Based on those benchmarks in the first review, I'm not sure there would be any reason to pay the extra $50 for 1060 against 480. A used 980 (factory OC perhaps?) is another option. I have been away from PC gaming and graphic cards since 6870, though :p Which one is gonna get better driver support?

Are you only planning on playing DX12 and Vulkan games? If so, it's probably a wash. If not, then the 1060.

A used 980 is unlikely to be a very good idea due to the 4GB memory size, at least in games with very large texture options.

Over 10 frame difference over the 480 in a lot of cases on those video benchmarks, damn. Especially at 1080.

From the HKEPC review, outside of Fallout 4 where the GTX 1060 had an 8-9fps advantage, the rest is only 2-3fps. For a price difference of $30 and 2GB less VRAM over RX 480...

EDIT: Video reviews with more games show a slightly larger gap. In some games like Project Cars and Doom the lead is 10-15fps more.

While the actual difference is $30, we all know the BS that has happened so far with Pascal launch. Actual price difference may end up being higher, especially when compared to FE cards if indeed the AIB cards for the GTX 1060 don't ship soon.

the framerate differences seem to be pretty much as expected
what really matters i think will be the price range

Ouch. This is so much faster than the RX 480 that the 480 is made completely irrelevant by this. For AMD's sake, I hoe what they said about RX 480 being a full chip was a lie. I guess AMD really isn't able to compete with Nvidia at all in any market segment anymore until they ditch GCN.

AIB cards will launch today, and for less than the FE. The FE is only being sold through Nvidia's website.

So far the difference at 1440p isnt that much between the 480 and 1060.
Im curious to see the overclocking potential each card.

Edit. Except project cars, thats a huge difference, and a game I regularly play too! I think my decision has been made...

DOOM is being benched in OpenGL and its obviously much, much faster running under Vulkan.

Project Cars just runs shockingly on AMD cards. Let's wait and see.

Tone down the hyperbole, champ.

Will myself on the new thread, lol:

Little reflexion about pricing and FE popular discontent 1h before release.

Back at 2011 I bought one of the best AIB version of GTX560ti for 184€.

It was based on a full GF114 chip, 384 cores, 1GB of RAM on a 256 bit bus, 360mm2 die size.

Absolute high end part from Nvidia was GTX580, based on full GF110 chip, 512 cores, 1,5GB of RAM on a 384 bit bus, 520mm2 die size.

So I got 75% of top end card cores, 66,67% of RAM, 66,67% of bus width and 65% of total transistor count. At least that chip got +6,48% higher default clocks to alleviate the difference. More when factoring OC on both cards.

Now, with 1060, I would have to pay around 350€ for 50% cuda cores coming from 1080, with lower clocks on core and much lower clocks on memory on a 200mm2 die. But thing becomes absolutely terrible when we use the real, still unreleased, top end chip from Nvidia, reserved for Titan/ti. It should be based on GP102, with 384 bit bus if they can't manage to use HBM yet, 1060 would sport 33,33% of cores, 50% of memory at best considering a 12GB ti, 50% of bus width on top much lower memory clock and 41,84% of die size.

Scam falls short. But it is what it is with the beggar competence we have to suffer.

I think it will come down to actual retail pricing.

If it's $239 for an 8GB 480 or $249 for a 6GB 1060, I think the 1060 will be favored. But if it's $249 and $300, I think the 480 will be just fine.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Still not down with 6GB and 192-bit memory bus.

8GB and 256-bit it would have been such a no brainer over the 480.

But sweet Jesus the AMD 480 AIBs need to get their boards out.

I have about $350 saved up and wanted to spend a max of $260 and get an excellent 480, but hell I may save for an extra week or two and get all out with a 1070.

yeah, 460 and 760 were quite good too but like 960 compared with 970 wasn't a great deal and neither is this one. You used to get a lot more from x60 card but now it's just good enough, entry level performance for that year and their lower end cards are completely awful now and worth nothing. Those x40-x50 models used to be entry level, now they aren't worth getting ever, it's price gouging really.

On DOOM -

Be careful to check what API benchers are running the game on as DOOM in Vulkan is 25%+ faster than it runs in OpenGL. In fact there is no reason why any review should quote DOOM's 480 performance in OpenGL rather than Vulkan when comparing these cards. Vulkan mode is a toggle any user can turn on now (it's not like a DX12 mode where not everyone has Windows 10 to run a game under that API).

So it should be DOOM 480 Vulkan vs 1060 OpenGL or Vulkan performance (whatever is faster). Already a questionable video review above is misrepresenting the 480 performance and we've got people quoting the performance gap.

so it range exactly like what the rumors have said before. between the 970 and 980.

how much is the 980. not bad considering the price. i wonder if this is a better option than the 480 or not since that one has 8 gig of ram compared to 6 on this one ( i think,, right ? )

This.

Best case scenario for nVidia / worst case for AMD: if nVidia AIBs can actually deliver volume 6GB models for $249 then AMD could drop the price of the 480 8GB models to, say, $219 and still be competitive...or $199 if they want to really open up a price war/move volume. A smaller price drop means AMD will, at best, tread water with market-share.

Having said that, I'd say that based on what we've seen so far from nVidias 1070/1080 launches, the likelihood of the 1060 being available in volume for $249 is about the same chance as everyone on GAF winning the lottery in the same day. Far more likely we'll see spotty availability for at least a month with pricing in the $279 - $329 range. Which means the reference 480 8GB models can probably stay put at the $239-$249 price point and sell very well over the next few weeks before AMD has to consider a $10-$20 price drop.

Lol What the hell is going on in here?

The wait for real reviews is killing me....the two month wait for a decent aib card at or under msrp will be even worse. If that hk site is to be believed it looks like nvidia has a 980 @ $250. Under 120 watts. Impressive. Looking at the chip size and config you know they could sell it cheaper and still profit...but why should they? There's no good reason too.

Pooya

that's to be expected...maybe by the end of year you can get this for MSRP. 1060 seemingly was rushed to counter RX480 but they can't provide the volume just yet.

If 4GB (really flashed 8GB) 480s are profitable at $199 they can easily drop that low if needed.

These can't be real prices, it'd be DOA...

This is one of the top OCed editions (MSI Gaming X/Z is the best 2 slot factory OC card on the market right now) vs a reference blower card. Not sure why you would even compare them.

Holy Shit! The 1060 has been completely thrown out the gate!
This year's Nvidia cards are such a clusterfuck.

Nvidia has no reason to lower prices when they own so much of the market, unfortunately. That's really why people want AMD to get back in the game.

The Italian prices posted in the other thread were all near 350e as well, can't believe they're all high-end. But what does it matter, they'll sell out regardless :p Nvidia is on fire.

Well, according to the screenshot the price of that Gaming X card without taxes is 304 euro which is kinda OK for a top of the line OC edition when the MSRP is 235 euro.

I think that in Europe there will be cards for as low as 280 euro. That's 235 MSRP + some 45 euros of taxes. Don't expect anything lower than that.

x6xx series have been always a mixed bag for Nvidia depending on generations. 8600 had 32 cores, 8800gt had 112, full G92 chip was 128. It was an absolute crap, to say it short. Then 9600gt, based on the G94 had 64 cores, paired with higher clocks it wasn't that far from 8800 series. GTX 460 (once OC'ed) to GTX560ti were more than decent cards. GTX960 was bullshit, with 1060 being in a mid place.

AMD can't drop prices with a bigger chip and more complex PCB. Their profit margins are already tight as is, unlike Nvidia.

So it costs more than the 970 I bought 2 years ago but isn't all that much faster. This generation of GPUs is terribley expensive
