Hmmm...

http://kotaku.com/5010227/nintendo-wii-gamers-are-hardcore-gamers

The average Wii gamer is a hardcore gamer, Nintendo of America's Cammie Dunaway told the Electronic Gaming Summit today.

Seventy-nine percent of Wii gamers are male, most older than 18 with an income of $50,000 or more and more than half game for five or more hours a week, Dunaway said.

While the people who buy Wii tend to be pretty typical for gaming, the other household members who play Wii aren't, she said.

About 45 percent of the other household members who play Wii are female, with 38 percent 25 or older. Sixty-five of these gamers play at least two hours a week, while only 32 percent play five or more a week.

"The real break-through, the real magic of the Wii console is that it brought new consumers into the game," she said. "We in the industry have a choice to make, do we want to appeal to the few or to the masses? Do we want to sell to more people or sell more and more and more to less people? Do we want to be inclusive or do we want to be expansive? At Nintendo we definitely believe in the power of the expanded audience.

"We hope everyone will join us in showing everyone just how much fun video games can be."

What say you GAF? YAY or NAY?

well let's see the software sales and judge...

it's obvious which games are selling (besides SSBB)

Sure some of the Wii gamers are hardcore, but hardcore gamers own more than 1 console. I highly doubt Wii-only gamers are hardcare gamers.

What's funny though is how Nintendo was singing around that casual people and even old people + soccer mom was buying the Wii.
Now all those people are "playing" the Wii since they have stats proving it still is gamers that are buying and not soccer mom 38 and granma 23.

Are we ignoring Smash Bros. for fun

I wonder how many games that are called Halo 3 sell on the 360 if you don't count Halo 3?

Find out in Jinfash's next shocking report!

I am also Wii only and a core gamer. The old dynamic of improvements in graphics and online capabilities did not interest me.

The concept people don't understand is that once the Wii is bought by a hardcore gamer, other people in the household join in on the fun and request or buy software for it. So you have multiple people per household buying games instead of only one. This is what leads to those insane software numbers.

They aren't saying that. They are still saying that everyone is playing it, but that the core gamer is playing it more. As you'd expect.

Oh, and... Another thread featuring 'hardcore' and 'Wii'? Really?

And a large percent of those gamers are Nintendo faithful and only see Nintendo games and those others (RE, for example, thanks to the outspoken Nintendo support Mikami gave) sanctioned by "the order" as legitimate games to purchase. Doesn't change anything. We knew all this before, yet still it's games like Wii Fit lighting up the charts. That's all that matters in the end, I guess.

no i'm not ignoring it for fun but it's an old first party game that has proven it's popularity and that it's players are mostly hardcore but it's only ONE game that comes once every generation... my gripe is about how (obviously) third party games aren't selling much (except for casual titles), and how serious devs are avoiding it when it comes to high-profile games they're developing.

this is an old worn-out arguement that i wish no one would take seriously :p

A game like WiiFit should light up the chart. It has a very wide appeal which consist of hardcore and casual gamers. WiiFit shouldn't even be called a game.

Sadly I can't agree with this.

I don't dispute the Wii household earnings statistic but it hardly translate into 'core' gamers, who we all know are buying boatloads of 'core' games on the 360.

Hardcore gamers will undoubtedly own all the consoles in the market and there is enough content on the Wii now to warrant a typical hardcore owner to own one. That said, as a primary hardcore platform Wii certainly is not and Nintendo's inability to get the software library moving outside of a bi-monthly release will hurt the platform eventually.

Quoted for people to read.

I don't agree with the reasons that are given. What does income have to do with being a core gamer? What does sex have to do with it? The only credible reason I can see that supports what this guy is saying is that 32% percent play 5 or more hours a week. I don't count how much I play, but I guarantee you it is more than 5 hours.

these threads always end up the same.

i dont know why people get so upset over wii. people liking it are not stopping you from liking the other consoles. people seem to take anything about the wii as some sort of personal attack.

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
I have sold off every console and videogame I own now that Wii Fit is out. Death of gaming and all that...

Take WiiPlay out of the equation and the number would be below the PS2 for software sold. Having said this, the second strongest software showing overall is very impressive.

No it wouldn't. It would end up at 44 something, higher than PS2 and not counting Wiisports.

From the NPD thread

Without Wii Play it´s 44.529.243, still No. 1.

We're out there, and we're in a long term abusive relationship with Nintendo. They take everything we love and turn it into a "bridge title" (read: dumb it down), ignore and take us for granted, go and cheat with casual floozies while we support them and remain their bedrock, then they take us out for one nice dinner a year and we come crawling back like suckers. Sure, all our friends have warned us that we're just being used, and the signs of abuse are clear as day to anyone with an outside vantage point, but damn it, we've been by Nintendo's side for this long and we're sure we can get them to change if we just stay by their side through thick and thin, really.

What? Oh, that. I just fell down some stairs. I'm so clumsy. Please don't tell Nintendo you read this.

I don't understand why people always assume it's only grandmothers buying Wiis. Markets aren't that easy to expand and there was a report a while back on how many lapsed gamers are buying Wiis but overall not many new gamers.

I didn't know my low income would disqualify me as a hardcore gamer. :D

:lol It's funny people are trying to downplay these statistics. Grow the fuck up man.. seriously.
No, I think people are trying to downplay the thread title.

Wii gamers are hardcore gamers? Do they import random shooters and anime games from Japan? Do they also spend thousands of dollars a year on graphics cards to play the latest obscure PC games with the highest framerate? Do they each own 75 copies of Wii Fit, for 'collecting hobby' purposes? Did they buy Metroid Prime 3 and No More Heroes?

And judging by your post history, you don't have any grounds for telling people to grow up.

i think they mean they spend a lot of time playing games, not that they have a room of their house dedicated to video games.

I'm pretty sure hardcore is playing Halo or even Mario over Wiifit here on GAF. But you're right though, hardcore is often wrongly used.

That doesn't mean they're automatically "hardcore gamers" though. I watch a lot of movies, but I'm far from a movie buff.

Indeed. Wii Gamers are Gamers, would make more sense. And you know, people who own a PS3 or 360 and like Ratchet, Halo or GTA... they're just gamers for fucks sake. Gamers. Not hardcore gamers.

More proof.
That just means that Nintendo games sell, and casual games and are advertized on tv..and popular franchises like RE...and games that aren't crap.

Real proof will be when a 3rd party that isn't casual...thats crap, isn't a popular franchise and isn't advertized, and sells great on the Wii...then we'll know that Wii software sells.

Yeah, some of them do. Just like some 360 owners do. And some PS3 owners.

It's not which machine you own, it's how you use it. And I'd wager there are plenty of non-hardcore PS3 owners who are pretty hardcore about their tech and their BluRay movies and their home cinema but not their games. And there'll be loads of 360 owners who love them some Madden but have never downloaded a single thing from XBLA, nor have any inclination to.

I own a JP Wii, with 50 or more classic shooters and platformers, as well as a score-grind shooter released *this year*. I have all three systems, but my primary fun has come from WiiWare this year. And trust me, the hours I've put in online with Dr. Mario make me plenty hardcore.

[EDIT] evidently we're on the same page [/EDIT]

i dont think there is really a set definition for a 'hardcore gamer'

some might consider me a hardcore gamer (as probably 80% of my free time is spent either playing or reading about video games, trying to collect games and game memorabelia, etc) but others won't consider me a hardcore gamer (as i don't own all three current consoles, etc)
