Just thinking, what if Microsoft have got the star wars exclusivity. Seeing how star wars movie is breaking all records in box office left and right and with the power of Microsoft marketing I think Microsoft could have easily erased all the ~800 thousand lead of the PS4 in the USA.

Such a missed opportunity

This thread needed a good joke to lighten the mood for the coming MAU.

I do wonder how Sony will balance out the first party/third party promotion for next year. Maybe just one major first party title along with the big third party titles coming? Or just letting third parties run wild during the holidays again?

You put in the "~800 thousand" so diabolically, knowing very well that the gap is over a million. Only if you put this much thought into something meaningful, only if...

Just because the movie is extremely successful doesn't mean it'll trickle down to the same scale on the gaming end though.

Star Wars have always been extremely popular, even in the Prequel Trilogy era, yet SW games never Lit the world on fire. Just because there's smart cross promotion timing with a blockbuster movie won't change that in the short term.

CoD is still king.

I just wanted to remind everyone that this is an NPD thread. You can talk crazy about only USA market. :)

I think gap increased over a million after November and after the release of star wars bundle.

If Microsoft had got that marketing deal than increasing the gap to over million would have remained only a dream for Sony
and would have become reality for Microsoft

Gran Turismo Sport is only game I would feel completely confident about in that late October/November release schedule. MAYBE Horizon Zero Dawn. Definitely not The Last Guardian or Gravity Rush 2. Those need to be be out by September.

September is Destiny 2 month. Next year is so packed I can't even make educated predictions as to where titles will fall.

Forgot about Destiny 2. That's just one game though. Can't avoid all of the competition. I know it will annoy some people to see Destiny 2 get a harder push from Sony than their own games, but that's business.

Sony doesn't localize much from Japan, but they used to and it's too bad they don't anymore. That's mostly it and it's a little confounding to me how people are trying to argue against it, by any means necessary in some cases it feels like.

It wasn't even really an argument, just an observation. I guess there was already blood in the water from the other "risk taking" line of discourse concerning Sony so I guess I might've stepped in it.
By why do they need to when the vast majority of the niche/risky content you're talking about is being localised by the likes of Atlus, NISA, TK etc. Hell, even Steins;Gate was localised by a 3rd party publisher.

Sony isn't localising these titles because 3rd party publishers have it covered.

Well, those were two of four random examples I threw out. Maybe they could've happened, maybe they couldn't, but probably Sony didn't bother seriously trying. And in MH3P's case they actually stood in the way of the PS3 version coming over.

The real issue more though was "why did Sony only release two Japanese made games this year"? On the bright side they're already improving next year (from 2 to 6). So is Microsoft actually (from 0 to 1).
I also find this to be a rather futile argument. Unless Nintendo localises these games, they have next to no other content for their platform except for their own drip feed of first party content and indies.

It's not even worth a discussion anyway though, because there's quite a big slate of Japanese games headed to both PS4/PSV in the next year or so that will 100% make it to the west. So, my question again is, what are you trying to argue here? Sony isn't localising as many Japanese games anymore, but why does it matter who is publishing them when they're being localised anyway. Atlus, Bamco and TK are pretty much localising every single game they make these days. I'm actually struggling to think of note worthy, niche PlayStation 4 or Vita games of the last year or so that haven't been localised/announced for localisation/stand no chance of being localised.

3rd party will still be the main focus-

So maybe a first party title in September or early October. I would rather Sony keep first party titles for the beginning of the year. Don't give in to the holiday only counts narrative

Is Destiny 2 really going down next year? Because if so shouldn't we be seeing it like really soon?
I guess it depends how big it is.

If its actually a proper sequel then I would guess we see it revealed around March-May.

If its another TTK expansion but a bit bigger because of no DLC this year maybe its saved until E3.

I am not sure Bungie can deliver a proper sequel in 2 years so I dunno what exactly 2016's Destiny will be.

My bet is Destiny 2 reveal at Sony E3, with release in September/October in 2016.

Thats my guess, because a 2017 release would be 3 years between games? That seems like a lot of time.

Halo 3, ODST, and Reach released pretty close to each other, so I think Bungie could do it.

This is where I'm at. I've theorized for a while that Destiny 2 got delayed a year but the Kotaku article stated that no way Activision will let them slip and delay it. Its hard for me to imagine a full on Destiny 2 though already by September. If its going to be the scope it should be I don't even see how that is possible

Not to derail but, you didn't want to put a specific date on yourself? :p
I was just going back to when the consensus on here seems to remember the most fondly, as well as the boom of the internet was right around the corner which expanded the warz to it's new found battleground, lol.

Been gaming over 30 years, and remember my Vik20/64 quite fondly. Loved every bit of it, and even programmed games on the C64/128 with books from the library when I was 8, lol.

I think it'll be called Destiny 2 , regardless of whether or not it's just a gigantic Taken King or a true massive leap forward.
I would like for it to be the equivalent size of Borderlands 2 with the same amount of variety and stuff to do in the open word. The open spaces in Destiny right now are worthless. I know that probably won't happen.

And please leave last gen behind. The current game is already being held back by maintaining parity with old consoles.

To an extent, I think tempering expectations RE: Destiny 2 is something everyone should be doing. Not because its going to be TTK sized, but rather because whatever it is, it's not gonna fit within the traditional mold of what we consider a 'sequel'.

No matter what, Destiny is an iterative experience, and its been designed as such from its inception. They've stated in the past that their goal is to have one character you create that will be a part of whatever is 'current' in Destiny. In that sense, a Borderlands 2 style refresh of all known areas & classes just isn't going to happen with Destiny 2. However, I imagine that the content it does introduce is going to be both substantial, and something that builds upon what we already have. The most we might get is something that completely replaces the currently chain of missions/campaign/quests that is available for all starting & current players, and all of those missions are scrapped for new missions, while reusing or expanding on older environments where appropriate.

We also need to stop compartmentalizing Destiny's content scope to the amount of planets it has. We got 4 planets in Destiny 1, and the amount of content spread across them is about equivalent to the entirety of the Dreadnaught in TTK. I can already tell a lot of people are gonna likely look at the planet count in 'Destiny 2', see its smaller than what we got in Destiny 1, and call it a rip off.

Why rush Playstation 5 if Ps4 will crush Ps1 and Ps3 in sales?
Simple, because this killing streak might be over as soon as MS releases a new console. And even the NX might (!) have an effect.

That said, Sony must be prepared for whatever the competition comes up with. They cant start to develop PS5 when MS announces their new console, which would give them a head start. Pretty sure guys like Cerny already have an idea about the concept of the PS5, resp. they are already working on it.

Surely they are working on their next platform.

If an obsolete company like Nintendo can prepare a new platform in 4 years, Microsoft and Sony can also do the same easily. But I do hope they're working for a big jump and not a small one like nintendo will do.

The hardware development cycle is such that as soon as one console (phase) is finished, you generally start for the next. The PS5 has probably been in development for the past 2+ years now, if not before for some aspects.

Now when I say development, the final specs probably aren't set in stones quite yet, but the choice of GPU/ CPU manufacturer is probably done, and negociations ongoing about pricing, volumes and features, alongside having engineers like Mark Cerny talking to devs about their wish lists and trying to think 5 years ahead.

The very last things to be developped across the next 3 years will be Ram amounts, CPU/ GPU.clocking, types of network adapters/ physical disc support (if any, but I'd be surprised), and launch software features, as well as the SDK to be sent to devs as soon as the GPU/CPU chipset and overall MB will be set. Form factor also comes pretty far into dev afaik.
