Holy shit. Here I thought consoles were in decline and these might the last console generation. This is amazing, really.

"But we'll completely ignore the Wii sales because it completely negates what we want to portray."

The software drop YoY is something I didn't expect and the attach ratio of 3 for the PS4 must also be concerning. I know that there is time to pick it up but it seems like the trend is to for people to buy less games. Add in that most titles for this gen are more expensive, especially compared to last year end of gen, and the number of software units seems to have hit a sharp decline. Last year was a software wasteland, how can this year be worse.

Digital might pick up some of the slack but it still is a troubling trend.

Last year had NCAA Football.

Well, the 360 was very supply constrained (2-300k in december IIRC) and the PS3 didn't exactly light the NPD on fire when it launched at 500-600 dollars...

until you consider that they ignore the biggest selling piece of hardware at the time with that comparison. Not saing console gaming is doomed, just curious why they always ignore that fact, and the fact the 360 and ps3 were very supply constrained at the time

People like to believe that the loss of the expanded audience was completely inevitable even though Nintendo's efforts to retain the were too poor to even count as "half-assed."

I'm perfectly fine with people buying less expensive retail games, only if it means they in turn purchase more inexpensive indie titles on PSN/XBL.

He IS that kind of guy.

I didn't even know who that guy was before I joined GAF, but I've learned enough in that time to be bothered by the sight of him.

ND are one of the most efficient AAA developer there is to. They know how to manage budgets without sacrificing quality. I know that TR had more platforms so more cost added but its still amazing that They had a much higher budget then ND had with TLOU but fell short production values wise to them.

And to make an attempt at discrediting their work as being something that will only be appreciated by a relatively small portion of gamers is completely disrespectful. The fact that he insisted on the Uncharted series being less than successful highlights the idea that a lack of respect really was the impetus behind that statement.

December the 9th . I'm assuming 2011. 11 days after the game was revealed at the VGA awards.

We hadn't seen enough of the game to make a comment on its sales either way, but we definitely hadn't seen anything to suggest it was going to become the success it did.
Hmm, that's earlier than I thought. Fair enough. But wasn't Walking Dead pretty popular by then? I'm just figuring there's some crossover between the people who'd like Walking Dead and also enjoy TLOU.

EDIT: Chobel says it's 2012. Yeah I'm really wondering why he'd think so little by then given UnCharted sales. Did he think horror games were dead?

Don't forget Wii -> Wii U

Also, we don't know what the legs are going to be like on these things. Hopefully the pace stays up, but who knows...

All the big games are coming holiday 2014/early 2015 and beyond, sales should be even better.

The Halo/Uncharted/Zelda holiday 2015 combo will be pretty crazy.

Especially since it had a budget of what was it, 60,000,000?

Selling 5 million of just uncharted 2 for example, especially since it is first party, puts massive profits for the series. Hundreds of millions made on the series no doubt. That is success.

“Xbox One continues to sell at a strong and steady pace following the release of the $399 console in June, when month-to-month sales more than doubled,” a Microsoft spokesperson told GamesBeat. “We continued to see this momentum in July.”

I have to assume "momentum" relates to "strong and steady pace" rather than "sales more than doubled"

So potentially similar or less(4week vs 5week) sales to last month.

Forgot to write this but yesterday I went to the barber at the mall and saw shitload of TLOUR banners covering half the west side of it. I was impressed because you will only see this for FIFA or a CoD game

This could mean two very different things if this were a coffee appreciation website. Or a porn site.

People, there are far more pressing matters at hand here. Against all odds and despite being stocked in only two retailers (both in Arkansas), it seems the Vita has seen some growth! Growth!

It's giving me a growth, I'll tell you that for nowt.

I was going to pick up a Vita this month but found out it doesn't support TV out. Between no TV out and the expensive proprietary memory cards, I had to buy a PSP 3000 for my tactics ogre fix instead. I am disappointed as I wanted to buy a Vita.

PS3 wasn't supplied constrained. I remember seeing them on shelves as early as January and February of 2007. I'm sure 360 had a similar situation in 2006 as well.

So in thread we've learned:
- Surprise Birthday Presents are bad
- 81K is suddenly acceptable
- The DS is back.
- Vita's monthly has surpassed its Japanese weekly sales.

Feel like I'm missing something.
EDIT:
Oh yeah.
- Gies is a resident psychic.

I think people often overestimate how well a giant franchise like Kart will do even on a flopping console.
It's obviously selling well and it moved a few consoles (like most reasonable people have predicted), but it was never going to "save" the WiiU. The odd hardware design, half-serving marketing, confusing branding, mismatched software ecosystem, and 8 month long 2013 drought are powerful forces that have deeply wounded this system. There is almost no coming back from mistakes like that in this industry.

Every reasonable Nintendo fan needs this engraved somewhere so as to not forget it,
