Nintendo Power - November 2008 (V234) - Muramasa, GTA DS

looks great so far. And all the guys whining because this is not another 3d gta, STFU! The DS cannot do 3d anyway and those 2D topdown games were great. I like GTA1/2 more than GTA 3.
So I'm happy with the decicion to make another top down one.

Hey, anyone got the reasons why they lowballed Lock's Quest?
Lock's Quest -- "fun but flawed"
Pros
-the story does give motivation to work through the dull parts
-the side view Seige minigame provides gameplay variety

Cons
-the isometric view sometimes obscures objects losing you precious time
-since Lock doesn't learn new moves or earn experience there are long stretches of the game where it seems you are just fighting battle after battle with no progress
-how you start off a series of battles can make or break you down the line

Only a 7.0 for Populous? What were the reasons?
Populous DS
Pros
-50 complete scenarios add to a good single player mode

Cons
-the control scheme has a modest learning curve since it is indirect (the results are on the top screen while a simple grid is on the bottom)

They didn't really say anything bad about it and it was a really short review.

Plz Legend Of Kage 2 review.
Legend of Kage 2 -- "The DS has given us plenty of solid side-scrollers, but Legend of Kage 2 is something special"
Pros
-more places to go and more ways to kill
-two DS screens allow for more vertical level design
-lots of hidden areas
-huge collection of special attacks and techniques to develop
-good graphics and colors

Cons
-n/a

Having bought this and last months Nintendo Power - I'm mightily enjoying these issues. Chris Slate and the gang are doing fine work.

Well, GTA looks a lot better than I thought it would.

I seriously need to pick me up a DS. It'll be my third, but I mustn't sell this one.

Not sure if these were specifically requested or already covered, but more review summaries:

Wario Land
Pro:
- well-designed levels
- fun moves (especially motion controlled actions)
- side puzzles/bonus missions provide extra difficulty
- animation is great
- good bosses

Con:
- slow-paced
- few enemies can do much damage to you until late in the game
- most of the challenge is in the bosses
- clunky menu navigation
- mediocre music

Samba de Amigo

Pro:
- controls work extremely well; two remotes benefit from rumble

Con:
- may take a few songs to get used to the new pointing mechanics for series vets

Sonic Chronicles
Pro:
- interesting environmental puzzles
- EBA-type stylus moves provide a lot of excitement in battles
- witty dialogue
- characters were fun
- team attacks make combos of characters interesting
- benched players level up
- decent character customization

Con:
- EBA-type stylus stuff gets tedious in minor battles; regular attacks don't do any damage to many enemies
- may annoy you, but won't bore you

- 15-20 hours

Eh, I thought GTA DS would look worse to be honest.

Not a huge GTA fan, but I do really like the series, so I'll see what people have to say about it and consider a purchase from there.

Fair enough.

What.

...You can't find a series really enjoyable without being a huge fan of it?

I like them, but I don't even own all of them, and I don't really look into the upcoming game(s) or anything like that either. :/

Don't know how I feel about GTA DS.

Is that some sort of cartoony Calling All Cars art style I'm seeing there or is that because of the magazine scans?

edit: Speaking of scans, it's a fucking travesty I have to go to one of the GAF reject forums to even get a look at those scans. >_<

So the DS now has an original GTA title and not even a port of a Street Fighter game. What is this, bizarro world?

DS can play the GBA Street Fighter Alpha 3 *snicker*

Sounds like you really have to adjust to playing it differently to the DC game (which in turn played different to the arcade one). In that IGN Video review he didn't appaer to be playing it like how thos cheeta girls in those event videos.

Er? Lock learns 8 abilities in total. I wonder what he meant.

They said he very rarely learns new moves.
Other NP tidbits- Suikoden Tierkreis recruit 108 stars, some return as warriors others as weapons and others as benevolent beasts. Release as early as December 2008-their Game Watch list it as 12/08 release.

Strong Bad episodes 3-5 will be released in the coming months.

Avalon Code- use Book of Prophecy to record things worth saving when world is destroyed and rebuilt.
This book is over a 1000 pages, but it has an index. Use this book to scan and reveal the secret codes that comprise the essence of creatures, objects, people, and plants.
The codes are represented by visual icons on a grid in the book.
Change codes by dragging icons from one thing to another- drag sickness from a terminally ill girl and put on a strong enemy to weaken it.
Also tweak codes to change weapons.
Uses every button on ds- magic spell, the book, and 2 weapons(you can dual wield) are mapped to face buttons, tap R to roll.
Charge sp. attack by holding down attack button.
Juggle foes with dual sword strikes with each juggle camera pulls back eventually revealing the entire planet.
Love sim plenty of NPCS to woo for male and female heroes.
