Just for clarification for a few people

er·go·nom·ics
The applied science of equipment design, as for the workplace, intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort.

If it's comfortable to hold it's ergonomic it doesn't matter how wonky it looks.

The marketing imagery does suck that its targeted for kids but they are showing adults, but looking at that comparison picture its not any bigger then the original 3DS and I know that my kids have no problem with something that size. Hell they are fine playing with a WiiU gamepad.

Ummmm, you know that you only handle the bottom half of a normal 3DS yes?

Look at the distance from d-pad/buttons to the touch screen on the OG 3DS. Then notice the distance from d-pad/analog stick to the shoulder button.

Then go and really look at the 2DS. those distances are MUCH longer, which is bizarre as the "target market" is children under 7.

OMG Nintendo what is this thing lol. Its a GREAT move to release a 3DS without the 3D for kids and others who dont want to pay for that stuff, but why this form-factor???

Am I the only one who feels the circle pad and buttons being on the same level as the top screen is an awful design choice? Looks so damn uncomfortable.
Yeah it should have been ap the bottom of the d pad...

Do we have official specs and dimension?

It is like a tablet almost... kinda neat. Not sure if I like the form exactly as is. I wonder how much it weighs. I might be willing to trade in my dsi for this. I probably wouldn't get much for the dsi tho. I never got the 3ds because I wasn't a fan of the 3d and price.

The 2DS looks cute. It looks like it was designed for young kids who might break a clamshell 3DS and shouldn't look at stereoscopic 3D anyway.

This looks like something my grandma would have gotten me for Christmas in 1987 for $5 from a drug store after hearing I liked video games.

I was hoping for a cliche 3ds mobile fusion slider design, top screen would be touch in mobile mode. It would go into game mode automatcally when slid open.

Seems silly now but I'd bet this lets them get to $99 or less within 12 months which is worth quite a bit to them.

Jim.
just showed my mate at work this: his reaction "niiiiiiiice"

told him it was for kids and in 2D first question was, will it play 3ds games, but yeah he liked the idea of it and the price, think he will get it for his little ones, also he was pleased about the pokemon/2ds release day

I'm thinking about how unlogic the part in Zelda where you need to
close your DS in order to copy a map from the upper screen to the lower
will be in this new model.

The idea of one without 3D functionality for a cheaper price point is a good idea on paper. I hardly turn on 3D myself. But I don't get why they made it so hideous, instead of sticking with a similar design of the other 2 versions. One of the ugliest portables I've ever seen.

I think a clam shell is far more kid friendly than anything else. It's not like Nintendo is putting gorilla glass on these screens...

It would eat into sales of the other two versions.

And the ugly form factor is probably cheaper to produce.

But why do they have grown ups playing it in another pic if its ONLY for kids like Nintendo fans here are saying?

Who the hell cares what they're saying? It is just a 3DS at a cheaper price making it more accessible for kids and adults alike who wanted a lower price-entry.

Guys, I'm sorry. I wrote last year that Nintendo should iterate their handheld hardware every year, and I've promoted that idea here on GAF in recent threads. Here's what I said in July of last year...

Apparently I didn't realize the influence I had, and now this has happened.

I promise that I'll be more careful with my suggestions in the future.

(In all seriousness, I expected them to build a premium model and push the lower models down. I'm interested to see how real consumers react to the opportunity to buy a 2DS. I'm absolutely horrified at the prospects of how they will market software for this... the stores will have 3DS and 2DS branding? *shudder* Seems like the NDS to 3DS problem all over again, just like the Wii to Wii U...)

They've been averaging new handheld hardware every 1.4 years since the GBA launched, you have nothing to apologise for.

I wake up to this. Woah. Is this the real life?

Seriously now, I know that there were health concerns giving 3D to kids, but this form factor is only attractable to kids.

Also, this needs to be bundled with Pokemon. Get people to buy it for their kids, and then you won't have to worry about any game not working on their systems. I also notice that the main consoles I see in marketing materials are colored Red and Blue, probably just for X and Y.

That puzzle in Phantom Hourglass where you have to close the DS..

Oh my god, that's right, they need a sleep button at least.

I actually prefer the sleep button as opposed to closing the system.

It kinda looks like a PokéDex...

For games that switch between buttons and the touch screen, this is going to have ergonomic problems, absolutely. For everything else, I think it looks fine.

Getting rid of the 3D is dumb from a brand perspective more than a product one, just because I wonder if 2DS will cause confusion with the masses such as wondering if games labeled "only for 3DS" will work on the 2DS. The worst thing about this though is definitely the design more than the lack of 3D. It looks cheap and the fact that the triggers are on the edges of the top screen makes me wonder how comfortable it will be to hold.

"You know this is for kids, right?"

That response means nothing. Are you saying kids don't deserve a well designed product? It looks like it was DESIGNED by a kid.

Kids have different tastes than neckbeards.

Neckbeards like shiny black powerful hardware that masks the facts that video game machines are essentially toys.

Kids like toys.

Ive already seen a few people off of gaf say like it was a fact that this wont be able to play 3DS games because its a different console.
I hope Nintendo doesnt have another Wii U situation on their hands with the name

Except that, and I'm speaking for myself here, have encountered several experiences directly with people that are greatly confused by the DS/3DS naming as well as the Wii/Wii U naming. It's almost like I'm talking Chinese when describing the differences between the DS and 3DS. Most assume they can play 3DS games on the DS, it just won't have 3D. Even after explaining things in several different ways, most just nod and agree even though I'm certain they still don't get it.

people will do that for every console handheld device it even happens with tablets and phones as well as pc's. stupid people will always exist.

kids are playing with 10 inch ipads at 5 years old. surely they can use this. look at the photos of those kids, once you see them holding it, it looks fine.

Nintendo could release a 3DS : Teething Edition, and you'd still have a bunch of adult fans buying it.

My first thought - is this april fools?

My next thought - $129? This will sell a shitload.

My last thought - If there is a 3D-less 3DS, maybe a gamepad-less WiiU is next.
