MeetUp FAQ - Shamelessly stolen

How long have these things been around?
See the OP here for a documented list of all the NYC GAF meet ups to date: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=170651251&postcount=1

But I'm not a social butterfly and prefer to stay home to x activity. Strangers are weird.

”Do not be too timid or too unsure about your actions. All life is an experiment." Yeah, we don't know you and have never met but if you want to get over that, the best way to do it is to go out and socialize. We were all strangers at some point before we met.

I'm banned and/or stopped posting. Can I still come out?
The more, the merrier so feel free to show up!

How many people typically come out?
Typically 10-25 people; it consists of regulars and new comers. We've had GAF members visiting the city from abroad come out and join us as well. If you're not a fan of big groups, like GAF itself, those big groups split up into smaller groups of discussion so no worries.

How long do these meetups last? Do you peeps always meetup at one location or move around the city?

In a nutshell, they go as long as they want so long as there's still a party left long after many people bail. The first location is the jump off point to other places once a decent party shows up.

Do I have to drink to be cool with you all?
Nobody will pressure you to drink so if it's water or soda you want, more power to you. But if you drink, make sure you keep an eye on how much you consume because we preferably want you to get home safe. A couple of GAF members have been unfortunate victims of muggings after we parted ways from past meetups.

But I don't drink and don't wanna be bored
Thanks to the advancement of technology, you can entertain yourself and guests with the latest in gaming! Bring along your Switches, 3DS, Vitas or if you're like Makai tablet and play some games with others!

But I'm poor and I'm trying to be frugal! Rent isn't cheap you know!
We all have bills to pay and are willing to take some of our time to meet up; one night out isn't going to kill your budget. If anything, someone will buy you a drink and/or share food.

Oh no! It's too cold/hot to be outside! You guys are crazy!
Dress accordingly then. While weather is something to keep an eye on, it's not a factor so the show must go on.

This is going to be really awkward isn't it?
It's only awkward if you make it awkward for yourself. You're welcome to bring name tags or get creative.

How do I locate GAFfers once there?
This is always a difficult one for first-timers. Usually it's easy enough to spot a large group, but how do you approach to find out it's the correct large group. Usually, it's best to find the person who looks most approachable and just ask them, most will say yes or no and move on.

Where I can go air out my grievances about how expensive NYC is when there isn't a meetup?
The NYC GAF OT. :)

I might as well go. I don't drink though. I'll probably be one of the people in a corner somewhere.

There are games
People are looking into bringing their Switches

And you can hang out with Hero Prinny

I would not bring a switch to this place. It is a college dive bar. They have beer pong that's about it for games.

Probably won't be able to make it.

Ahaha I sometimes go to 13th Step. I will probably forget about this day and still end up at that bar at the same time that this is going on.

Ah The 13th Step, the most college bar in the East Village. So much fond memories of that place; I got my first kiss there 4 years ago and had an awkward conversation with a drunk girl before security helped her to the exit. What happened to playing the Switch at a rooftop like the initial premise of the ad? :D

Conflict of interest for me on this date because I have an online DnD meet up with some co-workers. I'll need to find out what time they plan to do it at; if it's early in the day, then I will have a good idea on how the rest of the day is going to pan out for me. It will ultimately depend upon how much of the campaign we get through.

I would also like to point out in the time since the last GAF meetup, there's now a Discord channel for people to keep track of where everyone is, lurk, or talk about your food combinations which may or may not include Fruity Pebbles with whipped cream. Quote it and you will reveal it:

Damn, would love to go go this, but my son is being born on Saturday. Hope you guys all have fun. Maybe I'll catch up next year!

Oh wow! Congrats! Why would you think to miss the birth of your child to drink with a bunch of nerds at a bar in the first place?
Hopefully it's not Kale Breckin. :p

Does Dragon Ball count or is that too mainstream?
I mean yeah it's anime, but um...it's not too high on my list. I like it, but I think I can only deal with it currently in Team Four Star fashion, I'm watching Dragon Ball Super though.

Between the OkCupid Reddit meetups this weekend and this, I'm torn! It's like making me pick between ketchup and barbecue sauce for condiments. Why not both? But JadedWriter is doing photography duty so hmm...only a bowl of Fruity Pebbles could entice me.

Mid-week bump

And also think the plan is to head to the Alligator/Crocodile (always forget which is in Union Square) Lounge around 10ish when 13th Steps gets insane. We'll be in the Union Square area for sure!

I'm not guaranteed to bring my camera. If I do it'll be my smaller one and no flash. Bars suck for photography.

Oh that sounds like a fun idea

And there's parks with built in grills, but folks would need to agree to buy and bring stuff and that may be tricky!

If you guys can to come to flushing meadow park, I will bring all the bbq gears. Just bring some meat and pineapple pizza.

I would do Brooklyn Bridge Park but there is no parking.

I have been to Flushing Meadow Park a few times with my ex, but god damn is it a pain in the ass to get to if you do not have a car.

You had me at pineapple pizza. Flushing Meadows Park on a Saturday is a quite trek for many of us! I feel like we would have to make a Google doc/list of who brings what. Costco/Target would be ideal for that. Booze would have to be brought in and consumed discretely. Heck, if that's a massive pain in the ass, I've been itching to go a Korean BBQ place again. I can eat bulogi, pork belly, and kimchi with beer or soju all day.

Me trying to make up my mind on what to do on Saturday night:

If we have 2-3 cars, we can take turn and pick up the walking people from skyview mall. Parking inside the park is very easy.

Or from the 71st Av G/R/E/F train.

I haven't been in the area in almost a decade now. This weekend may be tough though. Been trying to come out for a while.
