8th Update:
Wooohooo. I didn't buy anything, but beat two games: TWD: 400 Days and The Stanley Parable.
The Stanley Parable is hilarious and very entertaining, but you should wait until it's on sale again. TWD: 400 Days was ... well ... not as good as the first season. Let's hope the second season is better ...
I heard bad things about it :(

But there is the smell of defeat in the air:
Well, today I bought a PS4. There was a nice offer on the console, an extra controller, the cam and TLoU: Remastered. I already beat TLoU on PS3 and will sell the title. Gotta cancel my Destiny bundle pre-order now. So the next -1 will be Destiny (or South Park: The Stick of Truth from C to the anada) and I'll probably gonna order Trials now. AAARGH!

Summer has been nuts for me and I barely did anything gaming related until August. Despite getting busier than ever I actually got some gaming done as it became a "I need to take a break or I'm going to die of overload." DOTA 2 also ate up some time around the international.

Other than the freebie PSN+/Game with Gold games (null count unless finished) here's the last 4 months:

Games bought: (3) Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect, The Stanley Parable, Shovel Knight. I also bought Mortal Kombat on steam, but I have no intent to do any more than "try it out" so its a null.
Games completed: (5)
  1. Tex Murphy: Telsa Effect - Great throwback. Had a few weak spots (last days), but otherwise loved it.
  2. GTA V - Masterpiece level. I had some reservations about Trevor, but the world is so realized, I liked how the story unfolded and loved the gameplay.
  3. Nidhogg - Not much to the "single player" of this, but sure had great multiplayer matches in the office. Will likely continue to do so.
  4. Dirt 3 - Favorite rally game since Rallisport 2. Didn't like Gymkhana, but otherwise loved it. Too bad I got in so late that the multiplayer has completely dried up.
  5. Halo 4 - Great debut from 343. Like so many games wish I had more time to dig into the multiplayer.
Games cut from the backlog: 0
Summer Score: +2

For the year so far:
  • Games bought in 2014: 8
  • Games completed in 2014: 8
  • Games cut from the backlog: 0
  • Score: 0

Now playing: Shovel Knight, Alan Wake, Deus Ex HR (still), Broken Age (waiting to finish with spouse)

There is a bunch of travel in my future, hopefully I'll kick out some 3DS, DS or iOS games from my queue during the down time.

End of August update.

August Update:

Backloggery

HUGE month! Definitely my most productive month since I've started backlogging, and made up for my lack of progress earlier in the year. Some big milestones: No more retail PS3 games in my backlog, and my total backlog is down under 30 games. I'm very close to the point where I can start focusing most of my attention on new games again, whereas my backlog is not the top priority, but will be there for when I need something else to play. Most, but not all, of the games left in my backlog are not ones I'm in a super-hurry to get to.

So, yeah...that feeling of real progress!

  • The Walking Dead: Season 2, Episode 5: No Going Back

Games that don't count (rented or PS+ games finished or purchased games previously beaten):

The Room and The Room 2(iOS) - I don't count iOS purchases towards backlogs (because for one I rarely finish them) or otherwise point them out here but I felt these were noteworthy. Fantastic puzzle experiences with great atmosphere. I want a dozen more just like them.
Battlefield 4 (PS4) - Picked this up on a PS Store sale. Finished the campaign already, which I thought was fine and is likely what I'll go back to more than the multiplayer.
The Last of Us Remastered (PS4) - This was my first time to play it. Rented on Gamefly with the intent to purchase, but I haven't committed yet. It is a terrific game but I'm still kinda thinking that one time through was enough. I'm sure I'll grab it once it gets a sale on the PS Store though.
Diablo III: Ultimate Edition (PS4) - Beat this on PC already. It's funny, I wanted to write off this version until a few days before its release, when it occurred to me how much fun the combat might be with a controller. Turns out I was right.

Bought in August 2014 (-1):

Transistor (PS4)

Finished in August 2014 (0??):

Currently Playing:

Diablo III: Ultimate Edition (PS4) - Nearly done with Act V with a 59 Monk. Looking forward to trying Adventure mode but I'll have to drop it as soon as Destiny comes out. Boy I sure hope I don't lose interest in that one quickly, it's possible I've unintentionally scratched the itch it was meant for pretty thoroughly with Diablo however.
Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita) - Suddenly remembered this is the greatest game in history and I need to get it out of my backlog. Heading through the Secret Laboratory which I never made it to on the PS2 version.
The Walking Dead: Season Two (Steam) - Finally sat the wife down for a couple of hours so we could go through episode 3. Hopefully we make time for 4 soon so I can finally watch the finale trailer.

- 09/07:
• Bioshock 2 ~ Minerva's Den (PC) (DLC) beaten: It's ok (propably better than most dlc's i've played, but not as good as people say imho). I liked Bioshock 2 A LOT, so it was nice to go back to rapture once more.
• Deadlight (PC) beaten: It was nice, short, but nice. The controls are a bit rough, and i would delete some sections that doesn't mix with the rest of the game
(like the rat labyrinth)
, but the atmosphere is fantastic (the environments specially), and it has a decent soundtrack. It was funny to think about
canabalt
in one stage, and then find that one track from the soundtrack has that exact same name.

Quick update - I may have a second update in the next few days, but I wanted to write this review while the game is fresh in my mind (and to write something positive before the release of pure bile which is on the way next)

I finished The Banner Saga recently. The game took me 11 hours to complete according to Steam.

The Banner Saga is all about sharing and conflict. First in an obvious thematic sense of a conflict shared between tenuous allies. More importantly it is a theme which permeates the game mechanically from its roots in all three facets of gameplay contained within. The game combines Tactical turn-based combat with RPG elements (a popular and well-understood marriage in the gaming space) and a traveling system which presents the player with text-based issues his caravan is facing in the vein of Oregon Trail. For those of you too young to know what that is, it is a mechanic also used to great effect in the more recent FTL.

Each of these systems is governed by a single shared resource, called Renown. You can earn renown by performing well in battles and making certain decisions in the traveling segments. You spend renown in both the RPG system, where it is spent to level up your characters, and within the traveling system where it is used to buy supplies and equippable items. If your caravan runs out of supplies, people start dying. If your characters aren't leveled up enough or lack good items to equip, fights become more difficult, making it harder to earn renown. The inter-dependency of these three systems through renown put the player in a place where it is often impossible to satisfy all of your desires, especially on the first playthrough.

Before delving more into how the systems depend on one another, I'd like to say a little about each of the systems on their own. To start with, you'll be spending most of your time in the Banner Saga engaged in turn-based combat. You will field a team of up to 6 heroes on a grid-based battlefield fighting against either other people, the Varl (a giant-like race) or the Dredge, which represent the faceless swarm of bad guys driving the narrative's central conflict. As the game progresses, you will gain far more than six heroes on your roster, so picking your crew for each battle is critical.

The core conceit of the combat system Is that Health and Damage are a single stat. If your character has 12 hit points, he/she will do 12 damage when they attack. A wounded character therefore does less damage. This shared nature of HP and damage color many of the decisions you make during combat. A wounded enemy becomes far less dangerous than a healthy one, so sometimes the old tried-and-true tactic of concentrating on a single enemy until it is eliminated is not the best option. Each combatant's health is protected by a layer of armor, which blocks an amount of damage equal to its value. So in the above example, a character with 12 HP attacking an enemy with 10 armor will only do 2 damage. You can, alternately attack an opponent's armor, but damage against armor is governed by its own discrete stat rather than using the HP value. Setting up your squad in such a way that you have characters who are good at removing armor along with characters who are good at hurting HP pools goes a long way toward success.

Killing enemies earns your characters the right to be promoted, a.k.a. level up. In order to do so, however, you need to spend renown in camp outside of battle. There is a level cap of 5, so there is also an incentive to not land killing blows with your level 5 characters, since those killshots could be used to help a lower-level teammate gain levels. Killing an enemy also earns your team 1 renown. You will also gain renown at the end of a battle, whether you win or lose. In the case of losses, or heroes falling in battle, there is no perma-death in the game as a result of the combat system. If a character goes down in a battle, he/she is injured. Injury decreases their HP pool for a limited number of in-game days, which plays into the game's travel system.

The traveling in this game is done in a very simplified manner. Your caravan marches from place to place as dictated by the story - you have no control over the destinations, only the details of reaching them. There are 4 resources (in addition to the global renown resource) which govern everything while traveling:

Clansmen - The number of non-combatants within your caravan. Just regular-ass people
Fighters - Warriors who protect the caravan but are not a part of your tactical combat team
Varl - See fighters, except these are giants.
Supplies - This stat is listed in two forms, a raw number, and the (more important) number of days that your supplies will keep your caravan alive.

At the end of the day, the only one of these stats that really seems to make a significant difference is supplies. When you get into military conflicts, the number of fighters and Varl do make the encounters easier or harder, but not by a large enough amount that it ever seemed to make much difference, at least on Normal difficulty. The basic idea is to keep your clansmen and army alive as you travel from place to place, chased by the Dredge. Supplies are needed to do so, so keeping your caravan supplied by spending your hard-earned renown is the core push-and-pull mechanic.

This push-and-pull is influenced by sporadic interjections while traveling. Sometimes these are battles where you can choose to take on a harder tactical combat encounter to save more of your clansmen and fighters. More often, these are in the form of meeting NPCs and being presented with decisions to make regarding any number of things. These decisions range from taking in or turning away a group of weary travelers, taking sides in conflicts among your own people, choosing to take more or less dangerous routes in order to save time or supplies, and the like. As the game goes on, due to various conflicts going on and the push-and-pull of the core systems interplay, some of these decisions become savagely difficult. There is no simple, binary good/evil or paragon/renegade options. Being generous can cost you if you take on refugees who steal your supplies. Being callous can cost you favor among your people, as can being too cavalier or generous, depending on the result.

And the place where these decisions really become difficult is the fact that while perma-death isn't a worry in combat, you can permanently lose your heroes in these conflicts. Sometimes the loss comes immediately, and sometimes it happens many hours after the initial critical decision was made. While it is possible to reload a save in the event of a tragic error, I found that the most enjoyable way to play was to own your decisions and live with them. The game seems to encourage this, as it will never prompt you to load a save (nor does it give you the opportunity to create a hard save, opting instead for a checkpoint system handled entirely in the background), with the exception of dying during the final boss fight. Losing a battle simply leaves your team injured, and you can generally tag in some other heroes to compensate, or simply rest off the injuries if you have supplies to spare.

The beauty of the Banner Saga is that every decision you make has a direct impact on the other facets of the game. Spending a lot of resources leveling up a hero who is effective in combat can cost you a chance to buy supplies later, and can become even more problematic if you get them killed down the line, leaving you with a hole in your lineup and a bunch of wasted resources to boot. I lost more than one high-level hero over the course of my adventure, and was scratching the felt on supplies, which led to significant losses of clansmen and fighters.

The game is not without its problems, however. For one, variety in the combat encounters is pretty minimal. Whether you're fighting humans, Varl or Dredge, it pretty much comes down to a game of managing the armor and health bars above everyone's heads and using space on the battlefield to keep as many enemies out of the combat as possible. Each her on your team has their own special ability, but to be honest, I found most of them less useful than a regular attack the vast majority of the time. There were a couple, such as Oddleif's ability to take a single space on the battlefield and turn it into a crowd-control point, which were extraordinarily useful, but I found most of them to be very specifically situational, or requiring enemies to behave in a certain way to play into the effect of the ability, which leads to very inconsistent results, and often a complete waste of the ability.

In addition, I had a few issues with the game's narrative. First is a disconnect with the Story mode "battles." These are presented to the player as such. "You have 180 fighters and 450 Varl. It looks like there are about 600 enemies. [and some flavor text about how threatening or not threatening they look] What do you do?" You have a list of options, which all really boil down to "harder fight for tactical team = lose fewer soldiers or easier fight and lose more soldiers." While this is fine on a mechanical level, including battles between hundreds of warriors in a game's narrative which you have some level of control over makes the little 6-on-8 or whatever skirmishes you engage in seem pitiful and meaningless.

The other issue with the narrative is the conclusion. To call it underwhelming would be an understatement. In a sense, it echoes the problems with the battles above. There is one big bad NPC monster who chases your caravan through the last third of the game, and the final battle is against him. This is fine, except for the fact that within the narrative, you're told that this big bad is simply one of a large group of his kind (which are called the Sundr) which are marching away from your troupe elsewhere.

I didn't play the expansion, and I imagine some of the greater conflict is addressed there, but to end the main game on such an anticlimax was pretty disappointing.

Thankfully, the mechanical interplay between the various game systems, and the ways in which those mechanics echo the struggles going on in the narrative make this a game well worth playing despite a few hiccups.

Overall score - 4/5

I completed Yakuza 3 with on normal, also completed most of the side quests.
I really like the option to travel between Okinawa and Kamurocho, It makes 100% completion easier.

I also really wish you don't get locked out of a side quest, if you just happen to miss them.
That's one of the things that annoy me so much in the Yakuza games.

Also the Drag Queen chase was really weird and hilarious.

9th Update:
What a month! The PS4 didn't do that much damage to my backlog. I got to beat 7 games and only bought 4 (won't count two double dips on the recent PSN EU sale).

Games that don't count (rented or PS+ games finished or purchased games previously beaten):

DanganRonpa 2: Goodbye Despair (PS Vita) - I only rented the previous game and this one because I figured there wouldn't be a reason to play through them more than once, once you see the results of each trial. If there's one thing that might break me on that, it's the infectious music in this series. Monokuma's theme won't leave my head.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - Loved this on Steam but my PC can't run it as well as the PS4, so I bought this when I noticed it was on sale. Kinda regretting it a bit. It may be prettier now but I don't actually think I'll spend much time on it.
Minecraft (PS4) - Bought on release day but it's for my son really. I spent some time with survival but might not come back. I love the idea of the game and how much my son is into it but it's not for me.

Bought in September 2014 (-1):

Destiny (PS4)

Finished in September 2014 (1):

Destiny (PS4)

Currently Playing:

Persona 4 Golden (PS Vita) - Think I might finally finish it this month, which will knock off this item and Persona 4 in the PS2 section of my backlog. Currently finishing up the hidden dungeon in February and after that will go for the true ending which includes yet another dungeon.
Transistor (PS4) - Only spent a few hours with it after buying it late last month. I like how customizable the abilities are.
Destiny (PS4) - Spent a lot of time here in September and have no signs of slowing down. Currently level 24. No legendaries yet so I'm pretty excited about this week's patch. Even though I should get Shadow of Mordor today I'll probably still make time for at least one strike per night.

September update

Hah! I managed to actually stay in the positive this month despite birthday gifts, kickstarted games coming out, and being weak on a Bundle on a sale. Of course, most of the games I completed were very short so that helps a lot... also I might have spent too much time playing games rather than doing more "constructive" things. <_<

Games acquired in September (-12)

1. Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright (Birthday gift)
2. The Wonderful 101 (Birthday gift)
3. Mighty Gunvolt (Free for Mighty No. 9 backers)
4. Zelda: Oracle of Ages (eShop "smashing" sale)
5. Zelda: Minish Cap (eShop "smashing" sale)
6. Hammerwatch (Humble Bundle)
7. Papers Please (Humble Bundle)
8. The Bridge (Humble Bundle)
9. Gunpoint (Humble Bundle)
10. Gone Home (Humble Bundle)
11. Wasteland 2 (Kickstarted)
12. Defense Grid 2 (Kickstarted)
13. Race the Sun*
14. Luftrausers*
15. Prison Architect*

*A few games were part of the Humble Bundle but I'm not counting them yet because... well, I don't know if they interest me. If I try them and decide to keep playing later on, I'll count them on the backlog.

Finished Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. Time to complete – 54 hours on the game clock. This time is a bit excessive, and I'll explain why later in the review.

So, I hate this game. Why did I waste 54 hours playing a game I hate, you ask? Well, one, because I hated it so much that I wanted to write this review. But secondarily, and more importantly, this was the only game on my 3DS that I hadn't completed for long stretches of time, so it became my default bathroom-time game. Normally, if I'm playing a 3DS game that I like, the system gets elevated out of bathroom duty for the duration of the game, since the game is good enough that I want to keep playing. This game, however, never graduated from the toilet - literally or metaphorically. These brief, sporadic sessions are largely why my playthrough clocked in at such a length. I had to constantly re-orient myself each time I resumed playing.

What's so bad about it? For starters, let me state that I have played and enjoyed several of Mario's RPG adventures in the past, both of the “Paper” and “Mario & Luigi” variety. I generally found them to be generally charming and inoffensive, occasionally funny, and reasonably entertaining games. So I'm not someone who came into this game expecting to hate it. On the contrary, I thought it would be a decent little time waster.

With that out of the way, let's discuss why this game is bad. The game has four major areas of bad execution. First is the story and characters. I'm not going to go into great detail on this since it's such a subjective thing, but suffice to say that I found almost all of the characters in the game to be relentlessly insufferable, spared only by occasional appearances of the charming Big Massif.

The second area of concern is the over-tutorializing of incredibly simple things multiple times. When the game started out, and it was hand-holdy for the first hour or two, I was annoyed by the overly-verbose details of every little thing, but I understood it. Some people need a little shove in the right direction at the start of a game, so fine, shove away. The problem isn't the first couple hours. The problem is that thirty hours into the game I was still getting these overly long, repeatedly interrupting tutorial moments. Just as a single example, as the game starts, you have a basic jump, which is used both in the overworld to, uh, jump, and in battles as a jump attack. You'll get tutorialized to death on the intricasies of the jump attack, jump evade, and so on. You'll enter the dream world and see a big purple crystal in the air. Rather than letting you jump into the crystal with your only means of interacting with stuff in the world, your little helper buddy will leap out and say something along the lines of, “Hey! That giant glowing purple thing right in front of you looks interesting! It's right over your head, so maybe something will happen if you jump into it!”

OK, I say, we're still in the tutorial, and maybe some moron out there won't figure out that the way to hit something over your head is to jump into it. Fine. The next ability you get is your old, trusty hammer. Mario has been hammering stuff since Donkey Kong. Got it. You'll be given lengthy explanations on how to use the hammer outside of combat (you hit things that are directly in front of you) and in combat (you'll hit things directly in front of you). After this, you're given an area in which you hammer rocks out of your way to clear a path and enter the side-scrolling dream world again, where at the end of the level you're presented with another large glowing purple crystal. Only this time, the crystal isn't right over your head, it's right in front of you. Now, if you have at least seven functional synapses in your head, you're already switching to hammer mode as you walk up to the crystal to smash it. However, right before you get to it, Shitty McHelperson jumps out and yells at you again, telling you that maybe this mysteriosly-placed crystal can't be jumped into, and maybe there's another way to hit it. “Yeah, my fucking hammer,” you think, assuming the game will give you back control. Before it does, another text box comes up telling you that, yes, in fact, you should try hitting it with your hammer.

Seriously? This is literally the most brain-dead “puzzle,” a game could possibly conjure, and yet the game doesn't even offer the player the satisfaction of solving it on their own before interrupting them to tell them the solution.

That leads us into the game's third problem. The overworld puzzles. They are, from the game's start to its finish, the most rote and useless puzzles I've ever encountered in a game. They all work the same way. Over the course of the game, you'll gain a broad range of abilities which you can cycle through with the R button. Each of these abilities is useful for exactly one thing. As the game goes on, you'll be presented with obstacles which are tailor designed to be overcome with that one exact thing. You'll switch Mario and/or Luigi to that ability with R, and then hit the appropriate button, and then the obstacle is passed. That's it. You will do that over and over hundreds of times for no real reason other than to waste your time and make sure you remember that the R button is still working on your 3DS.

When people discuss game systems having depth, the above is the perfect example of the polar opposite of that. There are tons of abilities (breadth), but each is so strictly limited in what it can do, that it is literally only useful for one very exact task it was designed for. This is theoretically fine in a game where you're trying to apply a very limited toolset quickly or intelligently, but this game has neither. You just walk up to the obstacle, select the very-obvious correct tool, and voila, you're past the obstacle.

So the characters suck, the story sucks, and the puzzles suck, but at least the combat is fun, right? Well, not so much. The combat breakdown is as such. You can jump on things. You can hit them with hammers. For basic attacks, that's it. You also have a variety of special attacks, depending on the particular type of battle you're engaged in. First, there are overworld battles, where Mario and Luigi team up for Bros attacks. Second are dream world fights, where Mario fights alone, and is supplemented by Dreamy Luigi's special abilities and attacks, and third are Giant Dreamy Luigi battles, which are.... well, I'll get to those later.

The overworld and dreamworld battles are very similar, so I'll discuss them together. They break down as so: If the monsters have spikes on top of them, hit with them with the hammer. If they don't, jump on them. The special attacks are basically useless in any non-boss situation, since they take such a long time to complete, and they deplete a resource. Just jumping and hammering is all you need for every regular enemy in the game. You will get very, very tired of jumping and hammering before this game is done. The special attacks are generally pretty uninteresting anyway, and basically consist of a crappy minigame you have to play before the attack happens, with the success of the minigame determining the damage of the attack. On boss encounters, you'll find which one of these works well, and then you'll repeat it until the boss is dead. You'll get really tired of these things too.

The most interesting part of the combat is the various enemy attacks. Each enemy has a couple of attack patterns it will use (or a bunch for bosses), which will require you to properly time a jump or a hammer swing to dodge or deflect the attack. Enemies are intentionally designed to be confusing, so you'll have to take a few hits until you get each type down. This is all fine, but it could have been a lot better with a single, tiny adjustment. Each enemy attack automatically puts you into jump mode or hammer mode, so you're limited in what you can do to avoid them. Mario jumps with B, Luigi jumps with A. Mario hammers with B, Luigi hammers with A. The game decides which you'll use on every single enemy attack. This game doesn't use the X or Y buttons for anything throughout the entire game. If they had simply put the jumps on A and B, and the Hammers on X and Y, it would have made the combat much more interesting. There could be more variety in how you go about avoiding damage, or you could make a tradeoff where you take a hit intentionally to deal damage with the hammer, and so on. But that's a common theme in this game. The game tells you exactly how you need to play it at all times and any deviation or thought from the player is unacceptable.

And now we arrive at the Giant Dreamy Luigi Battles. Oh, did I ever save the worst for last. These things are awful. If a designer made a game that was nothing but this crap, they'd be fired on the spot. Everything about these battles is terrible. Every action is done with stylus swipes, stylus taps, or tilting the 3DS. No matter which one the game chooses, they all suck. Swipes are used for replicating the hammer and jump attacks, except now they're finnicky and sometimes the game misinterprets your input. The jump attack requires that you hold the stylus in place for a few seconds, and then swipe upwards to perform the jump, but sometimes it would jump immediately as I touched the pad to hold it in place. This results in the weakest possible attack. The regular swipes are less problematic, but there's always giant arrows on the screen instructing you on exactly what you must do in any given situation, and they're still worse than the way you perform the exact same actions in the rest of the game by just hitting a button.

The biggest issue with the Giant battles however, is every time it decides to use the tilt function. In every single battle that used it, I died at least once because the tilt completely stopped working halfway through the tilt minigame, and Luigi or the reticule would just go drifting off into the corner of the screen and get murdered by projectiles or into the lava, or whatever hazard was there. Alternatively, it would get stuck in the “down” position, and I would keep tilting up until the 3DS was facing completely away from me to the point where I could no longer even see the screen without hunching myself over upside down to tell if I was dying or not . (I was. And I was also still in the bottom corner of the screen.)

Compounding the control issues with the giant battles is the fact that every single attack is prefaced with an over-long animation that drags everything out to a ridiculous degree. Also inserted are frequent “helpful” hints from Shitty McHelperson who tells you things which are plainly obvious if you just look at the screen, and dialog boxes popping up from the villain. All of these repeat every time you do the fight if you die because you got stuck in the corner of the screen, so enjoy that.

And there we have it. This is unquestionably the worst game I've ever played to completion in my life. There's still the remnants of a decent design formula in there, but the game so infrequently allows you to explore its mechanics or exercise any level of applied knowledge of concepts that it just becomes a tedious game of connect-the-dots that is dragged out over 40-50 hours by constant interruption.
