Anyone got a graph showing the correlation between the decline of the gaming industry and the reduction in info in the NPD numbers?

IMO Fanboys no longer buy games simply to boost their platforms NPD result and the industry has suffered
More like too many people were getting their hat handed to them and they pressured NPD to hide their shame from public viewing.

Makes you wonder if they felt it could influence investors from buying stock. At least non-institutions who didn't have NPD access.

I still don't understand what Sony is doing....delaying PS4 to 2014 and launching a bunch of new ip's for this failing system. Wow next year is going to be bad, once Last of Us and Beyond bomb...

Yeah if I were to guess from Harker's comment I'd guess 20K-70K. Which is pretty horrible.

all their new ip's bombed this year...

starhawk = failure
ps all stars = failure
lbp karting = failure
wonderbook = failure
all PSVita new ips = failure

I guess the only sucess they had this year was journey and even that didn't do too well.

Last of Us and beyond will need to sell a lot to break even...I am not sure that's possible given the current condition of PS3.

So everyone who bought the system is only playing Wii Sports Mario/Nintendoland, confirmed?

How much marketing did ZombiU receive?
That's really disappointing if true. However it wouldn't surprised me with the price of the system (either model) most would only buy any additional game or two. I think we here at gaf are rare in buying more then that. If a large number of people that bought the system bought it for a Christmas gift then what would be the point in buying attentional games right away as well. I recall when I was younger I didn't start looking at games for a new system until after Christmas. I would then read magazines to see what had come out or was coming out.

I've only seen marketing for ZombiU on the internet. I don't think there has been any advertising for any Wii U game on TV. Even Nintendo's advertising it more about the system itself then anyone one game, even theirs. It's questionable how far internet advertising alone can get you. Even then it's just youtube videos and game interviews. It's not like you are coming across ads when playing a random youtube video or seeing internet ad banners.

People talk about the lack of hype for the launch. It doesn't seem like there was any attempt at generating any. Not from Nintendo (the Wii was shown off on daytime shows and news programs. Nothing like that for the Wii U!?) or even the publishers of the various games. Ubisoft's been all about Assassin's Creed 3. Which makes sense. However it's not even like they're throwing ZombiU a bone or even piggy backing it on AC3 ads which they could have easily done.

Activision was still in ignore Wii version of Call of Duty mode until right before launch on their own website. Then they finally started actively acknowledging it's existence on their preorder page (something they never did for the Wii version).

I just hope we don't have a repeat of the 3DS. Where Nintendo clearly allowed 3rd parties openings, it not working and nothing selling. Only for Nintendo to enter "panic" mode.

I think you're a bit too doom and gloom and are basing it off games that were made with 1) unproven devs in terms of mainstream success 2) no-good marketing or a combination of both. Naughty Dog games have proven success and they usually get the marketing backing, Heavy Rain did well and got marketing as well. Unfair comparison.

So I've made a little experiment and tried to correlate Miiverse activity with sales numbers. Don't know if this could be of any value. :)

So according to this thread, Mario sold 243k in opening week. Due to the Japanese launch, I found out, that the number by the communities is indeed the number of unique users that have participated so far. Assuming this number roughly correlates with the number of buyers, the ratio between Miiverse users can be applied to buyers as well. So I checked: Mario had 66310 posters, ZombieU had 28018, and CoD had 16549, resulting in a ratio of 42,25% for ZombieU and a ratio of 24,96% for CoD. Applied to Mario's sales number of 243k, ZombieU gets 103k and CoD 61k (rounded up) in the first week.

Not really an accurate estimation by all means, just for fun. For Funky Barn, it wouldn't work, lol.

He is comparing "marketing" of first party with second party *facepalm*

Also all 2013 games will be backed heavily.

I don't know...if a heavily marketed game like Max Payne 3 only does 400K on multiple systems, I am not too sure about Beyond or Last of Us. Both should have been early "must have's" PS4 titles, especially the Last of Us.

Considering it is the best selling WiiU game outside of Mario (and bundled NintendoLand), I doubt it is that low. but if it is.... Wow.
People were ripping me for saying Nintendo teams up for their next console, but this is exactly why. They can't appeal to the hardcore even with exclusives.

I think it gets so bad this generation that they finally realize they can't do it alone.

If you take a look at how Sony's IPs are bombing and how Nintendo needs help, wouldn't it benefit both to team up together?

they'd sell even less as PS4 titles. I don't know why you say "Especially last of us". Naughty Dog has built quite the base this generation.

The first question is whether PS3 is failing or not? Is it trending down quicker than 360? This is important given how close it is to 360 in global shipment figures.

The current gen is still going to dominate both software and hardware sales in 2013 even if both Sony and MS launch new consoles late in the year.

Its far from too late in the game to launch new IP's. PS3 has at the very least another 2 years of sales-life in the primary markets, most likely longer than that.

As for any possible delay on PS4; the reality is that launching early and in a weakly prepared state is inarguably much worse than delaying until you can make the best first impression. You may have noticed that the gaming press isn't above to taking the boots to new hardware, so a botched launch is not smart.

Most people i know watching VGa is for last of us.

Its marketing began with a bang through VGA

Assassins creed is an established IP and not a new IP and it was launched on 3 or 4 platforms. Neither Last of Us or Beyond fit into that category.
Your simply under estimating Last of Us which already is the most hyped game after GTA 5 by many.

It will get the uncharted 3 backing which none of 2012 games got

But Wii U software sales "was abysmal, only Super Mario sold any meaningful units." - From the OP.

That's the quote from Pachter. Abysmal and not "meaningful" aren't the words you'd apply to a game that sold that much. I'm guessing it's much lower.

indeed. They do have a following and it isn't a small one. And it'll only get bigger as release comes closer and marketing ramps up.

Also Sniper you have to keep in mind that by launching on PS3 you're building a fanbase for Last of Us so when the inevitable sequel on PS4 comes out, you already have people interested.

Man the way you guys put it, all new IP's should be launched at the tail end of the system generation...and this isn't true at all. Look at Gears of War and Halo, both were premier first party new IP's launched near the beginning of the system's life. Last of Us would have become an established IP for PS4 right from the start. Now by launching the game in 2013, they won't establish a base and by the time the next one comes out on PS4, will people even care about it?

Argh Last of Us on PS3 is very bad idea....

Sony's IPs over the last year or so have fallen short primarily due to poor marketing. Many of the titles lean a little too 'family-friendly' for being on a system that is the most expensive and likely has an older audience than others.

Despite Sony's efforts to have a nice variety in software offerings, they simply failed to recognize that none of their games will succeed if not promoted properly.

Only problem is the miiverse communities allow posting from people who don't know the game. From general browsing, it appears to be a lot more than you think.

This is an ok series, it doesn't pull Halo or Gears numbers and I remember when it launched on PS2, it sold like 500K in NPD. And launching GoW2 on PS2 was stupid, especially since PS3 software library was so dry for the first year or so.
Now your really trying to be an ignorant guy.

In the previous thread we already told you that god of war 2 sold very well on 2 and many people bought ps3 to play god of war 3

umm God of war 1 did 4.5 million+ god of war 2 sold over 4 million and god of war 3 sold over 5 million.

I believe those numbers are accurate.

let it put it this way, during the first month GoW3 sold about 1 million in NPD. If you combine it's sales from the EU territories and Japan for the first month, it still wouldn't come close to Halo 4's NPD number.

True, but that could apply to all games, so Mario, too. Yeah, the fun method only works if the ratio of people that have the game to those that don't is roughly the same for the games you're comparing. That's why I mentioned it wouldn't work for Funky Barn.

not every game has to do halo 4 numbers to be successful, 99% of games would be cosidered a failure if that was the case.

I don't see how being on PS4 is going to magically make that difference for a game like Last of Us.

Well if you look at context of my post, I was talking about establishing new IP's for new systems...IMO Sony still doesn't have a Halo or a Gears of War. Last of Us would have fitted in that void perfectly, but Sony chose to launch it for PS3.....Sony needs a Halo, Sony needs a Gears of War, a game that sells 3 million during the first month in the NPD. I am just saying Last of US is a lost opportunity, it could have been the killer app gamers look for during system launches.

Then you are a pessimist. It will be a technically competent game by a solid studio, backed by great gameplay and graphics. Similar to what happened with Halo or Gears of War, a perfect opportunity to establish a next gen IP.

God of War 2 sold 833k in the first month in the US, so i think it is pretty safe to say that at least the first 900k copies were sold at full price. Game success on its own, it was not a mistake to put God of War 2 on PS2. How much it would have sold on the PS3 is anyone's guess however.

I just don't see why you would think it's possible for Last of us to do 3+ million or even 2+ million at PS4 launch.... Unless you're saying wait till the PS4 has a base and THEN release it, then that just makes no sense. Also just because Sony is releasing Beyond and Last of Us doesn't mean they've ceased making new IPs. I'm sure there are some cooking for PS4. And I'm sure even the big names like Naughty Dog will get around to making another new one.

Maybe I am. But I just don't see Last of Us as a broadly appealing enough game to to do something on the level of Gears of War or Halo. From a gameplay standpoint, I can't imagine it will have the accessibility of something like Halo, and it's not going to have the longevity either most likely. Best case scenario I suppose is that it's treated as a graphical showcase like Gears was and picks up steam from there. But there's not much shooting and it looks to be heavily narrative based, which hinders its ability to sell.

I fear for Rayman Legends. Of course that will probably be ported to PS3/360 a few months down the line. So will Zombi U as well. If Nintendo can't prove their system is worth developing for now they will be shut out by the end of next year

Did we ever get any data about Persona 4 Golden?
You probably wouldn't want to see that number anyway. Considering Persona's success on the PS2, I never really understood why the game wasn't a PS3/360 title maybe even PSN releases for both a Persona 3 Golden and it.

it's funny because ubisoft is all in on their support and it would be sad for them if zombi u AND rayman flopped horribly. 1 down 1 to go I guess.
