*reads spoilers.....and practically dies*

...Wow. Awesome. Of course, this is assuming this is all real, and not some random fabrication that some one made on that forum (there were several others who did this crap a year ago).

But any way....this is definitely turning out to be one bad-ass game...

Just one question...

Why would Richter be the last Belmont user of the whip? Are they trying to say that between the last time Richter appeared and used the whip (which was in the 1700s) there were NO other Belmonts who used it? Something about that spells plot-hole to me. Ah well...like some one else said...story takes a back-seat to bad-ass demon-whipping any way...!

I assure you that the info is true. :)

I'll even bet you $$$ on it.

And there are a LOT more spoilers than that.. O_O

And the original maker of those vids is from CV Dungeon forums, name is "Portait of Ruin" so thanks to him.

I'm so crossing my fingers on this one. DoS was pretty meh, and I'm really hoping this new game can inject some exciting and creative level layouts back into this franchise. The corridor crawl in DoS was just flat out boring.

I agree and disagree with you. While DoS could've used more interesting layouts, the level design was still tighter than SotN, which had some overly lengthy hallways for one thing.

The only drawback from this game is if you're a seasoned CV player you might plow through this one rather easily. But the map is huge and there is a ton of replay and new modes once you finish the game.

HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!

Its mother ****ing
Richter THE ****ING MAN Belmont!
.

OH SHIT! Speedrunning this is going to be fun as hell!

1UP: Speaking of the partner characters, I recently saw a screenshot that featured both characters battling against Gergoth, the zombie dinosaur from Dawn of Sorrow. Was that indicative of co-op play?

IGA: Yes, that's something you'll be able to do in co-op play.

1UP: Is co-op limited or does it encompass the full game?

IGA: Actually, that particular monster you'll find all over the game. But co-op takes place in restricted stages and areas of the game.

:/ Wtf.

WARNING

the new 1up interview seems to have lots of spoilers in it. I didn't read them, but I read that the game is 50% bigger than DOS :D

1UP: It also feels a lot like the older Castlevanias, at least in the parts that I've played... very straightforward.

IGA: Actually, I would say Portrait of Ruin is a mixture of the linear style and the map-exploration type games.

wow that's cool. I had no idea about that.

I'm not complaining. Gergoth was awesome.

But that was mostly due to his crashing down something like 20 floors of a tower. I hope he does something that interesting again.

Sounds like we might be getting that game starring Julius during the events of 1999 that I've been dreaming of next. Man that'd be awesome.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume...IGA has basically already said that he wants to save that particular game for the right time. I'm hoping that time is soon, but chances are that it will probably will be saved for later, after IGA has gotten a good grasp of all the different hardware available, and what each has to offer.

But seeing a 2D-tastic CV, which happens to be the 1999 game, appear on the Wii? That would definitely sound like a match made in heaven. Especially if it utilized the Wii-DS linking thingie for both this game and DoS too...

1UP: Miss Yamane, you find different inspirations when you compose Castlevania music -- Lament of Innocence was set long ago and doesn't have electric guitars, for instance. What most inspired your work in Portrait?

Yamane: Actually, this time I've asked another composer to contribute to the soundtrack -- the legendary Yuzo Koshiro. He was a big fan of past Castlevania games and has a really good grasp of the series; he's contributed five songs to Portrait of Ruin. His involvement really stimulated my own creativity and inspired me to create many different kinds of music.

1UP: Did the game's more varied environments inspire you at all?

Yamane: Yes, you can access many different sub-dungeons in the game, all of which are very different. The desert area, for instance -- that's very different, something I've never experienced in a Castlevania game before, so I went with a belly dance kind of music.

1UP: The DS hardware obviously doesn't sound as good as PlayStation or PS2. Do the limitations of working on DS cards frustrate you, or do you find them inspiring?

Yamane: Well, this time around I worked on the original soundtrack. Once we had created the soundtrack, our team's specialist converted the music into 16 parts so that it could work within the limitations of the DS hardware.

1UP: Meaning the sound quality is improved this time?

Yamane: Definitely, because he's a specialist!

Okay, so
those extra modes look awesome and assure that this is at least in the top three of the year, because it's almost like three games in one, but I have to ask because apparently I'm not fully up on Castlevania history... who's Maria? I'm guessing a descendant of that mage girl in CVIII?

Yep, a
Fernandez/Belnades

she was playable in Chi no Rondo as a young girl and she was in SotN as a teenager. She was playable in the Saturn version of SotN.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Another Interview:

Iga: Well, you will be able to do that. If you enter a hidden a hidden command at the game start, you should see an option that allows you to hear English or Japanese voices.
He also says there are no plans for the next Castlevania game right now, he's looking at next-generation platforms and hopes to continue with the DS if the market is there.

Well, I'm a bit surprised they aren't already planning out a third DS Castlevania... hopefully Portrait of Ruin will sell well enough to convince them to get right on that. I'd like to see the DS get at least as many CVs as the GBA had, and with no clunkers like Harmony.

Iga: Well, the main design theme is still gothic. We have Dracula, so it needs to be about Dracula. But the development team has worked on many, many Castlevania games, and have mostly worked with indoors maps. Our team was about to get bored with the map creation and stage design. From the gamer's point of view, it's always great within the castle, but gamers might feel the same. So we decided to try outdoor stages, and that's how we came up with the Misty Town and other outdoor areas. In Portrait of Ruin, there are all of these paintings that allow the player to access a variety of outside areas.

It's like he's been reading GAF. :)

OMG. Too good to be true. How could this game possibly be any better?

Our team has been working so hard on this game, over the past month especially, having no weekends or holidays, working 24/7 on it. I want my team members to take a month off when this is done, they deserve it for all this hard work.

holy crap

Okay, this is bar none the best news I could have heard about this game. So bloody awesome.

What would be even more awesome is if the next Castlevania was designed from the ground up to accommodate coop.

Bet you the hidden command is the Konami Code.

I really hope there's a third DS entry, maybe more... and please, please, PLEASE for the love of Mary have Ayami Kojima work on it. The fact that they didn't have Kojima work on the previous 2 entries because they thought the art effected SALES is rediculous. Stupidest theory ever. Hey I know, why don't you actually MARKET THE GAME (TV commercials?) and it'll sell more.

Also, SotN port plz. :D

Does this mean Streets of Rage Koshiro or Legend of Oasis Koshiro?
Yamane + Streets of Rage Koshiro could be the best mix ever to make a soundtrack really!

It's... the same Koshiro...

:lol i know.

It was my way to doubt Koshiro. He made one of the most incredible soundtrack to ever grace a video game (SOR2) and on the other side, with Oasis he made like the worse soundtrack ever ****ing composed (if you can call that composition).

SO, if it's "good Koshiro stuff" it's gonna benifit Castlevania ALOT. If it's "bad Koshiro" it will only refrain the soundtrack to be amazing for the beginning to the end (something Yamane is already capable of).

While I'm not sure why you had to spoiler tag that, I'll respect your decision.

Given the fact that, as far as I could recall,
Trevor and Sypha get married
, it would seem that
Maria is a descendent of the Belmonts as well
.

Am I right?

It was probably spoiler tagged because
not everyone wants to know that she's an unlockable character in the game.

If I recall correctly,
the Belnades' are a clan, and Maria isn't directly related to Sypha. I mean, if Sypha and Trevor had a child, it would've been a Belmont, not a Belnades. I could be wrong, though.

I haven't been keeping up with this game so I'm curious:

Whats up with stats being displayed on the top screen and not the map. Is it just an option to toggle between the two or did they go back to making you stop the game to check the map?

You can toggle. It's been that way since DoS.

Someone posted up a FAQ on CV Dungeon forums regarding the game.

DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED:

I'm not seeing
Vampire Killer
in the soundtrack listing, though
Operation "VK"
may be it or a variation at least. I'll be pretty pissed if they don't use it when the
Vampire Killer
is an essential part of the story this time. Whereas the song was in Dawn of Sorrow for seemingly no reason, other than just being a badass song. :)
