new Super Mario Bros DS & Daisenryaku DS Famitsu scan

Good observation lancubap.

Though it's possible that the clock counts upwards like it does on Sonic Rush.

The backgrounds look greatly improved. The first few screens were very bare and tacky imo. The new ones show more detail and they look great. I like.

Anyone know if the co-op will be online through WFC?

That's the most evil looking Buzzy Beetle I've ever seen. Red eyes! (Well, it makes sense from a design standpoint, since they like the dark, but Buzzy's always had normal eyes before.)

Looks like the spread had fun showing off the "classic" moves. I love how it's showing this detailed thing about bumping the Hammer Bros. from below to defeat it old-school style, when I've done the exact same thing several times to beat the same enemy in a recent title like Super Princess Peach.

But one thing that bothers me is I see it. I think I do. Top left shot, a giant, star-emblazened coin that it looks like only Super-sized Mario will be able to get to. They talked about it before, in a semi-recent interview, how just beating the levels wouldn't be enough to progress, because they threw in something goal-oriented like the stars in M64. Friggin' star coins. Bleaugh.

Still, though, I'm hyped, I want this, it'll be awesome. I've got to admit, SPP fed my craving a bit, but I'll be done with that in a few more days, and will still welcome this one with open arms (and wallet).

Maybe the star coins will be more like the Yoshi Coins in Super Mario World. I wouldn't mind collecting coins to open up content or certain paths just as long as it's completly optional.

Neo for president!

NSMB looks hawwwwwwwt as hell.

I never liked the artstyle for Yoshi's Island on the SNES to be honest. Too pastel-ish, too stylized ... infact I think the artstyle is a big reason why the Donkey Kong Country games sold circles about Yoshi's Island.

I prefer the bright, colorful, but not too crazy artstyle of the NES Marios, and NSMB seems to be more in that vein.

It's not going to be exactly like the old 2D Marios because the characters are polys, but the upside of using polys is going to result in really great animation and some wild character resizing power-ups, which seem to be intergral to this game.

I want this game but I want to play it with the DSlite not the old DS. :/

To all you guys complaining: go screw yourselves.

We're getting a NEW sidescrolling Mario title that looks so hot I'd probably have sex with it and all you guys can do is complain? COME ON!

That's the worst artstyle I've ever seen for a Mario game. Uninspired is the word that comes to mind...is NST working on this?
Can you explain why? It's more vivid and alive than any of the NES marios, and they had the best style in my opinion (the all-star editions, mind). It's more lively, but has the same feel.. A perfectioned SMB art style.

Yoshi's island artstyle is awesome, but for a Mario game guys? No thanks.
This game looks awesome!

The whiners need to track down some videos, even the older footage is impressive because the 3d models animate very nicely. Look at it in motion first folks.

I agree with you on that. Yoshi Island's style is more suited towards a slower paced game than a typical Mario platformer.

Ugh the same ones trolling this game are the same ones usually trolling Nintendo for everything, so no big news here.

On topic, this game looks awesome i love the artstyle and i'm sure it'll look better on the DS than it does in the screenshots, this game + DS lite absolute perfection, may can't come soon!!!!!.

Bingo. I'm probably the biggest fan of YI's design and art out there, but YI was a floating and less speedy game than the main mario games, and as such the sketchbook crazyness was perfectly suited. For a SMB game you have to have a relatively practical and "straight" style to compliment the gameplay.

I fully agree here as well.

I'm actually playing YI right now (one of the finest games ever made)!

I wouldn't say it looks awesome in these photos but in motion it looks much better. So what if it isn't the best mario graphic wise, it will still rule=)

I like how Nintendo fanboys think Mario/Zelda games are somehow untouchable.

Lol. Yeah, like how we always defended Mario Sunshine, and WW when it first came ou...oh wait.

Anyhoo, although I would personally love to have seen sprites myself, the game looks much better in motion, so it's all good, I suppose.

I find it hard to believe that some of you are actually defending the look of this game. It's clearly inferior in all respects to the old games.

I think the common misconception with the Yoshi's Island style is that hardcore gamers on board's like this love that game and think everyone loved it.

Truth is, that game was not popular with general gamers. A lot of people did not like the artstyle at all. It was too far removed from the other Mario games.

I even feel that Super Mario World was kinda pushing it ... becoming a bit too "zany" and I never really liked the Mario sprite they used in SMW.

Holy shit.

Post of the year.

I really expect NSMB to be closest to SMB1 in gameplay, which will unfortunately cause a lot of disappointment among many.

I fucking love SMB1 though. The mandatory Toad collection in SPP really irks me, and makes me yearn for a platformer where i just have to run to the right to finish a level. I really hope elements like the inclusion of a timer indicate that I'm right in my hunches.

Let's be honest, in the past Mario games the animations usually SUCKED! I think they are going the right way with NSMB!
I was always complaining about the horrible animations in Mario games*, 3 frames wtf? This will be great and fluid!

(*but I'm a Sega fanboy so I always prefered Sonics awesome animations)

This does kinda remind me of waiting in line to be seated for the X-Men movie that came out in 2000 ... there was this typical fat, comic book geek, even clutching some of the comics in his hand who was first in line for the movie but already bitching about all the changes in the movie and how it would suck.

:lol

Yeah, I feel the same way. YI was okay, but it's not the be all end all art style for Mario related games that many seem to feel. Personally, I thought SMW had the best style, but that's just me.

Sounds about right. Some of them are also the same people who were comlaining about TP looking "dull", so yeah, just ignore them.

The mushrooms in the sky looks beautiful.

Also, I've played SMB1 much more than #3.. I've always listed SMB3 as my favorite mario game, but I'm not sure... SMB is always so easy to pick up and play. As the guy above me said, it's just pure joy to boot up and run run run through the levels.

I think that you may have finally defeated the haters. Let the hyping commence!

Even Drinky Crow has gone on record as looking foward to this game. The haters are probally just a noisy minority.

Edit--------

I'm a member now! My thoughts are instantly a thousand times more valuable.

The art has grown on me in all ways except Mario himself.
The blocks, pipes, coins, backgrounds, and enemies are CG-ish and reminiscent of a technically-superior Yoshi's Story, but Mario in ginormous form looks too Mario 64-ish, grainy and not as clean as his surroundings--just take his hands or hair as an example. I'm hoping part of it just has to do with the quality of the scans...

The other great thing about this is ... we can probably expect more 2D Mario games, because this is definitely going to sell a bazillion copies.

New Super Mario Bros. 2/3 etc. It's 1989 all over again! :)

The DS purchase is worth it several times over already for me just based on that.

Don't know about that. The bajillions of copies sold on SMW didn't seem to urge Nintendo to make another one for 15 years...

I don't remember from watching the videos... Can you scroll back to the left once you've walked right in NSMB? I think you can, but it would be awesome if you couldn't. :D

Those games looked great even though they were held back by the hardware they were running on. DS is MUCH more powerful than the NES/SNES and NSMB looks terrible, they worked so hard on making it look technically sound that they completely ignored making it stylized and unique. It's the DKC syndrome.

If ind it funny that you didn't include any Yoshi's Island shots:

How can NSMB be made by the same company that made YI? I just don't get how that's possible. I'm happy that there's a new SMB, but at least make it look like something that belongs in the series.

*thinks*

Wasn't there a specific reason they didn't make a new Mario for a while? I read once that Miyamoto and co. were planning a sequel, but because of other SNES games(Donkey Kong Country?), there was no need.

I don't know how you can look at some of those NSMB shots and say they don't look artistically good. It's like a more down-to-earth mushroom island, with great subtle effects like the round mountains fading away behind several layers of clouds.

Donkey Kong Country sold like 5x the amount of Yoshi's Island though, so your arguement kinda goes down the toliet right there. You may prefer YI, but the casual public really does prefer the more DKC-ish style.

People like the more "basic" look for Mario games, which is what Nintendo is trying to recreate here.

True enough, just saying that I don't prefer the artstyle...I know that this is more appealing to the masses than something like YI.

That said I'll still buy this game (I'm a whore for 2D Mario titles), but I hope they continue to refine the visual style before release.

And I must say that some of my hostility towards this title comes from not knowing if Ninty can do a good 2D mario title anymore, Miyamoto is too hands off nowadays...and we all saw what happened to Mario Sunshine :/

I don't think the style will be refined much, because this is the style Nintendo wants, a more basic style, a throwback to the older 2D Marios rather than Yoshi's Island.

Mr. Tezuka (director of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World) is closely overseeing this project, so I wouldn't worry about it.

i just hope that that giant mario crap is only used twice on the game.

I remember reading that you have to collect such and such a number of power ups at one time to get giant. I could be mistaken though.

Actually, yes. Miyamoto said that Rare was doing a great job of making multimillion selling sequels that there wasn't a need for them to make another SM platfomer (even though he hated DKC :( )

Give me a sec to find that NSMB video in motion...

I'm reminded of another aging franchise that resorted to turning their character giant-sized in a desperate attempt to instill excitement:
