NYT - Intercepted comms between Trump camp and Russia being reviewed

CNN update on this story:

US investigators are scrutinizing late December calls between Mike Flynn, President Donald Trump's national security adviser, and Russia's ambassador to the US as part of a broader counterintelligence investigation of Russian activities in the US, law enforcement and intelligence officials told CNN.

The calls were captured by routine US eavesdropping targeting the Russian diplomats, according to the intelligence and law enforcement officials. But the officials said some of the content of the conversation raised enough potential concerns that investigators are still looking into the discussions, amid a broader concern about Russian intelligence-gathering activities in the United States.

The officials all stressed that so far there has been no determination of any wrongdoing.

FBI and intelligence officials briefed members of the Obama White House team before President Barack Obama left office about the Flynn calls to the Russian ambassador, sources said.

In a statement Sunday night, a spokesman for Trump said the White House has "absolutely no knowledge of any investigation or even a basis for such an investigation."

WASHINGTON — American law enforcement and intelligence agencies are examining intercepted communications and financial transactions as part of a broad investigation into possible links between Russian officials and associates of President-elect Donald J. Trump, including his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, current and former senior American officials said.

The continuing counterintelligence investigation means that Mr. Trump will take the oath of office on Friday with his associates under investigation and after the intelligence agencies concluded that the Russian government had worked to help elect him. As president, Mr. Trump will oversee those agencies and have the authority to redirect or stop at least some of these efforts.

It is not clear whether the intercepted communications had anything to do with Mr. Trump’s campaign, or Mr. Trump himself. It is also unclear whether the inquiry has anything to do with an investigation into the hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computers and other attempts to disrupt the elections in November. The American government has concluded that the Russian government was responsible for a broad computer hacking campaign, including the operation against the D.N.C.

I could be wrong, but I don't think being arrested would mean Trump isn't still President. I don't think he stops being President until he dies, chooses to step down, is impeached, or his term ends. Realistically, if he were arrested, he would almost certainly be impeached, though if they never impeached him, I think he could be President from prison.

I think the only benefit, and this is a very big "what-if", is that if the bombshell that brings down Trump comes after gets in the Office it'll almost certainly cascade down and damage the entire Republican party.

House GOP refused to hold hearings on these connections in August. Dems were bringing this up at every opportunity. Shit Manafort resigned from Trump's campaign for his ties to Putin.
