Today I picked up an MVS 4-slot with a few games for $200.

To be honest, I really only played on a Neo Geo a few times at the local Papa Geno's when I was a kid growing up. So I don't know what the best games to pick up are.

I like pretty much every genre. Fighters, puzzle games, shooters, etc. I took a look at Capcom vs SNK and that looks great!

What are some of the best games (that aren't $1000) that I should pick up for the MVS? Would love to turn this into a, "Best of the Neo Geo MVS" thread.

So GAF, what should I pick up? Thanks!

Obvious answers: Garou, Last Blade, Samshos (I'd recommend II, IV, and V), Metal Slug 1, X, and 3.

Slightly less obvious: Baseball Stars 2 - fuck yeah

Less obvious: Windjammers, which kicks all kinds of ass.

Otherwise KOF 98, 2000, 2002. You could try 95, 96, and 97 if you are interested in some plot.

I want to vouch for Windjammers and Last Blade 2 too, as well.

Bust A Move Again/Puzzle Bobble 2

Personally I have a soft spot for Shock Troopers, since I played a ton of it back it in the day - it's basically a mix of Metal Slug and Ikari Warriors. Not sure if it's generally considered a good game because I never see anyone talk about it, but I absolutely love it. Avoid Shock Troopers 2nd Squad, though - some neat ideas but ugly graphics and awful slowdown.

Garou : Mark Of The Wolves (game of the forever)

Metal Slug 3 (best Contra-type game ever)

Magical Drop 3 (best puzzle game ever, tie with Puyo Pop Fever)

Last Blade 2 (for the moments you don't want to play Garou, another amazing fighting game)

Windjammers
is one of my favorite arcade games. We have a bar/arcade here that has certain times at nights you play per hour, I can't tell you how many times I've played this game with others.

Fighting:
Last Blade 2
Kabuki Klash
was another great one. While it might not be as great as Last Blade 2, it's anime movies and art style make me smile. It's pretty good.

Platform:
Blues Journey
can be fun but cheaper to just get on the wii. It plays like a mario brothers 2 platformer. It's not the best, but it's fun.

Games like Blues Journey and Metal Gear can be gotten anywhere. So I'd go for Last Blade 2, Kabuki Klash and others first. That's just my two cents.

Best mixed 4-slot is hard. My gut says Samurai Shodown II, Metal Slug 3, Puzzle Bobble, Super Baseball 2020.

At the risk of sounding like a terrible person, I feel like you really ought to spend a lot of time with Japanese Playstation 2 compilations instead. Most of A.D.K.'s and S.N.K.'s classics shows up there, even if there are slight emulation issues.

Every 4 out of 5 games is good on there. Even the sports games are worth playing. In the end, I have to support The Last Blade/Bakumatsu Romance, Metal Slug, and Twinkle Star Sprites as the 3 series of choice.

I don't know if the Japanese versions differ from the American releases, but man, but some of the games in the PS2 SNK collection were completely broken. Shock Troopers was a mess due to loading issues, for example.

Magical Drop 3 : simple, funny as hell! 2 minutes to explain, a lifetime playing it!

Real Bout 2 : great visuals, great gameplay, best fatal fury ever.

Mark of the Wolves : alternative to real bout, more classic, more immediate. Not a true fatal fury for me, but worth playing it!!

Metal Slug 3 : well...... Metal Slug, baby!
