Sorry but I think this is a piece of shit list. The Dark Knight is only on there because the people who voted for it were 14-16 when they saw the movie in theaters.

Put me on the list of people who think TDK is much too high on the list.
It's a good movie, but after watching it twice, I'm ok with never watching it again.

Lame. Some criticisms, like The Dark Knight being way too high, are valid if you don't make a list yourself. But your criticism is worthless without a list. You just listed 9 directors of which there are "too few", and counted 2001 as "absolutely deserving"... but this was all based on top tens. So you just used up your entire top ten, and that's assuming you think each of the directors you listed only has one deserving film (which one that is we are left guessing), and directors like Kurosawa, Kobayashi, Tarkovsky, Leone, Fellini, Lynch, Buñuel, etc, have zero deserving films.
Just make a list. If I were to make a rough top 20 right now, 6 of them would be movies I was inspired by that thread to see. There were individual lists with lots of variety and that's one of the best ways to discover new things. There are many more I have my sights on too.

Agreed. I feel like I've seen this same exact list every time one is compiled. I want to see a list from people who actually know film, and I don't mean from people in Hollywood. Such lists should lead people to want to seek out the absolute best, but the absolute best isn't just Hollywood films.
We few men must carry this burden on our shoulders. Us true patricians of film-watching.

Here's what I've watched from the poll.
Some good movies on the list, but it seems like it's a list of movies from people who are more dedicated to videogames, who would have thought.

There are more classics and world cinema on this list that I ever would of expected on a videogame forum where most posters are in their 30's or younger. People can only vouch for the stuff they have actually seen. One would have to actually make an effort to avoid Nolan, Fincher, Cameron, Spielberg and so on to have not seen a lot of their movies. Whereas stuff like Tarkovsky, Bresson and Rohmer, you generally have to seek out their films as they are not being aired, advertised, or hyped on Cable or Network TV. Even on dedicated movie sites like Rotten Tomatoes or HomeTheaterForum these sort of lists trend towards newer and more popular stuff simply because more people have seen it.

They hate 'em but they still watch 'em. If they find 'em unenjoyably bad, then at least watch enjoyably bad movies like Manos or something instead.

Nope, but in a thread like this it's easy to imagine that most of the votes went to films that are fresh in people's minds. Do I wish that more people would seek out cinema from before 1990? Absolutely. Honestly, I was expecting the results to look much worse. You have to admit, those top two choices are films that could possibly be the two greatest films ever.

I guess to stop all doubt that it's because I haven't seen them or something. I have. they are very good films deserving of their classic status I just don't think at the time in place in my life when I watched them really made me care about them as much as other people here.
Could be partly a generational thing too.

Why does that invalidate that? People who vote for ESP or Raiders were probably in similar positions too or probably younger seeing as how the dialogue skews a bit younger.
I already mentioned I saw Raiders at 15 and ESP at 21. Thought they were great movies, but they aren't in like my top 50 of all time or something even. People need to realize age and factor and generation do play a role.
Don't be surprised if TDK gets even higher on movie lists as time goes on and older generation dies.

I listed those guys as examples of great directors who should be featured more prominently on a list of great films, and who it's disappointing to see more people are not aware. My own top 10 would include some movies by the directors I mentioned, some on yours. (Not Bunuel or Lynch.)
It's not that bad, but there are a few stinkers in there. I agree with 2001 being one of the greatest ever, but Blade Runner wouldn't even make my top 50.
I mean this list isn't at all my taste, but it's what youget with a popular vote list. In an ideal world the average person is a huge Malick and Godard and Cronenberg and Bong and Sturges fan, in the real world it's fine to have to look to TSPDT or Sight and Sound for "quality" curation.
Top ten is the same "internet dude" sort of thing ranking that you expect. But three of those films were on my list, so I guess I'm part of the problem.
That's just the problem with most aggregate lists among regular film watchers though. Standard classics and major demographic films are going to flood this list, since those probably make up a half of most people's personal top ten. Any sort of personality is drained out by the process.
This can't be said enough. I've only casually looked at the rest of this thread, but if any one looking over this list think this is representative of the best that cinema has to offer, I would recommend checking out more professional rankings.

That's a good list.
Can't say I agree with much of the list. Could I come up with a better one? absolutely not, but Pulp Fiction, Dark Knight, and Indiana Jones aren't even top 50 material. Blade Runner you might be able to get away with it in a top 100. Star Wars could probably make it to the top 100.

Looking back at the final list, I was ok with it (other than TDK ranking a bit too high). But I understand that there are many kids here, so what ever.
What I can't forgive is the lack of The Neverending Story votes.

I REALLY needed to see 2001: A Space Odyssey, apparently.

I dunno I don't have much problem with that scene tbh. The tension building alone is pretty good even if the ending is kinda blah.
Maybe you expect too much of GAF or I expect too little, but i thought this list was surprisingly decent. Outside of the Criterion crowd, it did feel that a lot of people might think that Star Wars and Marvel are the only things that matter and Mad Max Fury Road is the best film there can be. I was surpised by the spread of films and for example, by In the Mood for Love being the highest HK movie over the likes of The Killer or Infernal Affairs as one might expect from a gaming crowd. I also thought that GAF hates Ridley Scott, but he has four on the list and two at the top.
Still, when WKW made the list, it was slightly disappointing to not see Taiwanese new wave like Edward Yang and Hou Hsiao-Hsien. I thought some people would have put Yi Yi, A Brighter Summer's Day or City of Sadness among their top asian movies. I guess i miss the voting thread so i can't complain.

Some people probably had voted for films by Edward Yang or Hou Hsiao-Hsien. The voting thread was rather short though and if there were, let's say, three people that had one of the movies you mentioned on their top ten lists, but placed in the bottom third, it still wouldn't have made it due to the ten point minimum.
I had four japanese movies on my list and only one of them made it. And it was on the top spot. There's definitely a lot more variety in the voting thread.
