New PS3 owner. What do I need to know?

Just ordered a PS3 80gb and I have no idea where to go from here. I never really followed the PS3 gaming news so I don't know what upcoming games to get excited about, what accessories to buy, or anything else a PS3 owner should know.

Help me justify my purchase, GAF. :D

Buy an HDMI cable from monoprice.com; don't get suckered into buying an expensive HDMI cable. The one from monoprice will work just fine.

Also, I'd recommend checking out these PS3 exclusives:
Ratchet & Clank Future
Metal Gear Solid 4
Uncharted
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
LittleBigPlanet
Resistance 1 & 2

This is pretty much everything you need to know. You might want to get a Blu-Ray remote if you're planning on watching DVD's/Blu-Rays on your PS3.

Also, if you're planning on playing online, I'd recommend Warhawk because it's the best online console game I've played in a long time. Just get the Fallen Star expansion pack because jet packs make the game SO much more fun. I don't really play any of the other expansions.

Are these reliable systems (mine's the 80gb w/o BC model)?

I know there's the RROD common 360 issue. Are there noise or heating issues with the PS3 model I bought? My 360's never had any problems, so hopefully the same is true here.

To eznark: :lol Dude, there's been two years of PS3 news and I'm only asking for the important highlights and others' opinions. You can't really search for that.

As far as I know the PS3 is a really reliable system. The only times I've heard them having problems were when people were downloading updated firmware. The PS3 itself is a really quiet system, quieter than my Xbox 360. It also does an amazing job at upscaling regular DVD's, so I primarily use it as my media center system for all things movies.

That system updates are evil and frequent. And don't use wireless.

I use my PS3 wirelessly and I've had no problems with it. I do, however, download system updates from my computer and put them on a USB flash drive to install to my PS3 because it takes ages to download them off of the PS3 itself.

Why did you spend 400 dollarzzz and not know what to do with it afterwards?

Got it on Dell for $325 is why, and I wanted a Blu-Ray player anyway. Also, it's the only console I don't own and I didn't want to miss out. :)

I have no problems updating my firmware over a wireless connection. The 2.53 update took about 4 minutes from download to installation.

Aren't there $175 Blu-ray players in the US?

The PS logo on the front of the console turns. That's all you need to know.

If you look at folks' experience with this on gaf, it is literally all over the place, with no reasonable explanation. Mine take about 40 minutes.

Probably. But you get so much more with the playstation, you know.

So what are my options for a PS3 microphone for online? Does it have to be a Sony or 3rd party, or can I use a not-made-for-PS3 mic of some kind (like a cell phone headset or something else)?

Yeah, it's quite strange.
Updating to 2.52 took me 10 minutes and with 2.53 it took me 4-5 minutes.

I did have the same problem awhile ago. Make sure the ps3 is in the dmz and Upnp is disabled.

It does vary a lot among users.

I have had it one time take me half an hour, but every other time it is well under 10 minutes. I dont know why or how, but it may well be based on the servers or the ISP, its not predictable and no one has figured out a pattern.

The thing is its always slow for some, and never for others... which may mean its an ISP thing.

Well, I would say get:
Uncharted
MGS4
GT5P
Ratchet
Resistance 2
Hot Shots Golf 5
Motorstorm PR
Valkyria Chronicles
LittleBigPlanet

These are the games you have been missing out and some PSN games.

I've heard the SOCOM one/official PS3 Headset is pretty good, very clear etc.
But USB ones should work too, I've tried the PS2 SOCOM ones and it worked fine.

Any usb mic. Any bluetooth headset. Or the PS Eye has built in mic. If you have a cell phone bluetooth headset, you are set.

I will never understand these people that go out and buy a $300+ piece of hardware without knowing anything about it. Never.

Anyway, get a HDMI cable if you have a HD set. Go buy Motorstorm: Pacific Rift for your offroad racing fix, pick up both Resistance games for your FPS fix, get Valkyria Chronicles if you're looking for a unique strategy-RPG hybrid, get MGS4 if you're a fan of the series and/or would like a good third-person stealth-action title, purchase Ratchet & Clank: Future for some platformer goodness, and pick up Uncharted if you're looking for a good adventury third-person shooter. Also, LBP is almost a given.

There's also quite a bit of cool downloadable titles off of PSN, but I haven't really looked into those too much.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess I oversold my ignorance of the games. In truth I have followed it a little bit (press conferences, giant enemy crabs, etc.). When LittleBigPlanet was shown my wife pretty much agreed that we'd have to get a PS3 sooner or later. In truth LBP was the system seller (along with BluRay of course).

If there's anything else please post it here. Thanks again.

EDIT: Nocebo, you asshole. :lol

Heh, I just got mine in from a fellow Gaffer, and before it even got here I had 5 games and component cables ready! :lol (I don't have an HDMI TV.. it's the next purchase)

I went with:

LBP
Disgaea3
Resistance 1 (to see if I'll like 2)
Valkyria Chronicles
R&C
MGS4 (came with the PS3 as it was the original MGS4 bundle)

I thought I read somewhere in the Post Your Goods thread that there was a Sony mic that was the best of them all right now.

My wife is completely addicted to that game. It's hard to get her off the system when I want to play some games :-(

The Sony headset that comes with either Endwar LE (79) or Socom (59) or standalone (50) does have the High Quality mode. This mode works in a handful of game so far, like SOCOM and R2 and it is indeed fantastic. Its like the person is sitting next to you. It also comes with a dock that charges it and uses the mic as a directional USB mic when its on there and it has a mute button (pretty rare on bluetooth headsets).

That said, if you already have a bluetooth headset of some sort, you can start using it right away for free, and see if you want the official one later. If you want the official one, I would recommend getting it with SOCOM or Endwar, or waiting for a sale, at 50 bucks its quite pricy.

Go buy Uncharted, Warhawk and Planet Earth Bluray.

Then buy PixelJunk Eden.

But hey, what kind of games do you like?

sigh...

Where is mention of Super Stardust HD?

BUY SUPER STARDUST HD

Heavenly Sword is good fun if you accept it's (in film terms) not going to be a mindblowing epic, but instead a popcorn action flick. Littlebigplanet is also good times.

Also, the point someone made earlier about the HDMI cable from monoprice. Be sure to do that, too.

Ahh thanks. I don't have any type of bluetooth headset (I kind of think they're a bit silly... :lol ), and was just planning on going with a simple USB one for now. Like you said though, I'll try to catch them on a sale or something.

Try out the Uncharted and Warhawk demos. I definitely recommend Warhawk as a multiplayer game.

Of course, Metal Gear Solid 4 has a great single-player, but the MP is grossly inferior. I recommend it for the story though, just as with previous installments.

High Velocity Bowling is a fun downloadable game.

The system scratches easily. I mean real easily. It collects dust like crazy too. If scratches bother you, you'll want to be extra careful when you clean it or buy a skin. Mine has micro scratches from a swiffer duster. I wasn't stressing too bad over it until my six-year-old nephew was playing close too it and slung a matchbox car which hit my PS3 and left an ugly scratch right in front of the disc slot. My OCD has kicked in and I've spent more time trying to get that scratch out than playing the system. :p

Try using the iPod scratch remover. It does work.
