New Rage Screenshots

Looks good, except something looks a bit wrong with the perspective and proportions of the first one, like that's a small remote control car.

It could be a remote controlled car. One of the interviews talked about them being in the game.

I think Rage's graphics look fantastic. Doom 4 with three times the detail at 30fps will be unreal.

Go fuck yourself lil punk. It looks amazing, especially since we're talking about console tech.

I want some gameplay though, it's time, I'm ready, show me the gameplay.

EDIT: Also, to those that say "Not that amazing graphics, just high res textures blablabla" HIGH RES TEXTURES ARE PART OF GREAT GRAPHICS

I'm starting to get excited for this, the artstyle is really great.
Also, the idea of a well-executed open world FPS is really interesting.
Polish the hell out of it, id.

The water looking like fog is weird but I'd guess these are still very early.

Th'at's just the depth test fade distance too long , not a big deal.

Looks great and organic ,but now we have to imagine these pictures without the heavy supersampling..

Yeah dude, Bethesda on idtech5 is like one of the most exciting things ever.
I mean, it's a no brainer right?
Possibly. From how I understand it tech5 doesn't do global dynamic lighting, making 'proper' day-night cycles (shadows moving with the Sun) very difficult to look convincing, if not impossible. You could probably fudge it somehow, but the best solution would just to keep it all set during the day, with story-driven switches to night if at all. Personally, I'd be fine with a super-detailed Elder Scrolls world that only changed the time of day based on certain triggers (your character requires rest, so the shift occurs then?) rather than organically, but I imagine I'd be in a minority there.

People that are complaining about graphics quality in this thread disgust me. Because of people like you, we have sub HD games and sub-30 framerates in a huge number of releases, because devs are trying to push gfx quality so the casual masses can look at pretty [bull]shoots.
Thank God that there are dev teams in this world which know how much smoother game runs at 60 frames. 60 frames in shooters > graphics complexity.

This game has both though...

What console game looks like this in general? Regardless of the FPS? Killzone 2 doesn't apply since KZ2 doesn't have good textures (I've got the game, I know what I'm talking about it), Gears of War 2 looks great at moments, but the open environments don't look great at all. Rage has open environments all the time. Uncharted 2 looks absolutely sick, but the stages are closed and small, so no comparison either. Assassin's Creed 2 might be more among the same lines, but still, this looks a lot better.

I think the problem is that we've sort of been brainwashed into thinking that if you can tell there's complex lighting at work then it must look better/more realistic. Uncharted, Killzone 2 and Gears all have complicated lighting effects going on, so immediately leap out as incredible and "realistic", but they are much further away from emulating realism than the basic lighting models employed in Dreamcast-era days. N'Gai Croal wrote an interesting article about it for EDGE magazine (the one where he used 'verisimilitude' quite appropriately and some GAF members had a mini-meltdown over its inclusion) that I encourage everyone to have a look for. The lighting on show in these RAGE screenshots is very understated and, though still far from truly real, are a million miles closer to offering naturalistic representation of real life than the games (the console-exclusive big-hitters) that wear their lighting effects on their sleeves.

Also, in my mind texture work trumps geometry detail. The reason Shenmue looked so good was because of the Dreamcast's fantastic texturing abilities, not its polygon pushing power. The reason WoW, hardly demanding by anyone's modern-definition of the word, can still look gorgeous in motion is because of Blizzard's superb texture-work. Tech5 is very exciting to me; to my eyes RAGE looks incredible.

If by "good textures" you're referring to resolution of textures upclose - then neither does this.

I'm starting to get to that point in the console gen where I want them to show next gen stuff that blows me away.
I'm starting to get to a point where I'm no longer impressed by any amount of high-res textures or high-poly character models.
Story, design, art, gameplay, animations, those are things that I can still get blown away by, and that's what developers should focus on.

GET EM!!

KZ2 did have good textures upclose though! You should know this...since you worked on it and all.

Ever since I saw UE3 engine for the 1st time...I KNEW this gen would be focused on the wrong things. What I really wanted this gen to focus on was:

Post-processing effects/special effects/animation/lighting/physics (in useful ways...hello euphoria!)/AI (and not just for fighting you...hello again euphoria!)/Image Quality!!!

This gen would have been better off if the focus was on those.

Take euphoria's Backbreaker Football:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-backbreaker/51409
(cant believe I didnt know they released a new trailer this E3)

CLEARLY not great in the texture department but everything else makes up for it. This looks like next-gen football to me...even though the visuals arent all that great (it doesnt look bad to me though). To me, this looks WAY more "next-gen" than Madden ever has (in terms of what I expected from this gen).

Now look at this (same game):
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/how-does-backbreaker/37735

The transition is very clean. The in-game captures the feel of the cinematics. I have yet to see madden have the same sort of clean transition.

Damn these look good, I would seriously eat my own head if the console versions come close.

The screens look like they are achievable on consoles. I see a couple of obvious jaggies here and there, and they don't look TOO far beyond what is in the market right now.

rage doesn't fully steam, that is a petty big deal to me...even U2 will fully steam.. everyone has their own opinion, tell sell you turd as gold

Anyway, I am very pleased with how the game looks, regardless of whether I think it is ahead of the curve or not (i dont)

Those shots look amazing.
Any chance of Rage gameplay footage on Gamescon?

Actually we're getting it at QuakeCon, which is a few days before Gamescon.

They said they might show Doom 4 when they announced their publisher, and since they've done that we might see Doom 4 there as well, but they made no promises.

Awesome pics.

My attraction to particular games is almost unexplainable, it does not go by developer, genre, or hype. For some reasons some games just jump out at me while others that everyone is hyped for don't excite me one bit.

RAGE is one of the games that for some unexplained reason I am really, really looking forward to. In fact, after Heavy Rain, this is the game that I am most hyped for in 2010, yes more then God of War 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Halo:Reach, etc.

I am just praying that they don't fuck up the PS3 build. The recent news about lower frame-rates on the PS3 version has me a bit worried.

agreed... this game looks awesome.... it's amazing the difference not have repeating tiles of textures makes...

and sad so few of the tards in this threads can see that/

While that looks good and all, I'd still like to remain cautious about the gameplay and level design of any game Id puts out. I have yet to play a game by them that I genuinely found fun (I must be the only person of the world who thought even Doom 1 and 2 got pretty dull after the first couple of levels).

Uh, people always say *i must be the only person* and that is never true until now, congrats. Doom is what turned on probably the vast majority of pc gamers who are in their late 20s to later 30s.

Thing is, when Doom 1 and 2 came out, I'd rather play the Ultima Underworld games instead. They, too, had fluid 3D graphics (although they didn't look as flashy) and were astoundingly complex first-person RPGs. My Doom sessions usually consisted of beating the first couple of levels and then noclipping through a couple more until I got bored and quit.

The water edges are a bit too fuzzy, makes it look more like green smoke.
I'm so disappointed by the brown/mad-max style... the tech looks pretty great, but creatively it's just so uninspired...

Doom is 2.5D not 3D.

Amazing how so many people were shunned from giving it props because of not knowing if screengrabs were from pc or consoles lol :lol ..at the same time there were others that were impressed..then soon as it was clarified it was probably console versions..the pc guys then began the bitching and mocking lol ...i swear some of you are goofy.

Regardless of what platform the screens are from..they LOOK GOOD, PERIOD :D

I'm not sure about the whole megatexture thing. The fact that you can't have day/night cycles using this tech makes me wonder how they are going to get around this in Rage, an openworld shooter/racer that you'd expect to have a day/night cycle

It's not a side effect of megatexture, it's just a choice they made for Rage really.

They or someone else (a idTech5 licensee) could add global dynamic lighting to the engine later if they wanted.

Ah, right, I'm sorry. I totally forgot how back then everyone was all like "Holy shit, have you played Doom? You get to shoot monsters, but in 2.5D!" :p

You made a technical statement that was wrong, don't get all pissy about it.

Alot seems to be sacrificed for that stable 60fps open world angle...

I can't help but be unconvinced until I see footage that this will be 60 fps (No, I don't buy into the id koolaid). The reactions here are amusing though after that CoD: MW2 thread resolution vs. fps thread though. :lol

I thought global illumination had to be prebaked? At least that's what I got from the Edge article in this months issue, it really makes it sound like that global dynamic lighting is impossible with iD tech 5

I don't think it's that it's impossible, but rather that they don't feel it's worth it when it comes to the visuals:performance ratio.

Ok, screens look nice.

But whats this game actually about? Setting, premise etc.

Kind of like Fallout, just replace the nukes with a big rock iirc.

Still, I think it looks awesome and I'll probably buy it as long as the Ps3 version is 60fps like the others.
