Next Gen Sonic - New Pics (720p) (warning 56k)

His fingers look low poly. But overall, a meh effort.

Looks pretty decent in motion, though.

Sadly, looks like shit. Like Sonic Heroes running on my PC 2 years ago.

And I had such high hopes :( I'm in the minority that liked Heroes and both Adventures (for Cube).

Naka: "NOW WE MUST ADD A DOZEN NEW EXTREMELY GAY CHARACTERS INCLUDING 'COOKIE THE WOMBAT' AND 'SELTZER THE ARMADILLO'"

The E3 demo LOOKED nice, but it didn't seem like there was anything new gameplay wise.

A "meh effort?" "Ugh?" :/

Maybe it doesn't translate as well in screens, but in motion this looks really quite incredible, imo.

Never seen that, was it real-time or CG?

Got link?

Looks current gen w/ its shitty textures and underwhelming geometry. What the fuck happened to Sonic Team? They used to be so awesome...

"What the fuck happened to you, man? You used to be beautiful."

Revolution FTW!

Sonic Revolution is the true next gen sonic game...with next gen gfx and next gen gameplay...:D

Sonic has totally lost his identity. There was a time when this franchise had a very unique and stylized design. I think Sonic Team has forgotten.

It looks fine, the shots where Sonic is shadowed look very nice, in fact Sonic in general looks pretty unique when you look at all of the other next gen character art directions in comparision, sure the geometry is lowish for the environment but whatever, the game will look good in motion if they can give us more than Sonic Adventure style levels with prettied up geometry and textures.

It's go as far to say that Sonic himself looks really good, if not outright great. He looks incredibly smooth and destinctive.

Sadly, the gameplay will probably suck. Hopefully they're improving the formula from Sonic Adventure... and keep this game focused on Sonic instead off all the other characters.

Hey Sega you want more money? Make a game with just Sonic, and then you can make a totally seperate game with Knuckles and Shadow etc...

I see grinding, rails, narrow raceways ... it's going to be another autopilot 3D Sonic game.

But hey, atleast we'll get a load of rectangular blocks falling on top of each other due to the Havok physics engine!

I like it. Finally the visuals of a 3d Sonic game are looking
like good Dreamcast graphics again.
Not as PS2ish as Sonic Heroes and Shadow.

I don't see a problem with the grinding. Final Rush is one of the best levels in a Sonic game ever imo and its basically nothing but grinding. The best thing about these pics (and what we know about the game as of now) is that all we're seeing is Sonic. No Amy, Big, E102 ect. Which gives the possibility that its the first Sonic 3D where its just him as the playable character.

Don't tempt fate ... ;)

This looks like dogshit. So this is next-gen, the same thing with more polys, and the amazing innovation of havoc physics? Crazy! Talk about an ancient game dragged kicking and screaming into the next-gen.

When was the last time Sonic Team did anything original or interesting? The original PSO for Dreamcast? Someone needs to retire Naka.

You look like dogshit. And so does your next-gen.

Well the PSO team still seem to have it, judging by PSU. If they ever get round to releasing it that is, I'm not entirely sure we're going to see it on March 30th.

No chance. They are just holding back the REAL pap for E3.

Looks horrible. I prefer Sonic in 2D form. Can't they make a 2D sonic with all the graphical bells and whistles of other grand 2D titles like VF Joe or PSP Ghouls and Ghosts?

Speculation or insider info? Looking at the name the game officially has (Sonic the Hedgehog) it looked like they were going ot make it his game only this time. And Naka recently said he wanted to do that with a 3D Sonic.

It just looks far too Sonic Team USA for my liking, I was hoping for them to reinvent things for this.

But rails leading into springboards? Really narrow runways? It just looks like being a barely interactive 3D rollercoaster again, with one pre-determined route, and falls to your death if you are rude enough to try and deviate from that. It basically is on-the-rails.

Sonic Team USA have never been good at deep level design, which is why I wouldn't be surprised if you see other characters popping up again to pad the game out. And even if you only play as Sonic, I'm not sure how interesting an entire game of on-the-rails Sonic would be. The Sonic/Shadow levels seemed so good in the SA2 mainly because of the contrast with the other characters. It was such a huge relief to play them. An entire game of them though?

I personally think it looks pretty good. However, the gameplay seems kind of sluggish in the video I saw. *crosses fingers* C'mon Yuji, give me some much-needed love. :(

sure looks hot, but then I imagine playing it with sonic adventure mechanics and I shiver a little.

Is it just me or did the textures get worse? Looks terrible either way.

[Edit: Picture removed by request]

How can you call that terrible ?

We spend days here arguing that a Sonic game must have incredible top speed and YET huge environments with possible never pop-up or draw-in, all nicely streamed in and out... you want that and people criticize the low polyness of the environments. Sure, Sonic Team has deserved some criticism in these years, but you cannot look at screens like that and say wtf it is crap I could do better than them... it is not fair to them in the least.

We've had a request from Sega to remove these pictures. Please don't repost them, and bear in mind that asking for PMs in such threads (even by amusingly highlighting the letters 'P' and 'M' in an otherwise innocuous sentence) is punishable by death.

tell Sega to say it to my face.

I don't know why, but I'm intrigued by it. I don't think it looks terrible at all. It's not cutting edge or anything, but you know, it might be fun. Might.

I don't like how real/dull/muted the gameworld is or how skinny Sonic is. Sonic is such an unrealistic character he looks tacked-on in a realistic environment. They could have really gone to town on bright fantasy worlds but we get these Myst-type almost real worlds.

It's like Sega just don't know what the hell to do with Sonic. Or Sonic Team just don't want to be making Sonic games anymore and they're mutating the license to something closer to what they want to be doing.

SEGA: Oh noes! The public knows our game has Sonic running around!

Nintendo: Shit! They must know we have a waterpack for Mario!

EA: Dammit! Let's ditch the mini camp and superstar modes!

3D Realms: Duke Nukem Forever is in full production.
