Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe Movie Gets Rare NC-17 Rating for Sexual Content

Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biopic officially has an NC-17 rating.

Blonde, which stars Ana de Armas (Deep Water) as the iconic actress and pinup model, was given the rare adults-only rating for “some sexual content” by the Motion Picture Association on Wednesday.

Director Andrew Dominik previously predicted the film, which is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, would get an NC-17, defiantly telling Screen Daily in February: “It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office. It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”

The director also said Netflix “insisted” on hiring editor Jennifer Lame (Tenet) “to curb the excesses of the movie,” which includes a rape scene that was also in Oates’ book.

Oates’ acclaimed 2000 novel is a 700-page fictionalized take on Monroe’s life, which The New Yorker once dubbed “the definitive study of American celebrity.”

Netflix has previously streamed NC-17 movies produced by other studios (such as 2013’s Blue is the Warmest Color), but Blonde seemingly marks the first movie produced by Netflix to receive the hard-core rating.

i wish she got more time in that movie.
Absolutely. She's just drop-dead gorgeous in it.

As they're probably just going to do a reset with Bond next, it would still be possible for her to be in future ones. I doubt they will get her again.

Ana De Armis was great in Knives Out. I haven't seen her other work. But even though I wouldn't object to seeing her in more films, I have zero interest in a movie about Marilyn Monroe, regardless of who's playing the lead.

As for the NC-17 rating, it just seems like a way to promote De Armis' role in the movie to me.

Everyone getting excited for the NC-17 rating showcasing Ana de Armas presumably getting raped... (didn't read the book)

Everyone's gonna run to this because of the NC-17, only to be shockingly dissapointed that it's due to excessive smoking. Prove me wrong Netflix. Please. . . . .

Some actresses -- like Scarlett Johansson -- are rebelling against doing nudity in movies, which of course is within their right.

I, for one, am glad that there are other actresses -- like Ana de Armas -- who embrace their beauty and sexuality, and aren't afraid to make it part of their overall acting repertoire.

Pretty sure that’s not the first thought running through people’s mind. Personally I’m down for softcore JFK on MM action though provided he softly whispers Ich Bin Ein Berliner into her ear?

Is she gonna go to town on JFK's peepee?

It's a strange flex, defending the artistic integrity of a movie, based on a fictionalized novel that's kind of based on a real person. I guess people like porn though, and they usually complain about the stories, so this might be a nice compromise.

Didn't she pose for playboy and tell critics that if they didn't like it, don't buy the magazine?

Yea, this feels right.

Been really curious about this. Read the film is a disaster but Dominik track is great. Chopper, Jesse James, Killing them Softly and the Manson episode of Mindhunter. Liked them all.

So I put this on as a lark and it is NC-17 for "some sexual content"....whaaa whaaaaaa? Either there is one hell of a single incident of sexual content or that is waaaay underselling it :p

Or it is just a regular rated R that got the NC-17 for some tiny thing and rather than make a little cut they took it as a badge of honor to sell the film.

Wow.
That was one disturbing movie... especially the JFK scene I know lots of it was a fictionalized account but I can never look at him the same way.. hope it never happened... I guess we'll never know.
