Nier: Automata Analysis (MisterCaption, 3hrs long)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X2tiINl-X8

Video has (admittedly not very descriptive) timestamps in the description so you can skip around of watch it in multiple sittings:

0:05:32 - Pl[a]tinum Is Unbreakable
1:37:03 - egin Again
2:05:21 - What [C]omes Around
2:47:11 - Trage[D]y
2:47:38 - The [E]n[D]

Spoilers of course, both in the video and this thread.

enjoying it so far...but my first very small nitpick is how most of the analysis done from fans who are not familiar with YT erroneously attribute the shifts in camera perspective and bullet hell segments to Platinum.

YT and Cavia came up with the style originally and YT himself has always been obsessed with bullet hell...Platinum having their own fans of shoot em up segments and genre shifting just made the pairing work all the better.

Skipped to the end because it seems like it's mostly just describing the game being played.

And man.

He has some pretty amazing misconceptions and misinformation about the plot.

For people who finished the game. (I mean finished all 5 main endings btw)

Thinks destroying yorha was meant to show that the humans are killed. Doesn't understand why the backdoor is there at all.

Thinks the yorha bunker are where the androids are all created.

Seems to want to impose his idea about being able to completely define the androids and machine's programming. I mean, you could write it like that, but it's not even really the point of the story where it explores them evolving beyond their programming through countless years of research.

Yeah I noticed jumping around. Its kinda sad considering he gave all these hours to make this video.

Also seems to have a real sticking point about them having emotions because, I guess, machines and androids should logically be like that? I mean, yeah probably, but it's not really the point of the story.

Yeah, even early on(already listened about 30 minutes in)he has misconceptions about the plot, misses key things about the earlier parts of the game entirely and has a PC snobbish attitude which annoys me.

No, we dont need to hear that "everyone who lives in the 21st century plays on PC"

Also could be more concise because jeez, analysis isn't a let's play lol. Don't really need a play by play of the events when I want to hear discussion about a game.

Obviously not finished yet, but seeing yet another person dump Transformers: Devastation in with Korra/TMNT is sad. It's a decent budget game! Desperately needed another tileset or two, and more enemies, but the combat is up to Platinum standards.

So... I'd be disappointed if I watched this?

I'll probably have it on in the background at least I guess.

Yeah, skipped to the last part to see his overall thoughts on the game but he just made a lot of misconceptions and thought these were inconsistencies with the plot.

I mean, the plot isn't perfect, but what he surmised was actually far from what happened in the game. If he had the time to make a 3-hour video, I wish he could have taken a few minutes to read other analyses or a few other story beats he might have missed.

Depends on what you're going to be disappointed by.

We shouldn't be disappointed with negative takes on things we love because diversity of opinion is good, but if you want to read an analysis of someone who's negative on it but understood the narrative behind it then yeah, you're going to be disappointed.

Also the format is real tedious to go through.

At least the waypoint nier spoilercast should be releasing over the weekend.

Welp, thanks bud, you saved me 3hrs.

Another real issue is he keeps (at least 1 1/2 hrs in) acting like N:A is a character action game because he refuses to label it as an RPG because it has no role playing.

I watched a few minutes and it seems more like a really perfunctory blow-by-blow surface reading than an actual analysis or close-reading. Also it's THREE FUCKING HOURS LONG. That is too long. No good video essay is 3 hours long because that's not an essay, that's Titanic.

The latter. I don't care if someone disliked it, I just like hearing more takes. But if it's getting things wrong or it's quite off base, then that's disappointing... I'll probably still see for myself though.
Eventually.

Is there a good, accurate video like this? I've gotten all 5 main endings and admit that I didn't understand 100% of everything.

What kind of jerk makes a 3 hour long YouTube video.

matthewmatosis makes decent videos at that length. But if your going to make a long video, you have to keep the basics of what your talking about right, and this guy atleast for this video didn't.

Yep, with that mindset Nier isn't an RPG either, or Drakengard for that matter.

There are a few essays. This is a good one if you ignore the weird rant about games as art at the start. It's not a play by play breakdown but it talks about the larger themes of the game and how is presented throughout the events of the game.

I kinda started skipping ahead when I had like 30 minutes left (yes I watched almost the whole thing), and some of the stuff he says at the end makes it seem like he didn't read the Machine Research Report?

There's a couple things I wanted to explain to him for misunderstanding, right away being a decent example "emotions are prohibited" but over all I thought it was a good essay. Videos like these are porn to me, I'm glad to see how much content on YouTube like this we are getting lately.

Yeah, I'm good. Too many misconceptions for three hours.

I do recommend folks come to the spoiler thread though.

I'm going to watch the original video first, but uh, he sounds pretty downtrodden due to responses on his initial critique.

God he sounds like he's trying not to cry. I hope people weren't being dicks, he put a lot of effort into the video, regardless of any errors he may have made in it.

Edit: Yeah he is really upset. He's on the verge near the end. He sounds super hard on himself for "wasting people's time" but I watched almost the whole thing and didn't feel it wasted my time, I just thought he was wrong about some things.

Was thinking the same thing. There seems to be a trend towards creating these "academic analysis of video game" videos, but at least get some plot points correct.

I'm just going to say, I like your videos MrCaption dude. Don't worry about one video that might have some flaws.

Is this a troll video or is the person uploading a followup breakdown video because people found some points to contest in a 3 hour analysis of Nier?

People generally mistake length and eloquence for insight and analysis in these video essays. Just because you can talk for hours about every plot beat in a game doesn't mean you're providing meaningful discussion. How do you spend this much time and get basic plot points wrong?

Compare to something like Joseph Anderson's Zelda video where he did a bunch of experiments with armor, damage, invulnerability frames and more, did the math, and actually showed his results. He recorded himself playing all 120 shrines and tabulated their contents. You gotta do research and take notes and then turn that into analysis if you want to do videos like this.

Yeah he's talking on his twitter about giving up the youtube gig, but I think that's an overreaction. He just made the mistake of trying to analyze a Yoko Taro game without being prepared to do so. Getting things wrong/arguing/debating/misunderstanding things just comes with the YT's special brand of misery. Look at the Spoiler thread. The game has been out a little over 2 months and people still are finding new things to discuss/debate.

He should stay away from the internet for a few hours to calm himself down, it's just a video.

I was worried this would happen and I sure as hell am not going to go through a three hour video. More power to him though at least he wrote some stuff about it. I'm glad people continue to analyze the game. I will stick to my own interpretations though even if they may not be 100% correct.

Yikes, that's pretty bad. Shame it turned out like this, his long form analysis of fallout 4 was rather stellar in my opinion.

Jesus guy calm down a bit lol. I know you probably spent tons of time doing this but you just have to take people's constructive criticism's to heart and just attempt to do better next time, no big deal.

It would probably make sense to cut down on the actual content you try to put into these videos. an hour is way more than enough with 20 minutes devoted to each topic, let alone 3

Like, I dunno. If you're gonna do a three-hour analysis is it really so mean to say you should have your shit straight? He's acting like this thread pulled him apart.

He did a 3 hour video for a game he didn't even understand properly? Oops

To be fair, Yoko Taro games are incredibly abstract. You need to do a lot of research to get a basic understanding of what's going on. And there's a lot of novelizations and plays and stuff that go far beyond the games.

I..... I honestly can't tell if he's joking or not. I thought the nier video was great.... If this is a joke it's so far I'm honestly worried either way.

Edit: I read the Twitter. Dude if your reading this people enjoyed the video. You are taking this way too hard. Like the thread wouldn't have been made if someone didn't like you enough to make it. People are critical but they aren't critical of you making content. Just take a deep breath, avoid the internet for a bit and just breathe man. I was a subscriber before this I am after just calm down.

Also in an essay like this I don't expect you to have something fully right. I liked the video because it was your take on the game. Even if I disagreed or knew something you said was wrong story wise it didn't ruin the video. It still has value showing what someone's personal misread of the story is.

Sorry for posting so long directly to the guy but like this is a weird situation for a thread that didn't make it to page 2.

Well he did edit the video down to 3 hours plus who knows all the time he spent writing that script, recording and whatever issues may have happened during the recording of it. Probably seeing mistakes and misinformation he gave being pointed out on what might have been something he did with passion discouraged him a bit. I can see why he might feel bad cause he wanted to do the best video for it. He shouldn't feel bad because there is plenty of good in the video and sure he could have done the video clearing out his faults after gathering his stuff together and cool down a bit. He did work too much on that video and he is probably exhausted.

If you read this here MisterCaption. Don't feel bad about the mistakes you made in the original video. Those things can happen and you can clear up things. You got a lot of people pointing out things for you and they are showing you stuff and for most of the part seems to be feedback and corrections. You're good man and keep doing your thing. Hope this stuff didnt sour your experience on the game and on the future content you plan doing.
