I just watched it. Wow, that hipster segment demoing the social functions was really tough and uncomfortable to witness. I hope they really go into detail to explain how their online system is going to work tomorrow because it does look interesting and seems fresh.

That was pretty neat, I guess. I had my expectations set pretty low, but I was really hoping they'd clarify past WiiWare and Virtual Console purchases transferring over to the new system. That, right now, is the biggest question I have in mind right now. I really hope that gets addressed in the next few days.

The Miiverse thing seems really interesting and it seems like it has a lot of potential, but again, I'm still left with a lot of questions about it. It definitely seems competent in the face of things like Xbox Live and PSN.

The best thing to come out of this was the GamePad as TV remote, honestly. I can't wait for this thing to be my pretty-much-always-on device.

I'm intrigued by the Zombie thing, I have to say that while it looks too complex to simply have been a mock up, it looks too simple to have been a real game, at least not one very far into development. They also seemed to be both intentionally not showing it at the same time as giving us enough to see. I don't know.

Also, NSMB's backgrounds look beautiful, as do the changes to the foreground. I remain hopeful that there will be some cool effects used in other levels, but I realise it's hard to judge from a 2 second tease.

Online functions seem interesting. I'm slightly concerned that people's ability to use their logical facilities seemed to be turned off during the Hipster Demo (perhaps people who didn't see the Joel McHale video), but I felt like it was pretty obvious what they were trying to do with it.

Cannot wait for Wednesday (JST) now - only 1.5 days to go!

My Miiverse plaza is gonna be sooooo empty when I get my Wii U :(
All systems out right now are locked with a 100 "friend" cap. It'd be interesting to see if Nintendo keeps that around, or blow it wide open (which would let people go nut in just randomly adding and filling up as much as they can)

I'm not even convinced that it was an actual game at all. Maybe just pre-rendered and they were faking it?

some weird oddly optimistic side of me is half convinced that Wii U as a concept is an absolute masterstroke by every definition

And here I was hoping they would update the Miis. Guess not.
Everything else looks great, though. Really glad there will be a social media platform.

But why go to the effort of pre-rendering something for a trailer like this? Why not just not cut to the TV at all? Especially something with button prompts. I'm not leaning one way or the other, I'm just perplexed.

I absolutely refused to even consider buying the wii u with that silly faux tablet controller

however, now after seeing the pro controller..

the wii u is now on my radar :)

if it's got the games, and depending on how powerful the system is amongst many other things..

it might be the first nintendo console I purchase since the NES! :)

Really digging that xbox controller clone... as the xbox controller is, what I believe, a perfect controller.

It conforms perfectly into the hands

good job nintendo :)

If they're smart they'll do a facebook / myspace / twitter / whatever import as an option to allow you to auto-add others with the console. I suspect they won't though.

now that would be awesome

Don't worry I'm sure there will be a Miiverse user list thread on GAF at launch day.

I'm not as popular as I'd love to be around here, so I'm sure a lot of you guys would be like.. "why would I add him?" lol
I'll keep an eye on that possibility tho

I don't think it will be widely open, but I'm sure 100 is a low number now since Nintendo is promoting social interactivity/connection really hard

They barely showed anything. What they did show was some random Zombie footage. Not really hard to get, or make.

Maybe it was because of the alcohol but I was grinning the entire 30 minutes. It all sounds awesome, and if they show great games on Tuesday I will definitely be on board

It wasn't comedy gold, but considering what we usually get from Nintendo Direct and Sony/Microsoft's equivalent, it was pretty good.

They weren't planning on showing any games, so they just put together whatever they could for that skit. From the screen captures, it looked pretty generic and bland.

And considering Non-specific Action Figure has already built up a huge fan following, I'd say the video was a success.

I love the Wii U, I love the sleek operating system, how connected everything is and the Dark Souls elements that Nintendo are bringing to every single game.

If it takes off, it'll be beautiful.

Edit - The acting was good, where are the non specific action figure memes at?

I don't get all the hate for the hipster segment. Sure it was cheesy, but it was intentionally cheesy and I thought kind of funny.

For all that the segment was cheesy, it DID actually do a good job of selling the concept of the Wii U's social features in a context that real players would recognize.

1. You're playing a game.

2. Become stuck or puzzled by something.

3. Run to a discussion thread about the game.

4. Ask a question in the thread or send a private message.

5. Wait for a reply or start an IM with someone.

6. Go back into the game and try the solution.

The scenario as it played out in the skit did try to jazz up the video chat angle, just to show off that concept for the pad controller. But aside from that, it was a pretty interesting look at how all those things could be accomplished while on the couch, using the same controller you're playing the game with, and jumping right back into the game seamlessly.

What's more, with all that stuff happening on an internal social network, it seems to invite the Facebook effect... everything is interrelated within the same universe, all persons, contacts, apps, games, and discussion. Very focused, no need to poke around the Internet or random forums trying to find what you're looking for and tie it all together.

So yeah, whether or not it works out, the actual concept Nintendo is pushing is anything but "weird" and it's not even silly. It has classic Nintendo packaging and stylization, which may be throwing some folks. But underneath that, I think what they've really done is, in fact, zeroed in on the social networking trends that are the most popular, and rather shrewdly tried to bring them all together under one roof.

i know they said that was the OS, but we do need more info on the Menu interface.

Details including the eShop (background download queues?), VC (transfers from Wii?), apps such as netflix or the rumored ebook readers...

if the mii plaza is the first thing you see.. how do you get to the store? how do I find the browser? where are the settings and save menus etc.

...i just wanted a full reveal. hopefully that is on Tuesday or in the hardware video later...

Some people are too serious, especially those calling the hipster segment really bad. It was obviously meant to be super corny and not serious. He was talking to an action figure than an old man he had randomly met online asking to be called grandpa! Why would you take anything other than the features being shown remotely serious?!

I had this idea... if this image is too big then I can just link to the image. It's not that funny but it's immediately what I thought of when seeing the social aspect. I'm also horrible at Photoshop... so sorry.

I think it was said in the video that the Mii Plaza is what is shown on the TV and there is a more traditional menu shown on the GamePad. Apparently they can be switched, but it sounds like that's how it will be when you first fire up the console.

As an actor, all I could see was a couple of struggling LA actors that got to work that day and seemed to have a pretty good time of it.

oh, lord i forgot about the second screen for a second :/ yeah they can functionally do two menus at once, social window on the gamepad and system menus on the screen. sounds like that would work.

You could see the Wii-like channels in the bottom right corner of the t.v. Guessing that's the button no?
