The Reuters article points out that Nintendo's market cap is now 81 Billion dollars. Holy shit!

Also, they are planning on pumping out 2.4 million Wii's per month soon.

That is 28.8 million per year. If they can do it soon I think they will sell that many. By the end of 2008 they will be somewhere between 40-50 million LTD.

NPD software will get interesting then...

First reception of the DS was very mediocre here in Germany, which is quite funny seeing how it's an absolute runaway success now.

no wonder they charged (and are still charging) 40 euros for DS games (bastards)

Yeah, although there's already "Software Pyramide" for DS. You can look it up here. All games are 20€, they have stuff like Sonic Rush, CV DoS.

You can get Wii and DS software online for cheap prices usually but in the shops it's a different story altogether. Most Wii games are at least 50€, a lot of them 60€. They pretty much match PS360 in that regard - mindblowing.

It's ridiculous how uninvested Nintendo is in the marketplace. They're almost archaic in their methods. If the whole of the electronics industry were to mysteriously crash tomorrow, Microsoft, Sony, and most consumer electronics companies you can think of will shrivel and die, while Nintendo will be like an unemployed adolescent of an old-money family -- living off the reserves for a long, long time.
Except that Microsoft is primarily a software company and they have much more in reserve than Nintendo can ever dream of just selling gaming hardware and software.

They didn't say which ones. Only that the number includes licensee (aka third party) games as well as Nintendo ones.

You forgot the part where MS's home console division is bleeding money out of every orifice.

Do we even have any solid numbers on how hard a loss they're taking with the 360?

Microsoft's position as a software giant means that they have less desire and need to invest in the 360. Further, they have financial obligations in many different sectors.

On the other hand, Nintendo's sole commitment is to their success in the video gaming industry. I would bet that their war chest is nearing, if not already surpassing, that of Microsoft's.

Actually, their present crumbling position is causing a scramble to diversify their revenue stream beyond Office and Windows.

And DS... take over PS2 in 2010? Before?

PS2 is still selling. So the DS won't pass it before 2010 if it does eventually pass it.

30M DS's sold this fiscal year will give it 100M units LTD by the end of March 09. Another 30M in the following year will put the DS LTD at 130M by the end of March 2010.

The PS2 hit the 120M shipment number last fall. There's no way that it won't be over 130M in two more years considering it is still selling pretty well everywhere except Japan.

I think the DS's final LTD numbers are still heavily reliant on how long Nintendo waits to release its next handheld. If the "DS2" isn't released until the end of 2010 or in 2011, I think that the DS will almost certainly overtake the PS2 to be the best selling videogame system ever. If Nintendo releases another handheld be the end of 2009, or in early 2010, than maybe not.

Holy Zeus, that's a helluva lot of profit. As others have mentioned, I'm happy to see the only pure game company in the race doing so well and expanding the market in the way that it is. It's nice to be able to talk to practically anyone about gaming and not seem completely out of touch, considering damn near everyone I know now owns a Wii and/or DS.

Also: There is something both haunting and damned cool about borrowing a game from your parents. If this hasn't happened to you yet, just wait. It's an interesting experience, particularly if your parents were like mine in yesteryears saying that gaming was a poor hobby.

You can see the list here

Not that the list is wrong, but the citations there are pretty silly. This site is a source for several of those third-party figures... which doesn't cite any of its own figures or give a date that it's true as of. It also only lists 21 games. It also includes Link's Crossbow Training which AFAIK is being counted everywhere, including internally, as an accessory rather than a game (Wii Play by contrast is being counted as a game)

Edit: I'd be inclined to go with jarrod's list there. He's got a good head on his shoulders.

Sure. I hope no one would actually argue this. Sony was actually successfully targeting this exact market before Nintendo in Europe with Buzz and Singstar. The difference now is:

a) The Wii actively markets to this audience.

b) The Wii comes set up out of the box for this audience to "get" the experience they want, and

c) The Wii has a cheaper total buy-in.

(Plus Guitar Hero and soon Rock Band are available on the Wii too now.)

I want DS2 to either have two touchscreens, two touchscreens that are so close to each other they appear to be one touchscreen, or one big touchscreen. Although, if it only had one big touchscreen, they couldn't call it "DS".

I also hope they ditch the dpad. DS shouldn't of had a dpad in the first place since it only slowed devs acceptance of trying new game ideas.

The best DS games were made after devs dropped the "Must do something with touch and dual screen" rule.

I'm not sure how it could be worked out but I would want the next 'DS' to have one big ass touch screen. It would be equal to 2 of the DS' touchscreens. Just eliminate that gap. Of course, something remotely in the vacinity of GCN hardware wise

MS got into the game because they feared the Playstation was gonna become the defacto set-top box of the future and cut them out of the game. Nintendo's direction this gen hardly threatens that. Whether that's stupid or not, who knows. But that's their motivation. That set-top boxes are gonna print money in the future and they want their stake in it.

Who, stole it from me :D

I remember putting that together say 2 years ago. It was a bit more in Sony's favor back then ;)

However, a cautionary note, is that converting to dollars is inherently a problematic operation as currency fluctuates greatly, not only on a daily basis, but certainly over a fiscal year's timeframe.

Nintendo sales up 73% for the year

Nintendo has reported its full year financial results, with a strong showing on the back of high sales figures, as expected.

The company saw sales jump 73 per cent across the fiscal year, while operating income was up 115.6 per cent and profit up 47.7 per cent.

Total sales therefore amounted to JPY 1.67 trillion (USD 16.1 billion), with profit hitting JPY 257 billion (USD 2.48 billion), fuelled by the sales of over 30 million Nintendo DS consoles, and almost 19 million Wii consoles.

DS titles Pokemon Diamond and Pearl shifted almost 10 million units between them, while the Brain Training titles hit almost 12 million. Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros Brawl featured highly on the Wii titles list.

But despite the strong results, the company has only forecast only a 7.6 per cent increase in sales for the next fiscal year, to JPY 1.8 trillion (USD 17.3 billion), with a 26.3 per cent rise to JPY 325 billion (USD 3.13 billion) in profits.

One of the key reasons for the modest forecast is down to overarching economic conditions, with a strengthening Yen expected to hit Nintendo's numbers in the next year, thanks to over 80 per cent of company income coming outside of Japan.

Nintendo still remains very conservative for the next fiscal year.

Mithos Yggdrasill said:

Of course, that 7.6% is in relation to this years insane sales level of 30M DS and 19M Wii's as well as the 26 million sellers. It still means they expect insane sales levels to climb a bit.

There are more Wiis available than any near-launch home console ever.

Wii passes GameCube worldwide.

Since last time, GBASP Americas hardware shipments apparently regressed by 0.01 million.

In a come-from-behind, the Americas now lead Japan in DS shipments by 0.01 million, too. Europe still leads, though.

More (tiny) GameCube shipments? This strikes me as odd. For the previous six quarters it was stuck at 4.02 million for Japan, but now it's at 4.04. For the previous five quarters it was stuck at 4.76 million for Europe, but now it's at 4.77. On the other hand, this is the first time there hasn't been an increase in the Americas.

Comparing Wii to PS2's early production shipments in individual territories...

Japan essentially a tie
Wii passes PS2 in NA, but it's still close
PS2 leads in Europe, but again it's really close

Really it's essentially a tie in every single one, though that it's "shipped to retailers" versus "production shipments" probably gives Wii the edge.

It's worth noting DS is probably about where the pre-Color Game Boy left off, though since they listed them combined it's hard to say where one ends. GB was at 64.42 million the March before Color launched, and 77.41 million the March after Color launched.
