August NPD – Xbox 360 Hits 32 Consecutive Months as #1 console in the U.S.

August 2013 NPD highlights:

Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in August (hardware, software and accessories) reached $213 million, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, August 2013)

During the month of August, Xbox 360 held six of the top 10 console game titles including: “Saints Row IV,” “Madden NFL 25,” “Payday 2,” “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist,” “Minecraft” and “Disney Infinity.” (Source: NPD Group, August 2013)
Looking ahead to the launch of Xbox One, we recently announced it will be available Nov. 22, 2013 in 13 markets – Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, UK, and USA. Thanks to the tremendous interest and support from our fans, after 12 weeks on the market, pre-order sales of Xbox One are still trending as double that of Xbox 360 during the same time period. As a result of this incredible demand, a limited number of additional Xbox One Day One consoles are now available for pre-order.

As Yusuf Mehdi, Xbox corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business development, mentioned last week, Xbox One is proving to be the best place for games, with our exclusive titles winning over 100 awards at E3 and driving pre-order increases of 200 percent in European markets after gamers first played our blockbuster line-up at gamescom—And we look forward to showing off more of these incredible gaming experiences on the show floor at the Tokyo Game Show next week.

We will continue to share more details on Xbox One in the coming months. Be sure to check out Xbox Wire for the latest Xbox One and Xbox 360 news.

According to NPD analyst Liam Callahan, overall sales “grew a modest 1% over August 2012 as growth in software and accessories offset soft hardware sales as we near the launch of the Xbox One and PS4. Excluding January 2013, which was up due to an extra reporting week versus January 2012, the last time overall retail video game sales (hardware, software, and accessories) were up year over year was October 2011.”

Callahan added that “video game retail software sales had their first positive month, up 23 percent, since November 2011. This was driven by the shift of Madden into the August data month and other launches such as Saints Row IV, Disney Infinity and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist. In fact, eight of the top ten games this month were launched in August.” He also noted that “collectively, August 2013 launches made up an astounding 58 percent of overall dollar sales for the month and 41 percent of units sales.”

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 software specifically “combined to grow over 50 percent and are now only down only one percent year to date, which he called “remarkable” considering how close we are to the launch of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. He added that PS3’s Tales of Xillia would have made the top 10 if individual SKUs were counted (in other words, if sales across platforms weren’t combined for the top 10).

In terms of hardware, Callahan said 3DS outsold other platforms for the 4th consecutive month, and Xbox 360 led hardware sales for the 32nd consecutive month.

I think all these hardware decreases yoy shows that people care more about a lower price than putting more stuff in the box with the console.

3DS will be on top again, thanks to the black XL, but these overall market declines are so bad, it's really not much to brag about. I suppose next August will be a different picture entirely with two of these machines being replaced with successors and Wii U presumably doing much better as time goes on.

For reference, last year

Minecraft still trucking along...

Wait... Saints Row IV got denied?! I hate you 'murricans so much. It's got an american eagle plane and a 'murrica gun and a 'murrica suit, what more so you want?

Depressing numbers. 90k for bestselling console it rather painful. Still, I guess it's to be expected with nextgen around the corner.

96K? Holy shit. Wonder what Wii U is?

Also I hope the top 4 all sold very well, for the sake of future Splinter Cell games..

Waiting for 3DS sales, really.

Nice to see M&L chart. YOU get a tutorial, YOU get a tutorial, and YOU get a tutorial!

Saints Row IV also sold pretty well, i think the numbers might be pretty close between the Top 2 since Madden also did like 1 million.

Terrible numbers for hardware though. I don't even wanna hear about VITA or Wii U numbers.

So if the 360 outsold the other home consoles but is down 50%, and the overall market for hardware was only down 40%, then the handhelds saw y-o-y growth?
