Nintendo not reviving Wii Sports is them leaving money on the table

Wii Sports came out over 10 years ago. We are at a stage now there is nostalgia for this IP. Obviously they released Wii Sports on Wii U but as all games on that system it didn't sell well. With Switch being a massive success I think Wii Sports would have dominated the sales chart once again. We have had Ring Fit Adventure which was a decent seller especially in a time of this pandemic. Wii Sports would have filled that hole of not being to go out and play sports due to lockdown. The Joycons are accurate enough to mimick the same motion controls the Wii Remote Plus had. They could have added way more features such as decent online play, workout routines and etc. Combine all the sports from both Resort and Wii Sports as well as add a few more.

Canada eh
It got stale, hard to keep something like that fresh without completely change.

Smart business: don't keep doing the that thing expecting different results.

Nintendo isn't hurting by any means so they don't need to rehash the same thing every gen. (Not talking about actually games like pokemon, smash etc lol)

I have a better idea. They should release a “Wii HD”. It’ll run original Wii discs and have full backwards compatibility with Wii games. It can use the same Joycons and nunchuck controller. PLUS it’ll have a controller with a screen on it so it can have dual screens like the 3DS. And you can carry the controller with you around the house and stream games to it. And for those who just want a traditional gaming experience, they can use the Pro Controller.

It has something for everybody! Just imagine how much this “Wii HD” will sell!

I have a group of friends, every time we get together for a weekend bash we end up playing golf and bowling. It's actually a lot of fun, a lot more than I remembered.

So much so that I actually went and bought golf within Wii Sports Club (WiiU Sports) the other week. I think it'd be a smart addition to the Switch library as a downloadable title.

Those numbers were pack-in boosted, it was a bundled tech demo for the Wii. I don't think the nostalgia is there for another sports mini game collection.
I'd argue the opposite, the "tech demo" boosted the Wii. Like it or not, Wii Sports was one of the greatest games and system sellers of all time.

Wii sports resort was better. It was even better than real table tennis lol. I bought a Wii recently just for that game. It is the definition of the killer app. I don't know why they abandoned that game, lack of new ideas i guess. They should sell it to EA:/

Agreed. Re-release the first two under the moniker of "Mii Sports Classic" and "Mii Sports Resort." If they do well, start putting out other themed collections like medieval, extreme sports, winter sports, etc. etc. They wouldn't sell gangbusters, but they'd bring a decent return. *shrug*

Exactly Nintendo isn't the type of company that keeps releasing Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros etc. They never rehash.

They’ve probably done research and are afraid that’s the only game people would play if they released it for the Switch.

"why put Wii games on the Switch when, the Switch is selling so well?" - Minimal effort with great results.
Am I exagerating, yes. But people get the point. Wii sports was ported because they needed more sales on the Wii U
I came to the conclusion that Nintendo works on a different dimension that ours. They just do whatever they want.

I agree. I‘m actually surprised how few of these kinds of Wii-style casual games Nintendo has made for the Switch; I would‘ve thought they‘d try to recapture that magic.

Btw, how exactly does the motion tracking for the joycons actually work? I only have a Switch Lite, so I‘ve never tried it. Does it use a sensor bar like the Wii, or a camera like the PS Move controllers? How accurate is it generally?

I once went to go buy the rerelease of Wii Sports on the WiiU and it was stupidly expensive last I checked. Crazy how they thought charging $50 for a game that was a pack-in with the Wii was a good idea.

I still have both Wii Sports games and haven't played them in years. I do have a Wii hooked up to play Gamecube games.

Nintendogs is similarly ignored.
Only a company as stupid as Nintendo would leave their highest selling IPs on the cutting room floor for no reason like this.

People actually want to see Wii Sports return? lol They can't call it that if they do release on the Switch. I guess it'd have to be Switch Sports or something.

I doubt they could recreate the success of Wii Sports with a similar game on Switch, the two audiences are different. Ring Fit Adventure isn't a good example because they completely reworked the fitness game concept, it's a much more involved game than Wii Fit ever was with an actual art direction, great OST, good level design, clever game mechanics, a progression system and boss battles etc. Overall I think the Switch appeals far more to traditional players than the Wii that was all about the blue ocean nongamer audience and these people are on smartphones now.

Create a new IP that is similar but offers deeper gameplay, like Ring Fit Adventure.
Speaking of Ring Fit Adventure, the game sold 8.68 million copies between October of 2019 when it was released and December of 2020. This means that there are likely 9 million+ Ring Fit controllers out there. You would have to think that either Ring Fit Adventure 2 is on its way and/or some third party developer is making a game that uses the Ring Fit controller.

The game has had strong legs so I hope they try a new IP. But a sequel is also likely.

In the realm of money on the table I'd also like to add that they would get way, waaaaay more online subs with a "mild" pay bump in exchange for saaaay.... N64, GC, GBA games, Themes for fav Switch Games and a more robust online UI.

And why not partner with Sega and some other big names??? Have fun with it, every category could have a console bio and history note.

Everyone is either thinking it or saying it, but a Netflix style service would be a welcome change if they could eliminate the anemic drip feed they seem to so casually force us to endure.

Whether you like sports or not, i don't know any game ever made that brought friends and families more together than Wii Sports. Re-hashing the game isn't the problem, it's hoping you can recreate the magic which i don't think would happen.

Yeah that is my feeling as well. That was a different time when casual gaming was sort of a new thing. You’d see people of all ages at the airport or on the bus playing brain training/sudoku on their DS. There was no iPhone or Android yet. Social media was a pretty new thing still. No video streaming services yet.

Wii was a fresh, exciting concept that came out at exactly the right time to be successful. Almost seems kind of quaint and old fashioned now.
