NPD Sales Results for December 2008

Eteric Rice said:
Call of Duty Wii didn't do bad at all.

With typical Wii legs it has a very strong shot at selling over 1 million.

It's especially good when you consider it appeals largely to the demographic that already has a 360 or PS3.

lets just skip this CoD Wii chat and move onto something else please...

I don't think anyone wants to hear that the Wii can actually sell software.

Third-party publisher Ubisoft has found a success story in the Wii-exclusive stunt racer Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip. The title, one of the first to capitalize on Nintendo's Balance Board peripheral (now used by more than 4.5 million Wii Fit owners), sold to 470,000 gamers in North America through December of last year, according to data released to IGN by the NPD Group. Good numbers by any tally, but they are all the more impressive when you consider that Road Trip released on November 16 and therefore amassed nearly 500,000 in sales in about a month and a half.

Does that mean it sold all of 20k in Canada, or is it US and Matt was rounding to the nearest 50k in the podcast?

Rounding to the nearest 50K. It's the same reason that they say de Blob sold 250K when it actually sold 230K.

Wow..that chunk of money that they spent on advertising worked. What a novel concept.

Sega (and others): please take note.

Apparently more than 2 years in we still have some confusion among devs/pubs that a good budget, strong advertising (on more than 1 network during primetime), and constant retailer promotion (front page ads, sale price every week) = good sales

Holishit, there's 4.5m Balance Boards in the US? I wonder if it's userbase may eventually eclipse PS3, like in Japan?

Isn't it just about there? Wii fit wont slow down in 2009 and it sells roughly 300-800k a month

Remember when Shaun White was shown off back at E3 and GAF laughed? This just further proves that the Wii and everything related to it is the anti-GAF.

Even after E3 GAF hated it, this thread comes to mind

That's really sad to consider, really. Even though it's only $90 (compared to $400), you still have to spend $250 to use it.

I didn't get that, really. Nintendo's E3 conference sucked, but the Shaun White game was one of the more reasonable portions of it.

Nice.
470k-487k, actually. Shaun White sold 470k according to IGN, and CoD ranked above it.

So what will the Wii haters now bitch about? How their favorite genre isn't selling well on the system?
Well, Wii haters tend to be FPS fanboys, and Call of Duty is doing well enough. I guess they're just screwed everywhere :lol

COD: WAW (and Shaun White to a lesser extent) is a perfect example of a game with a relatively lower profile selling well on the Wii just on sheer userbase size alone.

That 3rd parties shouldn't waste effort on Wii games because Wii owners buy inferior ports in their droves, so just continue giving them crappy ports and reserve effort for the HD versions.

Remember the first screenshots? Knowing Ubisofts Wii track-record, it would have been way too optimistic to think that they'll greatly improve the game.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Ubisoft benefitted from having 2 balance board compatible games ready for the holiday's. I'm really surprised at the lack of BB games announced so far. It's basically like having a platform with no other games competing for space.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. But looking at the wiki page for the balance board, there were 6 retail games released in Oct 2008 or later that used the BB in some form. I think the ones to look forward in 2009 are EA Sports Active and PunchOut.

Then 3rd parties will spend March wondering why Nintendo has $6 billionish in profits and they are desperately treading water.

And then they will realize that there 360/PS3 games are not selling very well, and therefore they need to.... divert more money into HD development, really gouge the budgets of Wii games.

And it's not the CEO's faults at all, really! It's just the evil bad recession that's causing all these problems to pop up at such an alarming rate now.

Since it's not the CEO's faults and actually the recession's faults, let's give some bonus to the CEOs and fir...er...relax some peop...err...resources during the downtime caused by the recession.

Wow... Banjo bombed. And to think the N64 games did over 2 million each.

I hope Rare re-uses assets to make a proper Banjo Three-ie. Maybe THEN they'd see some sales?

Äsch, Fable II really digged its way beautifully through the holidays.

EDIT : according to NPD, Fable II sold 974 000 through November. So, for December, that gives more or less 220'000 copies sold. This doesn't give much information though since Prince Of Persia and Fable II were neck to neck in the X360 charts :(

Hence :

1. 360 CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR* ACTIVISION BLIZZARD
2. 360 GEARS OF WAR 2* MICROSOFT
3. 360 LEFT 4 DEAD ELECTRONIC ARTS
4. 360 FALLOUT 3* BETHESDA SOFTWORKS
5. 360 MADDEN NFL 09* ELECTRONIC ARTS
6. 360 GUITAR HERO WORLD TOUR* ACTIVISION BLIZZARD
7. 360 MORTAL KOMBAT VS. DC UNIVERSE* MIDWAY
8. 360 ROCK BAND 2* MTV GAMES/ELECTRONIC ARTS > 220'000
9. 360 FABLE II* MICROSOFT
10. 360 PRINCE OF PERSIA* UBISOFT

which was a lower bound that was already known.

The DS is now ahead of the PS2 in total hardware in the U.S., Christmas-aligned and launch-aligned. The DS has made up a 6.5 million deficit in the last two years. O_O

The GBA is still 4.1 million up on the DS, Christmas-aligned, and about 1.3 million up, launch-aligned.

It had pretty much everything going against it.

Starting with the Stamper Bros. trying to get Nintendo to take 100% ownership of RARE and then ending up on the Xbox. :p I want RARE back on Nintendo home consoles. :)

Doesn't really seem like the $39 price + free Banjo XBLA helped at all. Microsoft should just bundle it with all Arcades, better than Sega Tennis.
