Pretty solid top 10 list, GAF. Not sure how Drunken Master II didn't make the top 10, or the overlong, bloated Raid 2 scored so high (or Raiders didn't even make the top 5) but that's a pretty damn respectable top 10!

Fury Road at #3 already. I bet with time, as the praise from the faithful dies down and people come across it on their own, that particular fire rises even further.

No complaints about that top 10. I've seen 18 of the top 20, just missing Road Warrior and Commando.

I don't know if I should watch The Raid and its sequel(s) or not. The opinions are so divided!

Mad Max Fury Road at #3?

Talk about being prisoner of the moment :V
I kinda agree -- it's a great movie, but third best ever? I feel like that ranking will not stand up over time.

Even still that's a pretty strong top 5.

Interesting that Raiders had one less first place vote than T2, but is 5 whole slots beneath it in the top 10.

Wouldn't have thought there'd be such an either/or response to it. Looks like it was "either it's #1, or its not on my list"

I voted Fury Road as my third favorite. I recognise that this preference might change later but it certainly is a great movie. Asking this a year later again might be very interesting. And maybe, have some weighted scores if a movie has been out leas than a year.

Interesting to note that Hard Boiled is the only film in the top 10 that isn't part of a franchise (unless you count the Stranglehold video game).

from my experience people don't tend to think of it as an action movie.

Came into this thread thinking:

1. Die Hard

followed by Aliens, Predator, The Matrix and Raiders of the Lost Ark somewhere in the top ten. Feels goodman.

Except I still haven't seen Mad Max. Feels bad, man.

GAF's The Raid boner is outrageous.

I mean they were good movies and all but wow.

Good list, I don't not enjoy a single movie from the top twenty.
Agreed. Gaf has solid action movie taste. The only thing that made me raise an eyebrow at all was seeing Winter Soldier down in the 40s, I figured that might have placed higher.

Pretty good list and Die Hard is a fine choice that's hard to argue with

Raiders should be in top 5 though.

Going by the odd disparity in top choice to mentions for the film I guess either more people than average compared to the other films dont think of it as an action film (maybe it's seen more as an adventure film) or its down to being less seen for some odd demographic reason.

Still it is in top 10 so it's not that bad.

I love Indy but overall I consider them to be more adventure movies than action, though it is kind of splitting hairs.

surprised lethal weapon barely cracked top 20. feels like it's one of the most loved action movies out there.

Yeah, it's definitely splitting hairs. I think I've talked about it before (because lord fuckin' knows I love a semantics debate) but a lot of people don't really realize that "Action Movie" is really just short for "Action/Adventure" movie. Before the late 80s, there wasn't really a separate conception of "action" and "Adventure" within the genre. Action/Adventure was just what it was called. And then after a glut of Schwarzenegger and Schwarzenegger knockoffs started hitting shelves, people began to segregate the two much more cleanly, when they didn't really need to. And at some point in the late 90s, it was pretty much done: There was now a big wall between "Action" and "Adventure"

If anything, it's the film equivalent of people who try to say "rap" is differen't than "hip-hop."

I wondered if people viewed it that way?

It's funny though because it has two of the best paced and directed extended action sequences ever IMHO in the fight around ( and under and on top of) the plane and the truck chase.

Of course it also has a finale that slyly renders the "hero" impotent, has arguably the best in context "Dues Ex Machina" resolution and with the puzzles and globetrotting feels very adventurous.

That truck chase though.

I'm really surprised that I was the only one that voted for Escape From New York especially considering Big Trouble in Little China managed to get 25 points. Assault on Precinct 13 also only got 2 points. Do people really prefer Big Trouble to Assault and Escape?

Also no votes for The Warriors or any other film by Walter Hill (Southern Comfort, Long Riders, 48 Hrs., The Driver...).

I consider The Last Crusade to be the better Indy film.

Terminator 2 over 3 is a fucking travesty.
I mean we all have our opinions but tyis might be the worst opinion ive seen on GAF. You should be ashamed of yourself. I bet you just want the quotes and attention tho and we are playing right into it.

I still haven't seen Mad Max and I think it's kinda weird that it's top 3. There is no way it will live up to the hype that I have for watching it now. I am surprised John Wick is so low in comparison. Guess I really need to watch Mad Max now since action is my favorite movie genre

Yeah, I saw a few lists where Crusade was the only entry from that series.

I don't think I saw any Temple of Doom's, though. Which is interesting, as that one, from an action standpoint, murders the sequences in Crusade.

So don't hype it, then. Hype is ephemeral. It's not a tangible object. You can ignore it if you wish, set it aside. You don't have to bring the shit in with you.

Agreed with the Top 10 except for Fury Road. I just don't understand the love for that movie. It's a gorgeous looking film, but I found it pretty boring overall. Oh well, different strokes, etc.

Wow that is actually a really great list. Good job ya'll. Although no Jackie in the top 10 is kind of a fuck up.

And yeah, I feel like perception of and appreciation for Fury Road will only get better as time goes on. It's fucking outstanding.

It might not be #3 but I firmly believe it's one of the best action movies ever. Great rewatchability too.

edit: maybe it is #3. Tough to put it above Aliens though.

Bobby, don't my action movie need violence? I wouldnt put the Indiana Jones movie in the same category, but I haven't watched them so iono. It comes off as adventure,(from the clips) the story is the attraction, not the carnage.

Also mad max in top 3? I found john wick to be better minus the central park scene.

Will there be a revote?
