Nintendo Digital Downloads - April 2009 (VC/WiiWare/DSiWare)

digidownloads_april2-1.jpg

This is a new combined monthly thread for all digital downloads on Wii and DSi. The OP will list the new releases each week over the month in all three main territories, but will also include notes on updated ratings, new game announcements and other news pertaining to the services. This is a work-in-progress, and any contributions or corrections for the OP would be most welcome.

Do you not already have a big giant thread for all this?

There have been two so far.

The first was Kobun's launch VC thread that was never updated and eventually sprawled out and died after months of use, whinging and stupid thread renames. The second was the one below (or above) this one which has also sprawled out and has an OP that is no longer updated (as the OP is now banned).

There was some brief discussion about a weekly or monthly thread in the style of the PAL charts, Media Create and monthly boxart threads and this is just me taking a punt to see if it will be adopted.

If everyone prefers to have a megathread for discussion and no updated OP, then the other one will prosper and this will die (assuming a mod doesn't make that decision first!)

IMO, a regular - and regularly updated - news and update thread that can be rebooted every month (and can be carried on by someone else) is preferable, but if it isn't wanted we'll soon find out.

I am going to be honest..... I appreciate the effort you've put into this, but the format is REALLY hard to navigate. IF you are REALLY up for doing this I would strongly consider what the PSN thread does with just breaking out the regions and then separating the releases inside there by categories.. as an american I really don't care what EU and JPN got, and on the Wii this is even MORE true as we have no way of buying releases from foreign stores.

I'd second this one. Group by region then by platform.

Point taken.

As I said, this was a first pass and any input like this will help to make the format better. I'll put together something based on your suggestion and try and post an update ASAP.

CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 screens, plus download details

Product Mini Profile

Crystal Defenders R2
in: RTS (Wii)
links »

Square Enix has announced the upcoming release of CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 and R2 on the Nintendo Wii. R1 will be downloadable via WiiWare some time in April, while a date for R2 has yet to be determined.

For those who aren't familiar with the games, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS borrows heavily from the FINAL FANTASY TACTICS series, including much of the latter's jobs and locations. Both games also feature similar strategic gameplay. The WiiWare version of CRYSTAL DEFENDERS comes with a few improvements to the interface and a new design "optimized for consoles." Expect a number of other new features as well, like the global ranking system and leaderboards.

“The release of these two CRYSTAL DEFENDERS titles on WiiWare demonstrates Square Enix’s commitment to providing new downloadable content, meeting the needs of its customers," comments John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer at Square Enix. "CRYSTAL DEFENDERS combines easy pick-up and play mechanics, great depth and an addictive quality that make it ideal for the platform. I hope that many people experience and enjoy it.”

That's interesting to hear about Crystal Defenders.

When I saw it borrows heavily from Final Fantasy Tactics, I got a little excited. But then realized it's probably more likely from Nintendo's FFT games, unfortunately not the original one on the PS1.

Right, a quick rejigging of the OP to put releases in region groupings and add the stuff above. It's obviously a bit quick and dirty but is this perhaps a better way of organising content?

Is that Crystal Defenders announcement for the US? I can't imagine it being for Europe as well, that would mean 4 SE games in 2 months (Publishers only have a 1 WiiWare game per month limit).

It is a Tower Defense Game, honestly I would recommend it on the XBLA since that version has the complete package in one download.

Actually it comes from Europe; here is the full PR.

Square-Enix announces two Crystal Defenders titles for WiiWare

London (3rd April 2009) – Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces the release of two downloadable titles for WiiWare™. The first of these defensive simulation games, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS™ R1 will be available for download in April, while a release date for CRYSTAL DEFENDERS™ R2 will be announced at a later stage.

Featuring jobs and locations from the popular FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS requires players to strategically deploy units to fend off encroaching enemy hordes and prevent them from stealing their party’s crystals.

The WiiWare version includes several improvements to the interface and a new design optimized for consoles. A worldwide ranking system allows players to upload their scores to leaderboards and see how they stack up against other players around the globe. These and other new features are sure to increase excitement and enhance replayability.

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “The release of these two CRYSTAL DEFENDERS titles on WiiWare demonstrates Square Enix’s commitment to providing new downloadable content, meeting the needs of its customers. CRYSTAL DEFENDERS combines easy pick-up and play mechanics, great depth and an addictive quality that make it ideal for the platform. I hope that many people experience and enjoy it.”

About CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1

Story
In a land ruled by might and magick, peace is ensured by the benevolent power of the crystals. When a young moogle charged with guarding these crystals learns of an evil presence gathering on the horizon, he calls upon heroes from the far corners of the realm to join forces and stand against this new threat.

Wielders of blade and bow, keepers of arts arcane, unite! As darkness draws nigh, only you can protect the light that binds us. The fate of Ivalice lies in the hands of…the Crystal Defenders!

Features
CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is a defensive simulation game in which players deploy characters from the FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series onto a variety of different maps to battle wave after wave of encroaching monsters. The first game in the series, Crystal Guardians, was released in Japan for mobile phones in January 2008. In December of the same year, iPhone 3G, iPod touch and iPod versions were released under the new name, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS. To date, the total number of downloads for the series have reached over 800,000.

CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is simple and easy to learn – monsters will enter an area and march through it until they are defeated or reach an exit, at which time they will steal one or more crystals. It is up to the player to decide – by pausing the action at crucial moments – when and where to deploy various jobs such as Black Mages or Soldiers that will attempt to defend the party’s crystals. Factors such as map terrain, monster strengths and weaknesses, job attributes, and more will play a crucial role in determining what steps a player should take.

Honestly there's no real difference. Sure, the XBLA version has more content, but this is the kind of game where that really doesn't mean a whole lot. I would have been satisfied with W1 if I didn't have W2 or W3. That might be because it's hard as fucking nails and anything past W1 doesn't last long anyway.

Also it uses the FFTA(Unsure which) sprites, that's all it means. Fighters and Time Mages and Black Mages and summons and such. It's nothing like the actual FFT games.

Err, not sure why they changed the name to R1/R2/R3 instead of W1... Might be different.

Probably due to the WiiWare specific additions. Crystal Defenders uses Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Sprites.

I'm wondering how we'd go about adding in the Japanese announcements. For example Namco has a huge list of arcade games that it has pledged:

http://www.bandainamcogames.co.jp/cs/download/virtual_consolearcade/

Assault
Return of Ishtar (also announced for US, GDC)
Emeraldia (also announced for US, GDC)
Galaga '88
Genpei Toma Den
Cosmo Gang the Video
Cyber Sled
Sky Kid
StarBlade
Splatterhouse
Xevious
Solvalou (also announced for US, GDC)
Dragon Spirit
Dragon Sabre
Dragon Buster
Knuckle Heads
Numan Athletics
Burning Force
Pac-Mania
Finest Hour
Phelios
Hopping Mappy
Marvel Land
Rolling Thunder
Shadow Land (Youkai Douchuuki)
Wonder Momo

Not all of those will necessarily release in Europe and the US because they are strictly Japanese arcade games and would need to be released as imports but it seems relevant to list info like this. Also, the stuff still listed from the Japanese Virtual Console site. Do you just take that raw list and comb out the stuff that would need to be imports or what?

oh ok, I just figured you'd have noticed the near week long discussion about templates and crap in the vc/wiiware thread (since you seem to pop in there regularly). I'm just glad that's over with.

Actually I don't follow the WiiWare like I do the XBLA or even the PSN, time constraints and all that.

Why can't we just use the (second) big thread? Branching these off every month is a completely needless waste of time.

Because I don't want to have to wade through pointless shit to see what has been released in my region on a Friday morning, as I'm sure many others would rather see it go that way as well for their own respective areas.

The 2nd VC thread started off with a NYE firework display that fizzled out without a month having passed. At least this way there is some semblance of structure and I'll get to see what was released in one post.

Would it be a nice suggestion to add a link to videos for the release?

There's always those website that are having videos of the VC and Wiiware stuff uploaded super fast...

Monthly threads are the way to go, I think, particularly with every user's seeming desire to get themselves banned at the least opportune times.

Taken on board, although the website that I can think of that most often posts vids is banned! I've added one for Majora's Mask and I'll try to continue adding as we go along.

Further tweaks to the OP as I try to knock it in to shape. I'd like to get the basic format correct before adding any bells and whistles (I think perhaps a simple banner image, but I'd be against adding any more images simply because it makes it a bitch to maintain and runs counter to the idea of it being an easily updated template that is clear for readers).

Why remove the links to individual ratings? Some entries will invariably disappear, and will need to be trimmed from the list.

My apologies - when I cut and pasted I changed the formatting and lost the links. Give me a wee while and I'll tidy that section up with your original post. I'll add in the links to the other ESRB ratings as well, and I would do the same for PEGI but their ratings search doesn't seem to generate individual pages.

Anyone know why Majora's Mask is 200 points more in Japan? Was it never released there for some reason?

On another note, I like the thread Cosmonaut and after a few variations it will probably get better and better. It would definitely be a lot easier to just look at the OP for new releases then looking for whatever page the press release is on in the megathread. Now we just need a banner here. :D

Not really sure, although a precedent was set by both Ocarina of Time (1200pts in Japan) and Smash Bros. (1200pts in Japan).

Unless there was major work needed to bring these up to date - perhaps there were changes needed for the Japanese versions that had already been made in their original US and European cartridge releases? - I assume this is just some kind of "blockbuster title" premium.

I don't know why Smash is 1200, but japan has a "RPG tax". N64 is 200 points more and all other systems are 100 points more.

Uncharted Waters: New Horizons is one of the best RPGs on the SNES. If you want a unique RPG it's totally worth the 800 points!

"Brain Age Express: Math (Nintendo | 200pts) "

it's actually 800 points

D'oh! I was actually getting excited, as I'd probably buy it at 200 points but not at 800 points. :lol

Thanks for taking the plunge on the thread, Cosmonaut X! :D

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

800 points is almost half the MSRP on Brain Age 1 or 2. A few of the games from the main game repackaged as a separate download for half the price doesn't seem worth it to me. For 200 points, it'd be a great deal, though. :)

Edit:
Cosmonaut X,
Can you move the U.S., Japan, and Europe listings to be before the Press Release section? Those are probably the main sections that people would be looking for, so those should probably be first.
