Its also just occurred that this is really it. This is the answer to all that insane pre-Wii hype. This is Holograms as a reality :lol

Whether you perceive Holograms as something that needs to be projected outwards onto another surface or not, the term 'Hologram' has also been given to 3d trading cards/posters and such that do not require glasses and simulate depth.

So here we are. 2011, hologram games are here!

2012 hologram porn too soon ?

Sega, 1991. Time Traveller. holograms all up in this bitch!

I played this in the arcade a couple times. Thought the game was shit but it looked so cool. I also remember it being around a dollar per play.

I guess I should comment at some point.. hope they keep in at least one of the cameras of the DSi. I like that functionality.

Or backwards, if this thing gives me a migrane....

I'll probably still play it, while slowly going blind...

Hence, the "if". There's no guarantee this will be "properly implemented". We won't know till E3.

"...during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses."

They even bolded it on their PR.

I'm referring to the fact that Durante is convinced it isn't "real 3D" but rather some trickery akin to that DSiWare game.

480p on a 4" screen would have a higher pixel density then a 17 inch 1080p monitor (I think, anyone want to correct me here?)
Autostereoscopic would double the pixels for the same resolution as well, making density even higher.
That said, I kinda expect resolution spec will be "X". where actual stereo resolution displayed will be "X/2".

NOT official but nikkei says
- analog stick
- vibration pack
- tilt sensor under decision
- wireless connection speed up
- battery life up
- smaller than 4" screen

Well, since it's BC with the DSi, they'll have to keep at least one.

Hope it's entirely new updated hardware tech inside, with DS hardware inside for the BC.

Sounds like it will be, but you just made me think about how they'll probably have to keep stuffing the old DS wireless chip inside for years, just like they did with the DSi :lol

Hopefully they had enough foresight when designing the DSi to let the 3DS and DSi use the same chip.

Yes, but the DS already peaked in both sales and software.
It's taken multiple revisions to keep it afloat.
There's really no major software (aside from a few like Golden Sun and DQ9 in NA) left to release.

ah ok, maybe this will come with a DS price cut announcment too. $99 will keep it selling like hot cakes.

Cut the crap. While selig is being an idiot, there are legitimate reasons for not liking how 3D is currently being implemented in televisions, such as the need for glasses. If the 3DS is actually 3D without the requirement of glasses, this is a huge step forward.

This.

Also Wi-fi needs to be up to date with alle the necessary security stuff. It's still such a hassle to go online because no game actually supports the DSi Wi-fi stuff.

What kind of 3D effect can a small, mobile display produce? It's barely convincing even on a 50" plasma.
I posted this on like the 12th page but... I believe James Cameron talked about how he saw 3D displays that were small (laptop or even smaller size) and how they looked even more convincing, probably because you could usually hold it much nearer than when you watch a movie.

- 3D Stick - awesome
- vibration pack - hmm, not sure if want
- tilt sensor under decision, it's gotta be included, man. tilt controls rock
- wireless connection speed up. finally
- battery life up. yay
- smaller than 4" screen. makes sense

I haven't seen anyone comment about the video up at 1up.com showing the 3d background, is that actually from Nintendo?

It's been talked about a lot in this thread and it's just a DSi Ware game from a small company.

I would have held off on even hinting at this until well after the DSi XL launched.

Probably won't matter since this is probably the same hardware but with 3D screens. And the look of the 3D probably won't appeal to everyone.

Edit: Uh, ok, nevermind...saw the nekkei stuff.

It's not crap. The effect on games is exactly the same. The only difference is in the requirements to use it. Anyway, in my experience (actually, you know, playing games in 3D) a larger screen size makes the effect far more impressive. This makes me wonder how significant actual stereoscopic 3D on a handheld would really be.

i see you're back to the pessimistic viewpoint. :D
I am. Let's call it Nintendo-wariness. (I was extremely enthusiastic about Wii until it was clear that it's a slightly overclocked Gamecube)

hey, E3 will make fools of half the people in this thread, one way or another.
The nice thing is, if I'm right I can say I called it first, and if I'm wrong I still win because I love 3D.

yeah which renders the wi-fi implementations in most games useless unless you are using WEP :/

Was thinking about getting a DS at some point for Advanced Wars and the new Golden Sun, but the fact that this new one has backwards compatibility will definitely make me consider holding off.

On the radio? Haven't read anything about this in the mainstream media. Do you live in Japan?

How reliable is the nikkei source?

Now the bolded (it still being under decision and not certain) would actually jive with stereoscopic 3D, since that would greatly reduce the utility of motion/tilt sensing due to limited viewing angles.

And just after I had decided not to believe!

Everytime Nintendo always seem to surprise me. I always thought their next handheld would be more poweful with multi-touch. It is a good idea to have 3D, this gives them a 1UP against IPhone.

I just hope we also get
Dual analog sticks
D-Pad
Multitouch screen
GameCube level graphics
Virual Console support (with added Gameboy library)

- 3D Stick <- great
- vibration pack <- great
- tilt sensor under decision <- cant wait for marble madness 3d
- wireless connection speed up <- great
- battery life up <- great
- smaller than 4" screen <- it says its a bit smaller then the ds xl so thats ok i guess

as i said earlier, its confounding what they continue to do. Very few on GAF would have expected this, since all the 3-D games focus was directed at home consoles, and the 3D HDTVs

This can be an April's Fools joke. It is seriously out of character for Nintendo to announce something like this way a year before it is released. Plus they are weary of competitors *coughs sony* stealing their ideas.

I'm skeptical.

WTF is a 3D stick?

Analog stick or maybe some insane headtrack (fingertrack) technology. Kinda like what Nintendo tried to do with the first DS games with them saying that the touch screen could function just as a good as a analog stick.

Yes, of course Nintendo would sent out a press release, publish it in English and Japanese, on their own website, and call it an Aprils Fools joke, a god damn week away from April 1st. Sure, that makes a ton of sense...

What a shock to wake up to. Sounds like my Summer 2011 prediction was close.

Very surprised about 3D but it's interesting that this actually goes back to old rumors from 2004 about the original DS having a 3D screen. At the time the technology was to have two layered screens which had different viewing angles. Since a portable is always viewed straight on by the player you can predict where the eyes are and project different images to each one. It could be that or some newer technology.

I'm also guessing only one screen will be 3D.

And the requirements, you don't seem to get through your thick skull, are entirely the problem.

Requiring glasses is clumsy, irritating and silly, especially if a person already wears glasses.

I like the idea of 3D. I do not like current implementation.

really? like the original DS announcement before E3? or the Wii remote reveal or the Wii name reveal?

it's no April Fool's joke. it's done. The PR is real.
