New Sony Patent Shows DualShock 5 Taking Voice Commands.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has been granted a new patent earlier today that suggests DualShock 5 to be able to take voice commands through a built-in microphone.

The patented technology aims to control various devices mounted on and connected to the controller while avoiding unintended complications and operations. The showcased method can be taken as a way to access features on both DualShock 5 and PlayStation 5 by feeding voice commands into the microphone of the controller. The published claims also point out that haptic feedback will indicate the processing status of all voice-related input.

I’ve always seen Xbox fans praise the voice commands as one of the good parts of Kinect, so this could be nice. Most also wouldn’t mind having a casual online mic, if the quality is good enough.

Not sure there’s much potential outside of that, though. The most Nintendo ever accomplished was blowing on things, calling dogs, and ‘Blue. Blue. Blue!’.

It seems like an overall good add, though.

I for one can't stand voice commands. But having an Aussie accent is probably the issue. But talking to a machine is weird to me.

But how can they patent this. Isn't this already in every device already.

Mobile phones. iPads. Amazon echoes.

PS4 also had voice commands.

PS4 also had voice commands.

And these would be accessible hands-free, out of the box, this time, and probably more advanced.

They never meant it. Voice commands at a system wide level are stupid.

Did you know PS4 has those same voice commands and it's had them since day one?

Somehow, I don’t think you’re the arbiter of who means what, and the value of a function.

I almost never use Siri, or the other voice assistants, but I’m not everyone. Somebody may find value in this kind of feature, or I may change my mind down the road.

And yes, I knew. I was pointing to the closest example I’d frequently heard (people don’t talk much about the PS4 equivalent), to discuss interesting new news. Not everything has to be a fanboy dick-measuring competition.

Neat. Although I doubt I'll end up using it much, unless it's very responsive and well integrated into the OS.

Both had voice commands, but Xbox was more vocal about it. Now, it's PS5 touting voice commands, but perhaps Xbox will have them again too.

So exactly who am I fanboying here?

I think it would actually be neat if the new dualshock included built in speakers and a microphone for online multiplayer communication. Headsets will always be better but allowing voice communication for everyone right out of the box without the need for additional accessories will only help online communities.

Stadia's controller already has a voice commands via google assistant. Xbox Elite 2 Controller doesn't have any speakers or microphone. Including speakers and a microphone for uses more than voice commands might put the dualshock ahead of the curve.

Ps5 Afro Republican.

The democrats are doing badly. News story and link here, here, and here!

The voice commands are coming from neogaf. If you say ps5 the pleasure, it will tell you to pay for porn.

I don't use the voice commands PS4 already has, but I guess it's good for accessibility. If it could be an OS level implementation so people who can't use a controller could at least play stuff like turn based rpgs, sims & strategy games and visual novels, that would be cool.

I have never used it, it is useless.

It is faster to use the control than the voice command, which then does not even detect the voice sometimes -_-

Game console controller. Specific enough to get away with it.
It's 2020, patent clerks don't give a damn about prior art any more ;).

I talk to the Google Assistant and Alexa all the time. I'd rather have a compatible console to that tech than to have it work separatedly.

If PS5 connects to those services and turns the controller into a Google Assistant, I'm interested. If it's only to open Netflix and stuff like that, I don't really care. I have many devices that do so (including a phone that is pretty much glued to my hand).

So probably three games will use like all of Sony’s controller gimmicks. I can’t even recall the last game I played that used the dumb touchpad for anything but a menu button or something.

Or the genius light bar which destroys the battery life

As a fan of Xbox when the Kinect released, this is hilarious lol

its useless and not practical for gaming. Now, if you want to play and stop netflix, its great.

The fact that most people don't know the PS4 had that feature explains why MS wanted kinect to be required with all consoles, otherwise it would just be a niche feature from the only fact that it's optional.

Alexa appereantly also works on xbox?

It was actually quite useful when it was system-wide and you could trigger any on-screen command through voice ("if you can click on it, you can say it too"). With time they removed many kinect features and in the end only pre-baked commands like starting a game, turning the console on-off or switching channels remain. Still convenient but not as much.
And Alexa isn't really embedded in the console, but you can use an Alexa device to control the console (so they say anyway, never got to try it)

Also regarding the original post, that's just another bullshit patent as far as innovation is concerned : embedded microphones for voice commands have been a thing for years, can't believe the stuff Sony lawyers can get through....

When I bought the Xbox one with Kinect the best way to get the voice commands to work for me was to put on an American accent 😂

That said I hate all voice commands. I feel
Like a drongo when using them...
