North Korea warned the top American commander in South Korea on Saturday of "miserable destruction" if the U.S. military presses ahead with routine joint drills with South Korea set to begin next month.

"You had better bear in mind that those igniting a war are destined to meet a miserable destruction," KCNA quoted Pak as saying in his message to Thurman. He called the drills "reckless."

Pak Rim Su, chief of North Korea's military delegation to the truce village of Panmunjom inside the Demilitarized Zone, sent the warning Saturday morning to Gen. James Thurman, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency said, in a rare direct message to the U.S. commander.

South Korea and the U.S. regularly conduct joint drills such as the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises slated to take place next month. North Korea calls the drills proof of U.S. hostility, and accuses Washington of practicing for an invasion.

It's funny because they know in the event of a real war, North Korea wouldn't last more then a week before they have Dear Leader in chains and ready to hand over to the UN.

North Korea is like that skinny dude you see at the bar with his chest puffed out like a pigeon mean mugging everybody until someone steps up and he backs down instantly.

Just once, I'd like to hear the US threaten North Korea with total destruction. Pretty sure the Yellow Sea would live up to its name.

I think NK is more like the guy who talks about how he can never lose a fight because of "my mentality, bro, I can't lose, I just see red and kill. Just my mentality."

So they are directing messages specifically to commanders? Lol.. you guys are trolling hard.

So much shit talk. Its like they really believe that their great leader is a wmd or something.

Oh boy. Why even start a war knowing they won't win? I guess they could nuke a place and kill hundreds of thousands but would the Dear Leader and the Eternal President do it and risk their control over the country?? Obviously the US would capture or kill the Dear Leader and assume control over the country, like they did with Japan and West Germany.

My thoughts every time North Korea thumps its chest.

when eventualy people do enter a defeated North Korea they are going to discover unimaginable prison camps akin to concentration camps, the amount of human rights abuse and impoverishment is astounding.

I doubt anyone would want to assume control over NK. Or at least China and Russia would have some thing to say about US gaining control over a country bordering them.

No one will be laughing if things really do turn violent.
True dat. Much of SK is within range of regular artillery and that alone would cost lives, NK probably has more then few dirty bombs and chemical weapons that could cause even more casulties for SK.

Because nobody is starting any wars. NK has essentially taken Seoul hostage, which puts us in a terrible position to do...well anything. NK is pretty much untouchable.

But even so, they have to be more than a little bit delusional to troll the U.S military like this. They probably think they can put up a good fight or something.

Hmm??? How has NK taken Seoul hostage??

North Korea plays the hand its been dealt on the geopolitical stage brilliantly. It's an irrelevant backwater with no resources of importance, an irrelevant location for trade, etc. Only by acquiring or threatening to acquire nuclear weapons and utilizing escalation theory can it even get the US to pay attention.

North Korea's geopolitical strategy is to act like a petulant child in a grocery store: smacking the parent, making a mess, threatening to run away for ever, all because it wants ice cream? What's the parents (US, China) and bystanders (South Korea, Japan, Russia) to do? They can smack the child, but they can't outright beat the kid. Nor do they have the will to do so. The child (DPRK) knows this and knows the self-imposed limits of the authority figures. They can sternly talk to the child and give a small concession (an ice cream sandwich instead of a full half-gallon tub), but the child knows this and knows how to spin these stern talkings-to in their favor: acquiesce in favor of concessions, and the next time out, do the exact same thing.

People like to categorize DPRK as irrational and frightening because of their purported craziness. It's the exact opposite. It's rational actor theory all up in this.

The only way to truly put a stop to this? Freeze their bank accounts and make the oligarchy class in DPRK feel the pain. We did this once in Macau, and DPRK capitulated immediately. Hit them where it hurts.

EDIT: For those who are unaware of the Macau incident...

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/17658737/

DPRK has bank accounts around the world, funded by illicit activity (drug trade, smuggling, arms dealing). These slush funds go straight to the ruling class and keep everyone happy, drunk off luxuries. Want to humble the regime? Cut off their fun money.

Isn't North Korea playing a very long term hand here as well? It's not like nuclear weapons and ICBMs are getting any harder to build as time goes on. How ugly is it going to get when they aren't point nukes at Seoul but at L.A. or something? It may take 20-50 years but at some point it will likely happen.

We should just bomb the shit out of North Korea so they would kindly shut the fuck up.
Why does everyone seem to forget that North Korea is defended by China? America would be stupid to attack a nuclear power in the first place, let alone one backed by fucking China - the second biggest army in the world.

Japan has changed capitals before, I don't see why they couldn't do the same, especially knowing how close it is to NK.

Seems like a very easy propaganda victory for North Korea if you move your capital just because of a threat

Also even if they do move the capital it doesn't make that large city of 23 million people be not there. Capital or not, Seoul would be under threat

I do see where you're coming from but there's a whole host of issues and politics in it

China needs the US as much as the US needs China. Imagine booting out your best customer, that would affect the economy too much. China may be against it but i'm sure if they have to pick between their country's stability or NK, they will pick the former.

What would chanching the capital help? It's not like all the people could move to the new capital (why would they?). And NK probably isn't aiming all it's guns for Seoul. Point is that there would be lot of destruction if war ever brakes out.

Like I said, it's too late already, but maybe changing it when the country divided would've been better, though I guess they were sure the US would unify the Koreas once again. Also, people usually concentrate on the capital, that's why most (all??) countries have a larger population in their capitals. Like Big Des said, it's too late for that, 23 million is too much.

Wouldn't the US have to bomb the shit out of N Korea in an attempt to save S Korea? It's hard to imagine S Korea not being fucked up in that situation considering guns are aimed at Seoul and other cities.

Of course this will fall to South Korea in the event of regime collapse, and as much as people dread the massive economic and social costs that would follow reunification, they (quite understandably) wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm sure the goal would be to bomb as many artillery installations in the shortest period of time possible. Seoul is of course a very densely populated city, so the potential loss of life could be quite devastating.

What would pull China in is the millions of potential refugees swarming over the border from NK should a war happen

China very much does not want this.

Don't know about that, China seems to like their buffer zone. NK also shares border with Russia and they aren't all that keen of the 'yankees either.
