Nintendo crosses 800 million consoles sold, No. 1 console maker in the World

As reported in the Nintendo’s latest Financial Report as June 2021 Nintendo have sold in total 800.84 million consoles worldwide since 1983*.
Nintendo is, by a wide margin, the console manufacturer which has sold the most consoles in the World.

Total number of videogame consoles sold by manufacturer as June 2021 (only console makers which have sold at least 30 million units):
tGWM3wY.jpg

A curiosity:
As March 1995 (PS1 was launched in December 1994 in Japan) NES + GB + SNES had sold in total 141.49 million units therefore since the introduction of the PlayStation brand of consoles Nintendo has sold around 95 million consoles more than what Sony did in the same timeframe.

* Note:
I considered only the stand alone consoles with interchangeable software (no Color TV Game, no Game & Watch, no Nintendo plug & play retro consoles, no PlayStation Classic, no PocketStation, no add-ons in general).

Switch is bullying the Wii at this point launch alligned.

People who were thinking it would drop off like the Wii were sorely mistaken.

Atari should be higher and Sega should be lower.

Also not surprising with how many portable systems and iterations Nintendo put out. Most of their systems sold are portable, as well as most of their third party support.

Not really. Nintendo handhelds are always successful. That's why the Switch is a Hybrid but more of a handheld than home console.

Switch : 89.04M LTD (30/06/21)

Hardware Q1 - 4.45M (-21.7% YoY)

SonyGaf strikes again, as we are not allowed to have a thread celebrating the fact Nintendo have sold lots of consoles, and if they do it's usually down to people buying rubbish or the pandemic, of course if we have a thread that says the PS5 has sold 10 million consoled that's all down to demand.

Also your comment about the decline has not context, the main reason the Nintendo Switch has sold less in the first quarter 2021 than it did in 2020 was Animal crossing, this game should have been released in Dec 2019 but was pushed back to 2020 thus inflating the sales figures in 2020, traditionally Nintendo sells it's most hardware over the Christmas holiday period. This year will be boosted by the Pokemon remakes, and 2022 will have Pokemon legends, and of course you have the new OLED model out in October, but please feel free to suggest the Switch sales slump mantra if it makes you feel any better. ;)

Very impressive sales for those first party Nintendo titles, obviously the top two are just insane, but for me the sales of Super Mario Odyssey are the most impressive, as when did a Mario 3-D game reach those type of Numbers.

Not being a warrior at all, just pointing out it's easy to post facts and figures with no context to them, and many on this site do not like any sort of Nintendo success, may not sit well with people, but it's pretty obvious on a lot of Nintendo sales threads, where there are many comments suggesting it's down to luck or other factors.

Yet you get a positive thread about a Sony console performing well, or their annual sales report, and it's high fives all round, and fully expected and deserved. ;)

What did you expect? GAF is like 70% Sony. 20% Nintendo and 10% Xbox when it comes to consoles. When i saw this topic i instantly knew we will some have donwplaying and Sony praising on page 1. You have to accept this if you are here.

Yea, Nintendo has put out a lot of consoles over nearly four decades with only two clear stinkers in my opinion (Virtual Boy and Wii U). I think it's also impressive that Sony is so close considering they got into the game about seventeen years later - though they enjoyed a changing consumer base of gamers that began growing at astronomical rates in the 2000's and more and more consisted of young adults with disposable income. Nintendo, on the other hand, spent a good fifteen years selling mostly to children, the earliest years of which were to a smaller group of families capable of affording a large purchase like that.

SonyGaf strikes again...

Because of a post of a user, who might or might not be Sony aligned, where he posts (I assume correct) data, without comparisons to other consoles, without his personal takes on it, it's SonyGAF.

Yet you mostly find praise in this thread and if Sony is mentioned, then to praise both.

Guys you should really start to brush this paranoia off, it's not healthy.

I am totally aware of what it's like on here, just like to call them out on it once in a while.

You can't underestimate Sony's impact on the video gaming scene, it pretty much made Nintendo go in a totally different direction, even more when Microsoft entered the fray.

A game system selling 5+ million units during the April-June quarter will probably never happen ever again. Outside of the Switch last year, only the NDS and Wii has ever accomplished that feat.

As a point of comparison, here is what the PS4 sold during each FYQ1:

> FY2014 Q1: 2.8 million units of hardware
> FY2015 Q1: 2.9 million units of hardware
> FY2016 Q1: 3.5 million units of hardware
> FY2017 Q1: 3.3 million units of hardware
> FY2018 Q1: 3.2 million units of hardware
> FY2019 Q1: 3.2 million units of hardware
> FY2020 Q1: 1.9 million units of hardware
> FY2021 Q1: 0.5 million units of hardware

And here is PS5:
> FY2021 Q1: 2.3 million units of hardware

People suggesting Nintendo had a bad quarter but they still sold 4.5 million consoles, if that's bad I would still take it an run a mile.
