Gran Turismo 6 has to be up there with the biggest franchise missteps this gen.
Yup. No idea it would flop this hard. Of course in absolute terms its LTD may be very good compared other first party IP's but compare dto previous GT's its a massive decline.

I think one thing Sony didn't expect is how quickly people the uptake for next gen would be. PS3 sales have also declined massively. Should of just pulled a GT3 and launched GT6 fall 2014 exclusive to PS4.

So, known numbers for 2013 are:

NA:
PS4: 2 million
Xbone: 1,81 million

UK:
PS4: 530k
Xbone: 364k

Spain:
PS4: 134k
Xbox One: 28k

France:
PS4: 100k *first 2 weeks
Xbone: 50k* first 3 weeks*

AU:
Xbone: 66k

Germany:
PS4: 250k
Xbone: 100k
Cumulative known numbers for 2013:
PS4: 3 million (without AU)
Xbone: 2,4 million
Two thoughts:
1) Xbone really is the US box (3/4 of these sales occured there)
2) with ~1,1 million PS4s sold-through in ~45 other countries, a 600k Xbone sold-through in only 7 other countries seems far unlikely -> confirmation that those 3 million were estimates based on shipments?
Any other key/large markets/data missing?

Eh, I think Titanfall will do big business for MS. Only in the short term, but it'll still be impressive to see just how many units it can shift.
I dont think anyone with sense will argue otherwise.

But its being talked up from being a simple breakout ip, that will be successful in creating a new profitable franchise, to a game thats going to sell millions of consoles on its own and is going to at the very least sell Gears of war numbers.

Im not seeing it. Nothing outside of wishful thinking is suggesting this game is going to sell more than a few million. Its a fantastic result in of itself and a great springboard to start a franchise, but its not proven to have the sales chops people are claiming it has.

Well Gears of War really showed you that you were in the next gen when you compare it to other early shooter games like Perfect Dark Zero. Titanfall doesn't really do that. It's not really built to wow people graphically, and so it may become difficult to see a huge difference outside of resolution bump between 360 and XBO. Assuming there is a resolution bump. If it struggles to match XBO's BF4 graphically, it's probably not the hot seller you think.

It's going to be a cleaner looking PS360 gen game. Add to that the fact that it has no campaign or solo/offline mode, and it's not looking like some amazing achievement in gaming that is "must have" to get people rushing for those XBO's.

While I do generally prefer Sony, I do admit the saltiness in this thread from not being able to crow over the sales is amusing. Personally I'm glad that one side won't outright dominate the other in the USA as it will keep Sony (Or at least SCEA) from becoming complacent.

All of your points are perfectly valid, but you're forgetting one essential, overriding factor: Titanfall has big... fuckin'... ROBOTS. Robots with guns.

Plus, check out the minimalist next-gen UI:

Actually I think a greater disparity IS needed. Microsoft screwed up with the XB1 unveiling and needs to feel a burn from that, and "roughly equal" isn't much of a burn given the last generation position. I do think it would be ideal to be a reversal of PS3/360 numbers in USA, where XB1 is relevant but PS4 is generally seen as the go to gaming platform instead with certain franchises having a lead on XB1 for one reason or another. You make it nearly equal or even with Microsoft GAINING the upper hand then it just looks like they can do whatever they want.

If anything it could make people want to just go straight to the X1 version.

This could be the game that encourages all those current 360 owners who haven't upgraded to either new system yet to make their decision.

Price is what will drive conversion not software. The Xbox 360 did so well in Dec. because it's replacement was 2.5-5 times it's price at any given moment during the holiday season in the US so the bargain hunter's choice was easy. The price gap for the PS3/PS4 is no where near as wide. If anything Titanfall will encourage greater sales for the 360 as an inexpensive way to get in on the hype.

On a side note, the PS3 needs a price drop quick or it will fall off a cliff. I've never seen 1st party releases tank so quickly (both sales and price), in December I bought Beyond TS for $23, puppeteer for $16, Ratchet & Clank for $12. I am glad for the bargains but sheesh.

Yeah, they clearly didn't want to pull a Wii and went full force with production. Makes me wonder how far we'll be by this time next year.

They must have expected it to go similar to the prior two gens where they could still release successful games at or even after the new console launches, but this time it seems there was more of a burn. But it probably helped that PS2 was crazy scarce for awhile and PS3 was crazy EXPENSIVE.

I'd argue the opposite, Sony have not shown complacency for 3 generations of consoles 2 of which were dominant yet MS seemed to put their foot off the pedal when they gained a healthy lead in the US, you should be far more concermed about MS complacency from a dominant position than Sony based on history.

I think it took somewhat different forms: Sony never really eased up on the software whereas Microsoft seemed to have lost focus entirely halfway through the 360's life. Although both have had arrogant behavior at the top: PS3 was $600 and Sony had some fairly restrictive release policies on games (though they seemed to have eased up... mostly anyway), and we saw the software complacency on Microsoft's side and the whole XB1 debacle. Ideally one company screws up, and a competing one either beats sense into them or drives them out entirely. Which is why I think it'd be better for the PS4 to get a stronger lead, though given it's mainly supply constrained it seems POSSIBLE that can happen anyway.

Titanfall is a Source Engine game. It's hard enough to make Source games look impressive for current gen standards and it hasn't gone through the same amount of rewrites as the Quake 3 engine they used for COD games.

There's too much data missing to make such a statement based on this data. The US-to-other percentage is 66% for PS4 and 76% for XB1 (excluding AU where we don't have PS4 numbers). I agree that the XB1 is going to see the majority of its success in the US, but these particular numbers prove as much for PS4.

Heh...so PS4 almost sold as much as Xbone despite being severly supply constrained ?!

MS is in serious trouble this time around.

Cross posting from the MN thread:-

As far as im concerned the software attach rates are the far bigger story going forward.

It shows that even if the xbox one trails the in amount of consoles sold, the people would do buy the console buy far more games.

That coupled with live fees, help microsofts bottom line much more. They make very little off hardware in comparison.

The attach rate for ghosts and BF4 in particular are very promising for Titanfall.
Another reality that doesn't get brought up in these threads.

Sony has a much more robust first party than Microsoft, that is undeniable.

But the majority of their varied first party output doesn't sell.

What does, still doesnt sell equal to microsofts bought exclusives and first party output.

Its worrying that this seems to be baring out in the PS4/X1 generation too.

Oh and why has nobody made a fastest selling joke about the PS4?

That was more Apple level arrogance on Sony's behalf the tech you got was great for what they were worth and it wasn't like they were just presenting the tech expecting it to sell itself like what it feels like MS are doing with Kinect.

They corrected the mistakes though. Punishing them now wouldn't necessarily deliver the message you think it would. I agree however that I wouldn't ever trust them with a leading role in the industry again after that.

I dunno, Sony was about ready to run with JUST the Cell on PS3 until as I recall hearing Mark Cerny talked sense into them and they got a dedicated GPU thrown on (though that was kind of a half assed effort unfortunately), can you imagine how things would've gone then? Maybe it'd be a more sensible system profit-wise but it'd have been completely smoked by the 360 pending a miracle.

Man, after some of those "they're just not ready statements" I wonder, nevermind that it's still a more expensive yet weaker console. They didn't - couldn't really - fix everything afterall. But that may well prove itself once supply's not as constrained, the next few months will be telling I suspect.

EDIT: Nevermind that indie policy. Going to be really frustrating if a lot of them want to go PS4/XB1/PC and XB1 ends up holding up a lot of them.

I never got why that is. Maybe the world outside of the US doesn't buy software in proportion to hardware, I don't know.

I also wonder what the heck happened to all of those indie exclusives (timed I know) that Sony promised at launch I'm still waiting for Octodad, Minecraft, etc.

Octodad hasn't hit anything yet, and I wouldn't be surprised if being indie games they ended up needing delays.

Let me know if I've missed anything or anything is wrong and I'll correct.
The numbers comparison between platforms highlights that Rayman probably would have done better if released in February for Wii U as intended as it sold better there anyway and would have had 0 competition at the time.

Glad to see Sonic: Lost World recovered slightly from its horrible 30K-ish debut. It's not Colors, but it's still pretty good. :) Also surprised that the Wii U version of MH3U is near 100K. Awesome!

I am genuinely surprised Project X Zone did 87K. That is awesome! :D I'm also very pleased with Ni no Kuni's performance!

The Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F numbers make me sad. ;_;

Octodad hasn't hit anything yet, and I wouldn't be surprised if being indie games they ended up needing delays.
My gut tells me that they aren't delayed but rather never intended to release alongside or within weeks of the system. More like a way to say "look we have all these indies". I'm still excited for them though.

Ni no Kuni was $12-15 most of Dec. if it did move units at that price then I dunno.

Well, there is no way it would have sold more only on Wii U in February than it sold on all platforms later in the year. It likely might not even have sold as many on Wii U as less people owned one. Only Ubi can say if it was worthwhile and if porting costs justified those 92K extra sales.

I guess as they are doubling down and putting it out on PS4 and XBOne too maybe it was?

Probably, "launch window" and all. And they'll still come out ahead of Wii U and stuff like Pikmin 3 for actually coming in something that can be considered launch window.

I don't think I need to bookmark it, it sounds pretty reasonable. What's even coming out on PS3 in March?

I was just confused about why you were drooling over the thought of it, but after seeing a few of your posts I'm not confused anymore.
I'm a big Titanfall nut. Buying it day one on the PC. IMO the game will be this gen's COD4 - a game changer.

I just cannot wait for it... it reminds me of Quake 3 + Modern Warfare + Shogo.

I would really like Titanfall to be out for PS3/4 (my consoles of choice) but oh well, them's the breaks. I won't boycott it just because of that. PC day one. Hopefully it runs better (bug free) than that piece of shit BF4.

Who would have thought that the Wii U launch window and retirement window would potentially be so close :(
