Nikkei: Sony tops worldwide console sales for first time since 2006

Including handhelds in this?

"Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) sold 18.7 million PlayStation 4 (PS4) systems and other game consoles for the fiscal year to March, the Nikkei business daily said, to Nintendo's 16.31 million units.

The release of the PS4 in the United States and other markets in November propelled Sony's fortunes after a disappointing response to the console's predecessor, the PS3.

Almost seven million PS4's were sold, but Sony's overall sales of hardware, including the portable PlayStation Vita, still fell some 20 percent for the fiscal year, the report said."

Be interesting to see if they can stay on top of Nintendo for the next fiscal year. PS4 is doing well but PS3 is dead in the water at this point, as well as Vita.

Since what we now know as Final Fantasy XV was first reported to be in development, Sony was on top of the world, fell prey to Riiiiidge Racer and 599 US Dollars, and reclaimed the top spot again.

What a whirlwind.

Nintendo is in big trouble, 3DS sales are falling, Wii U isn't catching up, they will not be on top again anytime soon, if ever.

You think they sold +16M Wii's and Wiius?

Such a shift in opposing directions. Nintendo lost all momentum it had from the WiiDS era. Sony came back from the 599 fiasco to dominance.

Well 3DS is also doing worse than last year and while WiiU may get a boost this year I don't think it will be huge.

Yeah, that is why I said it should be interesting. Sony could significantly cut PS3 price, Nintendo could introduce a new 3DS model or something or straight price cut. We don't really know Nintendo's holiday lineup yet either for 3DS besides Pokemon and that Smash will be out.

Maybe in the 1st world countries. There is 80% of the world to be served.

The PS3 is still on track and possible new model with price cuts and prime-gen as well as the cross-gen development will keep it relevant to at least 2016/17.

200$/euro PS3 should make wonders.

Yeah the PS3 has not seen a real price cut in awhile now.

I'm honestly just surprised they were in front in 2006. With the GBA and Gamecube still existant, the DS powering up and the Wii launching to record numbers, you'd think Nintendo led that year.

All depends if Sony can further reduce PS3 hardware cost. They might already profit more on every PS4 sold at this point than every PS3. In which case they might rather wash their hands of the PS3 and get people on board with PS4. PS4 has way more potential for hardware profitability long term.

I agree, though it's most likely Nintendo's fault for not further supporting the Wii since 2011 & for not preparing themselves properly with both 3DS & Wii U (higher price tags, bad marketing, etc).

Wii was supply constrained and 2006 was still a decent year for the PS2. Guitar Hero was still in swing back then.

Again. 1st World is not Rest of the World. And SCE PAL covers 80% of the countries (by total population) that are not 1st World.

400$/euro is not much in the 1st World, but in the rest of the world it is someoone's monthly pay, even more.

There are millions of people that still do not have PS3. 200$/euro model would serve them for forthcoming years. Even if Sony does not make 1$/euro in profits on consoles, they will reach for the audience, sell games and do PSPlus tie-ins.

PS3 will stay relevant for years from now.

Sony tend to manufacture for their gaming platforms for a long time. PS1/PS2/PSP have a long manufacturing life.

PS3 already has a $200 model and it isn't selling. This isn't the PS2. Blu Ray isn't DVD. This console has been available for nearly 8 years. 80% of the world as you put it has had access to buying a PS3 for years, it's not some new product to the rest of the world. That is like saying launching Xbone and PS4 in China is some mystical game changer, when in reality people in China can get one whenever they want, likely cheaper than buying in their own country.

And the point of my post is that PS3 hardware is costly, hence the reason for no price cut in years.

Dat PS2. Also, PSP. And the Gamecube was dead on the market in 2006.

PS3 has a $200 model in the territories that he's talking about? Or in the US?

They shifted in the same direction, they're both down YoY. It's just that Nintendo lost more. I don't think either company can be truly happy with those results.

Be interesting to see if they can stay on top of Nintendo for the next fiscal year. PS4 is doing well but PS3 is dead in the water at this point, as well as Vita.
Sony still has to release (and in most cases also to announce) their main exclusive series in PS4 such as Gran Turismo, Uncharted, The Last of Us. It is also the case of other important multiplatform games that still have to debut in next gen.

Regarding Vita, the PS4+Vita bundles are coming, that will help to both sell Vitas and evangelize how great companion is Vita thanks to Remote Play, PS+, crossbuy and in the future PSNow.

So it's more likely to see next year a bigger difference between Sony and Nintendo, specially considering that key 3rd parties like EA or Ubi stopped supporting Nintendo.

Sony sold 18.7 millions and maximum 7 of them are PS4. So PS3 and Vita are that not dead. Unlike Wii or Xbox 360, the PS3 will be in the market for at least 2 or 3 of years more.
