Next-gen Racing Graphics Face-off | (Next-gen means current-gen)

Did a quick time lapse near the beach. Amazing how many details I didn't notice while playing. Smoke from the chimneys isn't always there, doesn't always blow the same direction, puddles get bigger when it rains and dry out when it stops, the garden lamps in the yard emit light and the skybox is just ridiculous. This game does cloud layers which FH3 didn't so you can get lower lying clouds.

That is unbelievable good.

Absolutely amazing. I didn't know the puddles change size when it rains and then dry out again. Crazy amount of detail for an open world racing game! FH4 isn't just the best looking racing game right now, I dare say it's one of the best looking games across all genres, and hats off to the optimization efforts on PC. I can't believe I can run it in 4K / 60 with my 7 year old CPU and OC 1080 GTX in HDR with mostly ultra settings + 2xMSAA.

Some gameplay and photo mode shots on the X. I just got to Spring time and boy is this game really a looker. No game comes close to FH4
From the pics you posted, I don't see it....not even close...Texture work is lacking on the environments, some of your pics don't come together as well composed. In motion, the aggressive lod is very distracting and in your face, crowds are still 2D for the most part. Generally CA does not look good either in this game....I think people are attracted to the hyper realistic lighting in Horizon, but comparing it to other top games for lighting there's no nuance to the way the game is lit. It's better over Horizon 3 in that aspect, but no where near the top racers for lighting still. In any case, a graphical comparison of the two games....

I'm not saying Horizon 4 is a bad looking game btw, aesthetically it's a good looking title, but it's not the best I've seen and as I've said before, this game is running better because certain things had to be dialed back. I don't think the lighting or effects engine is that expensive over FH3's either...

This stuff isn't really hitting. Keep trying...

Nice joke post.

"Texture work is lacking". Are you looking at the same buildings as I am in those photos? Or are you just blatantly ignoring them to focus on a grass texture somebody found in your linked video?
"Aggressive lod very distracting and in your face". You inferred that from the photos, or from that video? Amazing. As a guy that has actually played the game, nothing noticable was assaulting my face (apart from a big grin).

You dont even try anymore. You just regurgitate guff from...well, who knows where, because you didnt provide any shred of evidence. You just cant seem to let people express their appreciation for Forza without trying to counter it, EVERY SINGLE TIRESOME TIME. We all know how you feel about it, petal.

To be brutally honest though, Im still recovering from the shock that you made a post without mentioning foliage or pit crews...

I really honestly think this guys sick, delusional basement dweller, he gets these panic attacks anything good or positive Microsoft...it just gets to the point where is disgusting how he derails every single Xbox thread with negative.

FH4 looking sexy as hell got him heated to no end. First of all I heard you steal other ppls pics from different forums, your not an Xbox owner, and you don't have FH4..what the @@$% are you doing grown ass man on the forums, stop embarrassing and exposing yourself.

FH4 looks brilliant but if I was to nitpick a couple of things it would be the shader (correct word? I don't know) or lack there of that they use on the road when it's wet at night time. It's barely noticeable most of the time. It would have been great to be riding in the city at night, pouring the rain, with puddles and reflective streets shining everywhere. And the windshield wipers don't affect the rain very much when driving from inside the car.

All the strengths and all the weaknesses of GTS summed up in in one video:

Inconsistency. GTS does some things perfectly, like it's lighting. It's industry tops. It's hard to argue. The LOD of the car drops so much when you start the race though that I could grab the beetle model from Forza 4 to compare it to, and it still looks worse. The track in the GTS video is another example. Some tracks are wonderful like Willow Springs, but this Tokyo track appears to have massive buildings popping in directly in front of the car in plain view (2:45), buildings have plastic-wrap for windows, environment LOD swaps are just as obvious as in FH4 (which is displaying the entire open world at all times). The shadow quality change line is literally two car lengths ahead, shadows in general are a mess. When it goes back into replay mode at the end of the race, the beetle looks like it came from a modern racing game again, and the masterfully placed replay cameras and great lighting engine take care of the rest using a DOF effect to hide issues up-close. The replay looks great, but why are there any issues with this track? It's completely closed with nothing to draw in the distance save for the low-detail buildings. There are no weather effects at all. The skybox is a jpeg. There is no damage modeling. Even the audio is abysmal, but that's another topic.

Why is the Tokyo track so terrible while the willow springs track is so good?

Forza 4 beetle for reference:

I should calrify, Forza is not devoid of this issue either. But the difference between the good and bad is night and day in GTS, with the bad being outright awful and the good being brilliant. Forza has always been consistently really good or kinda bad. FH4 so far has been at worst "Eh, it's okay"

I drove through a creek and when coming out the other side the mud at the edge deformed and water from the creek filled it, I've never seen anything like this in a racing game. The attention to detail is mind blowing.

Are you aware that you posted Forza Motorsport 4 and not Horizon? The former is a 360 game.
While I do realise this is a current-gen comparo, I think it served to back a compelling argument.

Deformation is awful. Where are the tyre traces in snow? Car doesn't leave that kind of traces in snow. It's unrealistic and wrongly. Like i said, good idea, bad execution.

While I wouldn't say the deformation is awful, you do make a point. The snow deformation did look better in FH3's Blizzard mountain expansion. The area you blew through left chunks of show around the deformation and it also left tread marks on the ground in the middle of the ruts. I'm curious why FH4 doesn't have the same effects as you leave tire marks everywhere else in the game. Overall the snow in FH4 is better, it sparkles like real snow, the snow coming off the vehicles and how ice forms on things is just better overall. The deformation in mud is a better effect, especially around the big puddles and rivers, as the deformed area fills with water and really looks like someone went mudding. An example of it not working as well is in the quarry. In the summer the whole pit is full of mud but no water (right now it's fall so the quarry is completely flooded with water) so the effect isn't as nice. The area you drove though does become glossy and in the right light can look good but I think the effect is best used sparingly, which it is other than the quarry. Right now though, I can't think of a game that does it better. Even the Dirt games didn't do mud effects as well.

Sooo... changing the subject from FH4 for a moment, and while on the subjects of inconsistency and deformation, Wreckfest will be coming to consoles next month. It's not a big budget AAA game, so some of the textures and foliage even at max settings on PC look a bit ass by today's standards, there's a lack of AO in places, but other areas look fantastic - the cars themselves and some of the environment and trackside objects for example. The wreckage and carnage is glorious in my opinion.

It'll play at max settings, 4K60fps on a 980TI so graphics will probably be fairly similar for consoles, but frame rate? I think the Jaguar CPU's might start sweating when the physics get going. No fancy photomode shots here, these are no HUD, real time gameplay Steam screenshots.

Wreckfest is a funny one. On the one hand, the assets are a little lower quality than AAA games as you'd expect, but on the other hand, the lighting just looks really really natural to me. It works well IMO.

The game has come a long ways. I bought it when it first came out in beta and almost asked for my money back because it ran like crap. It's been a huge overhaul. The damage model is great and these are the guys who brought us Destruction Derby on the original Playstation which was an awesome title back then.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how the consoles handle this game's chaos. Bodies flying around, twisted car husks, destroyed lawn tractors... I really wish the industry would focus less on getting car licensing and spend more time on things like crash and damage physics. The licensing killed realistic damage in most games outside of non-street cars in sims. We'll never see a Toyota GT86 in a video game crumple like an accordion as a train smashes into it at 200mph because if Toyota ever saw it their marketing people would drop dead. "People will say our cars aren't safe!" I always liked the "almost a real car" designs GTA and old arcade racers like Burnout used as it allowed things like the collapsing cars in Paradise to exist.

They don't have the budget or numbers a AAA title has but I always enjoy the games Bugbear make. Games like FlatOut, Burnout, PGR, Ridge Racer, Sega Rally were always my go-to games so it's incredibly sad when I look at the market for arcade racers and see nothing but closed studios. Bizarre and Criterion are gone, Sega may as well be too. Even Evolution was closed down despite over 2 million in sales. I see the Horizon games doing well and have hope that somehow arcade racers will see a resurgence as currently it's pretty slim pickings.

On a side note, that JLG man-lift in the second shot is really well modeled. I haven't played this since it was first available on PC, it looks like they've made a ton of improvements. I was having a hell of a time getting the game not to crash.

Yea Wreckfest is awesome! It runs great at 4K 60 FPS on my PC and looks really good in motion. They really nailed the physics and the damage is the best of any racing game other than BeamNG, which is not quite a racing game. It's a really fun game overall. I wish they would add VR support though.

This is what the drone was made for, hopefully Playground takes another look at it and realises it needs to be able to go higher and clip though big trees. Nothing worse than being two minutes into an awesome chase clip of a race and coming to a hard stop against a tree trunk. Just imagine if you could pilot the drone while a bunch of people race up the mountain roads west of Edinburgh. There could be some WRC tier footage made. The drone shots show how great the draw distances are in the game. There is LOD pop-in, but usually at a far enough distance you have to be looking for it to notice.

I made this yesterday as well, hadn't gotten around to posting it as the capture program cut out 1/4 of the image for some reason and grabbed them in VHS quality. Tons of cars were passing by the image leaving a wake which would have looked great in the stop motion. It sucks a bit but it does shot some nice sky I guess.

I also left my PC running while I was out today. It captured 1 4K image every second for about an hour and a half. 4864 frames, 4.5GB. I've done three of these now and have never managed to catch a thunderstorm, heavy rain, or low lying fog. I run into them while playing but when I set up a drone to capture anything the storms seem to vanish instantly. The weather is extremely random and rare events like full out storms sometimes don't even occur during a daytime cycle.

looks decent, hope it plays like destruction derby did back in the day
