Thank the heavens that shitty ass low 24 fps isn't going to be the standard for much longer on most films. Can't wait to check this out.

The film will be the next 3D benchmark before the Avatar sequels.

I really love how they're gearing everything around shooting it in 3D - even down to the concept artists structuring the depth in their concept art.

Exactly. People bitch about gimmicks and whatnot, when they haven't even given the tech time to grow and mature along with the people actually working with it. Color tv didn't always look hot...hell, tv didn't always look hot.

This is going to be so good. Buying tickets at a high price on release date.

I complain about 3d because the glasses reduce alot of the light and cause me headaches.

Hopefully with 48 fps this is reduced some what although it wont do anything for the amount of light let in

Transformers 3 proved that the light issue is completely bunk.

Properly color timed film + good theater projection makes the light issue utterly non existant.

This isn't a problem with 3D inherently. Its a problem with many theater's approach to exhibiting 3D properly with the interest of saving costs on bulbs.

Is Jackson's stomach growth a contribution to the 3D effect?

I think its more a sign that he's remembered his happy thought back in Middle Earth and is back to his heroic self.

I was about to say it myself - looks like he's gained quite a bit of that weight back. Hopefully that's a good sign for the movies.

Yeah, it's kind of sad though, I bet he worked really hard to get it off, I always thought he looked much better thin though.

Is there any reason they're doing 48fps instead of jumping all the way to 60? Seems like if you're going to so it you may as well go all the way, but I don't really know much about it.

The more frames you have, the more things are going to cost. Expect Avatar sequels to be 60fps.

About the cost or about Avatar?

The cost - Definitely.

Avatar sequels are all but confirmed for 60fps. Cameron has said its his intention and I don't see Fox telling Cameron no.

Interesting... the best 3d I have seen was some underwater nature footage at Best Buy... My suspicion is that it was 60fps or 48fps... so I can't wait to see more 3D at those frame rates.

Also the Hubble 3D at IMAX was also unbelievable at times.

Holy crap. They're taking the tech as seriously as possible with this film (from the threads to the makeup to even the concept art) and it will make the end result that much better. What a shame this would be if it were some half assed post conversion (with no 2d option in theaters).

Bilbo's robe looks pimp as fuck and the biggest omg for me was:

1) Frodo in costume on set
2) "48 fps is like cutting a hole in the back of the theater as if you were seeing through to the real world" having something with this much detail applied to my most hyped sci-fi/fantasy film ever makes me happy

I hope my theater is 48fps capable, and I fucking hope colors aren't dimmed too bad by the shitty 3d glasses. That's the biggest problem for me, dimmer colors.

I could watch a 2 hour film of just the actors in their dwarf costumes on set joking and fooling around, all these little vidocs have been pretty funny. Next year is unbelievable with batman avengers bond and this coming out.

I'm not even a big fan of this franchise but damn that vlog made me hyped. Just the level of attention that's going towards getting 3D right, and then 48fps is sweet icing on the cake. Movie is going to be a total holiday event.

yeah the one detailing the cast was my favorite of all the production diaries so far. And there's so much of this kind of stuff in the extended dvds for lotr.

Hobbit
Bond
Batman
Prometheus
Cloud Atlas
Lincoln

These are all movies that could be my most anticipated of any other year.

There are some other flicks coming that I'm definitely looking forward to as well, like Brave and John Carter.

I like Spielberg and Day Lewis but biopics are pretty boring for me. The only one I actually love wholeheartedly is probably Raging Bull.

I hope John Carter's a success. It's got Riggins and I've been rooting for Stanton since Nemo.

Damn really?

If you have over twice as many frames every second, that's 2.5x as many frames of CG that need to get rendered, which means the computers in the render farm are running for 2.5x as long. Time is money.

Also, WHERE'S DAH VIDEO. IT GOT TAKEN DOWN BY THE USER.

This along with everyone switching to purely 100 percent digital filming (fuck film grain) will be movie nirvana!

Very exciting. Production design looks really good.
Stereoscopic concept art strikes me as unnecessary.

I hope people don't have a knee-jerk reaction against the 48 fps look.

CAN'T WAIT for dat 48 frames.

It's so cool that it affects the detail that the makeup and costume people need to put in, because an increased framerate means that your eye is constantly taking in more detail, and things are more prone to look unrealistic. It's like increasing resolution from 2k to 5k in two dimensional detail, 24fps to 48fps increases the picture's resolution IN TIME.

The "cinematic look" of 24fps is just some arbitrary thing that has been ingrained into our minds since childhood. There's no actual reasoning behind it being believable to us subconsciously.

I was beginning to think Jackson had forgotten about the video diaries. :p

Edit: Oh, it's gone. :(

Edit 2: It's on his Facebook page.

I know, but that doesn't stop the 'higher frame rate = soap opera' association from being made.

It would be unfortunate. There will be kneejerk reactions before people become accustomed to it, it's just a matter of how widespread the negativity will be. Hopefully people will realize that the smoothness of 48fps is actually increased clarity, while soap operas are the same old 24fps that's just really blurry so it appears smooth.

I'll like 3d movies they stop needing glasses, and my brain stops screaming at me "They are fucking with your eyes son, don't be fooled!" by giving me a headache.

Is this meant to be projected in 5k ?

I can already see biggest French distributors not giving a shit and showing the movie in 24fps 2k anyway :(
There aren't really any 5K projectors available. My understanding is the 4K digital ones popular now get halved to 2K when showing 3D, so you're looking at 2K 48fps for 3D if it's a new projector, and maybeee 4K 24fps for 2D, but 2K is more likely because there really isn't a setup for delivering 4K films to theaters. Studios probably aren't keen on distributing 4K copies of their films just yet, anyways.

Laser projectors on the other hand... that will be a treat. A handful of theaters may have them by the time the Hobbit comes out.

Looks fantastic, the set they showed is something else.

Had a pair of Red/Blue 3D glasses handy, and that storyboard at the end really pops out, it kind of blows my mind each side was apparently drawn by a different person.

Try watching 3D on one of the new samsung TVs next time you're at the electronics store. I swear to god, it's like night and day as far as headaches go. There's 10x less blurriness as well, even compared to IMAX.
