Damnit. Almost got my first double double with points and assists (10 points and 9 assists) and the coach didn't let me play in the whole fourth quarter. :(

it's so weird that they start you off rated at 55 while everyone talks about how great you are. Last year as an Undrafted rookie you started off at like 75 right?

So other than sucking, what am I doing wrong?

I'm new to modern basketball games. The lure of Spike Lee and those 2K trailers was enough for me to finally decide to dive in and learn to play one. Also, gives me an excuse to follow the sport again.

So i start on My Career Mode.

Found four video tutorials in the options menu under 2K University. Shooting, Dribbling. Passing. My Team. Each was mildly helpful, but seemed totally ineffective when I was actually playing. The game doesn't give you the instruction/example/you try to execute. It's just video.

There's NOTHING for defense. No idea what I'm doing. At all.

Also, when i get the ball, my teammates just want to pass to Freak...no matter how dangerous the situation is. Can I even control another player??

And the loading. Wow. What's with all this loading? There's loading for everything. The last time I played a basketball game (2k10??), I don't remember having to let the game know when to break a cutscene to come back to player control. Finish a quarter? Watch the camera slooooooooooooowly creep into the audience until YOU hit the button to say, "Hey! let's play!" Or, just let it go and it'll keep creeping in until finally the game starts back up.

Free throw shooting time? The game certainly doesn't let you know when you can free throw. It's such a weird thing.

Anyway, odd first impression. Bought it so I'm stuck with it, but I was ready to really dig in and learn how to play.

The directing/writing during the cut scenes is cool. Dialogue definitely feels Spike-Lee like, which i appreciate. However, Spike's new to the whole videogame world, and some of the camera work is VERY awkward and forced because of it.

Newbie opinion developing.

2k is not a newbie friendly game.

Stick with it.

Anyone going to start an online GAF League on PS4? I could set one up if nobody else is interested. Heck, doesn't have to be like 30 different people, we could even get a small league of 15 or so.

If nobody has volunteered to do it, I could set something up. I just wanna bring my Pacers lol.

PC user here. Has anybody experienced awful stuttering on the audio? My PC crashes every time it tries to auto save in Mycareer. It runs smoothly up until the auto save. I tried turning all the settings to low and still the same problem

Hey man, I mean most of the people want either your money or are your family so... of course they'd hype you up. Recruiters gonna recruit you (and say whatever it takes), and the agents as well.

Makes no sense for a lottery pick to be in the 50s though. Every other lottery pick is in the 70s. -_-

I'm pretty sure you start off as literally the lowest rated player in the NBA. I can't check right now, but the bronze dudes in MyTeam are rated like 10 higher than you.

am I the only person to have their PC crash on the auto saves? I have the recommended hardware to be able to run it on the highest settings. What gives? Can't find an answer anywhere. Audio is horrible as it stutters no matter what mode I'm playing in. I've tried everything and it crashes when the game decides to auto save...ALWAYS! fuckin bullshit!!!

Some impressions from me:

-MyCareer is straight up cringe-worthy this year, even more so than the last two years. Why is it called "MyCareer" when you're actually playing as someone else, who just happens to be called "Frequency Vibrations." FREQUENCY VIBRATIONS. Let that sink in. Not only that, but the dialogue seems like it was written by a 12 year-old, and I'm not exaggerating. Almost all of the actors look weird (Freq's mom, his girlfriend), some of the cutscenes go on WAY too long to the point where it's awkward, and the main character that you play as has the same exact personality as the cheesy player you've been playing as for the past few years. They label this as a "Spike Lee Joint" but I'm positive he just came up with the basic plot and left all the writing and dialogue to 2K. I see no jump in quality story-wise from the last few games.

-The soundtrack is definitely the best in recent years, but just like the last few games, you can barely hear it. When the game starts up, the 2KTV preview will automatically play and interrupt the music. The loading screens for MyCareer and other modes just have generic 2K music. What's the point of having a 50-track soundtrack when you can barely listen to any of the songs?

-As for gameplay, blocks are just way too easy and come up way too often. I actually liked it at first because I thought it was too hard to block in previous games, but here it's like you always have a 70%ish chance to black someone as long as you're close. Especially when you're chasing someone down on the fast break, as long as you're close to them, you WILL block that dunk 9/10 times, from what I've played. It's comical.

-This isn't really a negative, but I'm not really liking the changed controls. I probably just haven't gotten used to them, but I always seem to pass to the wrong person whenever I press the high pass or bounce pass button, and it ends up in a turnover. The previous way to do bounce passes felt so much smoother imo. Another thing that I absolutely hate is how you do substitutions - with the right stick instead of the traditional way with the d-pad. What were they thinking?! It seems like one of those random changes they make just to be different from last year. It takes way too long for the names to show up and makes on-the-fly substitution pretty much impossible.

-I've only played two online games but they were both laggy as hell. And I'm still missing freethrows with players who have an 80+ free throw rating by just barely missing the center of the shot meter, while I cash them in with low-rated centers. Just like in 2K15. This is a killer during close games and it's annoying. I've seen it happen to my opponents too (Dude missed both free throws with Steph Curry and made both with one of the power forwards.)

-Presentation-wise, the game is phenomenal. This is why 2K is still around. Seeing the little things like Steph and Kevin Durant take their mouth pieces off during timeouts, specific celebrations, all the different animations that look just like how they appear on TV, and the pre and post game stuff as well.

-I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but one of the most ridiculous things in this game is the "BUY WINS" option for the Play Online ranked mode. You can literally spend VC (aka real money if you want it fast) to rank up quickly. It's disgusting and I can't believe there isn't a separate thread on it here. VC continues to plague this series.

All in all though, I think it's better than the last two current-gen games. There's just still too many things they haven't fixed yet and things they changed for the worse.

Is Yvette's last name really ming ching

As shitty as the story is, it might actually be.

I can't imagine that amount of money that 2k must have paid spike lee for him to put his name on this fucking turd of a story.

Not only is it not YOUR story like they keep hyping, it's barely a story about Frequency Vibrations as all the main story beats revolve around Vic and how much everyone around you wants you to can him.

The story was such ass that the actual aspects of playing basketball in HS, college and your rookie year felt like they had absolutely nothing to do with the story whatsoever. You could take out the basketball element of the story and it's still be the same shitty ass story.

What they should have did was made a story mode around these professional connections and endorsements that you have to schedule and juggle once the second season rolls around.

I've never suggest skipping cutscenes on a first playthrough but to anyone reading this who is about to fire up MyCareer, skip every single cutscene that you can. There are too many of them and some of them are far too long (easily over 10 mins) It just ruins the pacing of you wanting to actually play the game of basketball. You can watch all the cutscenes later in the game anyway

Playing on the Flyers on X1 and I am seeing a ton of 88 rated players. VC is a great money maker.

2k should totally steal from Madden( yeah I know) and go the rpg lite route that they do it mt career and franchise. Spike Lee really got paid for this turd.

Gotta admit I actually asked out of my last few games of my rookie season just to get the story done.

Now my PF is teamed up with Cousins at the Kings to make an intimidating front court combo this is where my NBA career starts.

Scores 35 points, 5 assists, 8 rebounds and 6 steals in the little time he has on the court. Draft stock falls and analysts say I struggled in the first college....what the fuck

Edit: first nba game against rockets and they throw you at Patrick Beverly. Apparently they think your dude can hold up against a point guard who's fucking quick off the dribble.

The game uses the actual schedule for this upcoming season.

Well guys, I tried the 3rd time in my career and I was able to get drafted 1st overall!

Basically...score 30 or more points in all 4 college games and win them. I wonder what it would have taken to get drafted 2nd? Score 25 points one game or something? :p

Is there any tutorial mode? I remember playing 2k13 or 2k12 and was overwhelmed by the control scheme. I'm also aware of the basic rules of the game but I'm not that much into the different tactics. Does the game help new players?

Nope, tutorial vids though.

Man, this suffocating defense from ever damn player is annoying. Might not be keeping this game long, this fall has turned to shit for gaming for me:/

Finally after using the 30,000 VC wisely, my character is manageable now and makes at least 600 VC per game. Could have gotten a better payout if I signed with the 76ers which I was going to but I wanted to win a championship so I picked Okc with less money and less minutes. It all worked out because now I'm playing more minutes.

My "Freq" is a pretty boy though lol. He looks nothing like the original default face you are Given lol!

Also has anyone had any issues with the nickname? I changed his name to silk and they are still calling him freq.. This upsets me a lot tbh.

The worst part about myPlayer is how awful your player dribbles. My PF throws it off every freaking persons foot at least once a game.

So it seems like to get attribute upgrades you spend an off season day doing the drill.

My first two drills got me a point. But after it seems as if doing a drill will fill 1/5 of the bar. I guess I am OK with it and hope it doesn't change. I'm not sure if you even have to do the drill, just go in and finish practice, been experimenting a bit with that.

Oh no, I didn't buy it. The Jordan edition came with it. However I'm a 6'5 balanced SG and I try to stick with assist if I can't shoot and staying extremely in the midrange to shoot.

I would say try staying within that if you are a SG. If not, it seems easier to make VC by being a C

Yeah I wish you for minute stat increases for performance. Like if you routinely get a lot of assists your pass rating should take minor increases besides the vc stuff. It'd be cooler for your player to natively grow based on how you play versus this pick whatever you want to be good at thing but oh well that's how they make their money i guess

I should have made a balanced SG. Went with the outside playstyle, but my shot is shit and I can hardly get any buckets with jump shots. It's way easier to just go for pick and rolls and make the assist or lay-up for guaranteed points. :\ Hope shooting gets better later in the game.

Does that outside/inside/balanced actually affect your ratings?

Now that I think of it, I bet it maximizes your attribute cap. Shiiiiit no wonder the highest my 3 pt shot can go is 80!!

It's hard to imagine Spike Lee wrote any of this cliched trash or if he did he put it together in 15 minutes. It's cringy to the extreme.

Why didn't they make story mode and career mode separate.

Even Fight Night Champion had the sense enough to do that.
