Hype Nintendo is firing on all cylinders right now and it's great to see after the Wii U era

Was it though? Doesn't sound like Nintendo.
It was. Apple was only starting to pull away from the pack at that point and obviously Apple SoCs were unavailable.

It's been reported Nintendo got a "very good deal" on them, which DOES sound like Nintendo. Also, nVidia wanted to get back into the console market, so it was a good match.

I know nintendo sells a lot and they will probably sell a lot again. But that list is fucking lame for my tastes. Bau for Nintendo.

Wii "They are not in the competition" Era
WiiU "The opposite" Era

Currently we're in the Switch "They are not in the competition" era.

Tune in for the next one.

That was a much different game though. This is going to be a full 3D adventure along the lines of Mario. I think it might be the first one.

It would be great if we could get more examples of strong sales when they just put out a solid game that gets the job done with no gimmicks.

Might encourage them to do it more often. I'd love a Star Fox that sticks to the basics that blows open its sales expectations.

I honestly feel like I been conned by Nintnedo. Switch when it launched looked very appealing.

We had Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade 2, even Arms all back to back. Where they are AAA games with a large budget. Based on these games I thought everything will be AAA. A proper AAA Pokémon, Metroid Prime 4, even there AA games like Mario Party i thought would be feature packed, I thought Mario Golf will be a return of RPG mode etc.

Then reality kicked in. We haven't got a Metroid Prime 4 yet, still no new 3D Mario. Zelda sequel still not released. Pokémon looks lower budget than 15 year old JRPGs from PS2 era. And you can't even transfer all Pokémon. Mario Golf RPG mode was barebones. Mario Party had less content than the older games. No cool new AAA IPs since Arms. I felt like Nintendo came out with a initial good impression only to not followup with it. Instead we got more full priced Wii U ports, less feature packed games than previous entries. Long game draughts with indie games to make up for it that can be found cheaper on Steam. I'm so glad I'm getting a Steam Deck as I still love aying games portable. I'll still keep my Switch but it will be for exclusive games that rarely come out like the next Zelda.

Think the launch line up on Switch was more luck than anything. They were probably all supposed to come out on WiiU, but since that bombed.

i dont have a console preference and i usually wind up owning all three consoles by the end of the gen... but i just dont see anything on nintendo that i would be interested in as a 34 year old adult, or that i cant play on xbox or ps.

its families with children and people who have been life long fans of nintendo, or fans of a game you can only play on nintendo, that keep it running strong. the pokemon force is very strong lol, same with mario for sure (which includes racing and party games), so they have that keeping them going. and tbf, zelda breath of the wild is my favorite game of all time, so even i can understand the hype there and think its well deserved.

but outside of those three IPs, and having kids or just being an "all things nintendo" fan, i just cant agree with this rhetoric of nintendo "firing on all cylinders". its more like, they are pleasing their fans and maintaining a healthy and happy user base, but its nothing extraordinary or amazing for anyone outside of that cricle.

If Xbox and PS first party sales reach switch level they still won't be in competition. They're still competing over the third party sales. The Switch is not.
I'm not quite sure how your came to the conclusion that more software sold being third party is the thing that defines competition in the console space. If that were the case then all of the advertisement from Sony and Microsoft would be for third party games and they wouldn't be investing billions into first party studios and content to stand out in the market. The markets these products sell into and empirical evidence for how they sell them proves that your assessment is incorrect. They track on the same charts. It is universally agreed upon by the experts in these markets that these companies are in competition. They're in competition.

Competition happens at many levels. Devices that can play video games exist in a series of macro and micro economies that have finite pools of money available. Third party software sales is one of the microeconomic areas of the video game market where consoles compete, but it is not the primary one. The primary desire of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo is to extract as much money as possible from all of the markets they're in. There are consumers who will only buy one console every few years. If one of those consumers decides to buy a Switch that's money that Sony and Microsoft want but won't get. If someone is going to buy two consoles then these companies want to be one of the two. That's the main driver of competition.

The way they attract customers is to differentiate themselves in the market. None of these companies focus their primary advertising on Call of Duty or NBA 2K22 to differentiate themselves. Sony is pushing ray traced Miles Morales / Ratchet & Clank and hyping new Horizon/God of War/GT7. Microsoft is pushing Halo hype, Bethesda exclusives and unlimited access to all of the first party titles on Game Pass. Nintendo is pushing updated hardware, Animal Crossing updates, Metroid and Bayonetta. First party is where they primarily compete. But all of them also discuss third party content. There were things in the Nintendo Direct that were not exclusive to Switch just like there were things in Sony's State of Play that were not exclusive to PlayStation.

For some reason you seem to be taking the longest possible way around to say the Switch can't compete with the other consoles. I'm not sure why you feel the need to derail a hype thread to the point of getting nasty with people who don't buy your very narrow interpretation of how the market works. Can't you just let people be happy about what Nintendo is doing?

Should be pretty easy if you read through the whole thing. I've explained my pov countless times already

I didn't derail anything. Marty seemed to believe that the console that is selling the most by default has to be the main platform. I rebutted him. I didn't instigate anything beyond that.

Not everything is a derailment. A hype thread doesn't stop discussions or debates. Try to be a little bit less senstivie

We've seen a lot of Bamco games ported to the Switch after their release on other platforms. This seems to be especially true of Japanese focused games. That said, a few (like Ace Combat and Soul Caliber) were never ported, so it's definitely not a sure thing at all.

They aren't good at getting Namco RPGs on their platform. Code Vein, Scarlet Nexus, and Tales of Arise are essentially anti-Switch exclusives as they appear on everything BUT Switch.
When it comes to non AAA Japanese games, Bandai Namco Studios led by Harara is a clear exception in terms of Switch support.

You mentioned Bamco porting some games to Switch blacktout blacktout but it's not random which ones they pick. If we look at their Japanese developed output and the developer we see a clear pattern

Games on Switch

Jump Force - Spike Chunsoft
DragonBall Kakarot - CyberConnect 2
Captain Tsubada - Tamsoft
Digimon Survive - Witchcraft
Ni No Kuni 2 - Level 5
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 - Omega Force
Super Robot Wars T - B.B. Studio

Games not on Switch

Soul Calibur 5 -Bandai Namco Studios
Ace Combat 7 -Bandai Namco Studios
Scarlet Nexus - Bandai Namco Studios
Tales of Arise - Bandai Namco Studios
Code Vein - Bandai Namco Studios
Idolmaster: The Starlit Season - Bandai Namco Studios

Looking at this, it is unlikely that Arise gets ported to Switch. Not unless Bandai Namco Studios changes strategy.

Well , hyped for Dread and both Pokemon games, Kirby game not too sure, this ridiculous extra payment for retro game is kinda average, and of the only freakin thing were getting new in ACNH is coffee shop, im thinking about getting the OLED and sell my AC special edition.
And i want more GBA games. Castlevania is a start, and will Nintendo have the guts to release Metroid GBA games as buyable but not on a freakin rental service? It remain to be seen…

Hype yeah, but moderate tbh.

Actually it was claimed Switch was simply a secondary console and I said there is no evidence of that. It's impossible to prove a statement like that either way.

I just said there is more evidence that it's a primary platform considering there is more Switch hardware currently in sales circulation since it's release than any other console.

I told you that a best selling console does not need to be a main platform. You said that mathematically it does, and I gave you a mathematical example of why that clearly isn''t true

Leave it at that

I’m interested to see what happens with Advanced Wars 1 + 2 when the game releases. Those games dominated the Nintendo Power issues I had read for what felt like maybe two years. The editors seemed to always talk about Advanced Wars, fans and their drawings, etc.

My point was just that it had the highest mathematical probability of being so. It's something that's impossible to prove one way or the other unless we surveyed all console owners and asked what their main platform is. It seems it's just assumed that Switch is a secondary platform when there is nothing whatsoever to suggest this.

The Switch being the only platform that is predominantly a first party machine suggests that it is used as a secondary console

It's not a ridiculous assumption. Unless you think the majority of gamers spend the majority of their time playing Nintendo games compared to third party games

damn, I didn't want to come out and say this, but I'm glad someone did. 👍
I best you i‘m 38 :messenger_tears_of_joy: love nintendo and proudly sport a few nintendo tattoos :messenger_tears_of_joy: they will age well. Choices such a kid at heart making up for lost youth.

Age is nothing these days especially when you have gamers in their 90s playing Nintendo . we like what we like lifes to short.

I mainly like mario , donkey kong , turtles those got my addiction to Nintendo going I’d even like to see a wario land and a kid iccarus as they would be new to me.

i have the oled on preorder for my xmas but i was hoping for a new mario and possibly mario kart 9 for the holiday something to end the year on a good note.

I’m a little disappointed I can’t lie All i have this year to interest me is dread, i haven’t really played the other games in the franchise and although we don’t really need more ports it would be nice to have fusion and zero mission updates instead of n64
or sega on the online expansion

How they couldn’t just add them without the expansion gimmick is beyond me but i guess this is thew new mini console route .

To me it seemed like a no brainer after touting 19 years since a new motroid game and people crying out of a prime trilogy but it seems they dont like to take much notice of what fans would buy and just do thier own thing.

Then i have bowsers fury As i played 3d world to death in wiiu So I may just need to pick up mario maker 2 to scratch the itch.

Thankfully i have a backlog of games on ps5 to play so should be a light year on the wallet. I have still not started avengers i bought last xmas 😂 i will thier eventually.

Maybe next year we can live in hope but at this point I’m guessing no more new mario till next console.

I’m guessing kirby, zelda botw 2 and prime may end the switch cycle of aaa games I could be wrong.

Less than half of all Switch owners are Xbox and Playstation owners so for over half of Switch gamers, the platform is their main. Also, there is no way to prove what dual owners consider their main and spend the most time on. We don't have those statistics. If we look at the top 10 game sales in the major regions, Nintendo games are usually a sizable chunk of the list. In territories like Japan Switch is pretty much everyone's main.

Where are those stastics from? And do they also include PC?

Really stacked.

I’m interested in Dread but then it’s 2022 releases for me; Arceus and Splatoon 3 definitely. Maybe Triangle Strategy, BOTW 2 if it isn’t delayed.

I’d loved to have used the Switch as my primary and would have got the OLED if the joy cons weren’t a mess. Sadly I’ve not been able to use mine as a handheld.

Okay, just a US survey, and doesn't include PC, so 60% using the switch as a main platform is already a flawed assumption right there
The US is the strongest AAA game sale market in the world, if anything including territories like Japan would weaken your case significantly.

Even if there was 40% Switch only console gamers (which is being extremely generous because AAA gaming is far bigger on consoles) that would still mean only 11% more gamers would need to consider the Switch their main for the majority of Switch gamers to have it as their main.

There are so many great games to play. I have a backlog of games for the first time since 2005. Think I played like 8-12 actual Wii games and the rest were VC games and it wasn't that impressive to me due to the motion controls. But the Nintendo Switch has at least several dozen games that I'd love to play

Metroid Dread is Metroid 5 so the game is going to be huge. Was debating weeks ago on it, but I'm almost positive I'll be purchasing it on the day of its release. BOTW's sequel is going to be shattering records when it finally arrives. Might be 2022 or 2023 but that's the game that can potentially be the greatest game of all time. BOTW is magnificent despite straying very far from traditional Zelda gameplay. I honestly think the sequel to BOTW has the potential to become the greatest game of all time. If Eiji Aonuma is to seize his life goal and dream to bring to the world the definitive greatest Zelda game of all time, then this is the time and finest chance to do so I think. Everything is within reach now. Nintendo EPD is probably going to command the industry's attention a second time with this game

It's an advertisement for sadist people with a switch "play the worse version of these games on your switch" or some shit.
I guess it would be really dry if they were not there so choices , I just play them on other consoles i'm not bothered really about portable im. Graphics wh*** :messenger_grinning_smiling:

I don't take it outside and I don't play in bed lol I need al the sleep I can get lol but at least the choice is there.

if Nintendo had stronger hardware which I do not understand why the insist in not doing so £3o9 for a switch graphics as apposed to £450 for ps5 graphics how to the work out that pricing against the spec .

if it had stronger hardware internals I'm sure more people would choose third party on Nintendo and maybe just maybe steal some customers from the other consoles. then maybe we could get some new ip exclusives on nintnedo it feels like bare minus to just get third party thats just me. I mean cloud only games , just make the harder more powerful I do wonder how much they wold charge for ps5 series x specs

We can take Take 2 as they represent a giant AAA third party.

74.6% of their revenue came from console in 2021, and the remainder was shared by PC and other.

A similar 23% stake from PC from Ubisoft

The annoying thing is Nintendo could give us best of both worlds with a Switch Pro or a Switch TV, but they don't care. I get that a lot of people like the hybrid aspect of the Switch, but as someone that has never used it as a handheld and doesn't like playing games at 30 fps and 400p, give me a TV only Switch. I'd gladly pay 500 dollars to play their current games at 4k and 60 fps and I think enough others would too.
