dollar affects the prices of everything in here but this is insane indeed. Only Amazon can save us :(

I thought it would be 1,500 pesos max, but this is beyond ridiculous. Yeah our only hope is Amazon México :( If it wasn't for them, I would had quit gaming long time ago, Gamers, Gameplanet, Liverpool... all those stores are major bullshit now in selling videogames with those prices.

A friend made the argument that, since this is hardware, it qualifies as a luxury article, thus higher taxes, but the way I understand it, since it's being bought in bulk, they're getting it at much lower prices than the MSRP to begin with. I, too, was bracing myself for 1500 max, but 500 pesos on top of that is freaking absurd. I'm gonna have to get in touch with relatives in the States once the Switch releases, because I don't even wanna imagine what they're gonna want to charge for it here.

Called it once when I was a kid, playing the first Zelda game on original GameBoy. Part I was stuck at was getting the magic powder from the crane game I think, didn't realize/know that was what I needed to do next.

This was a great rifftrax movie. They have it as a stream/download too so you don't have to do the syncing stuff. There's a preview on their page.
