Obi-Wan Disney+ series on (possibly indefinite) hold

Yet another Disney Star Wars debacle.

Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars series centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi has been put on hold as the companies attempt a retooling, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The effort, in which Ewan McGregor is set to reprise his role of the famed Jedi Knight, was in the throes of preproduction.

Sources tell THR that the scripts — only two were written — and story became an issue and that the entire package has been jettisoned. Lucasfilm is now on the hunt for a new writer to pen the series. At the same time, sources say the project is being reconfigured from six episodes to four.

Grace Randolph has been hearing about this for a while. Here's her take:

How does Kathleen Kennedy still have a job at Lucasfilm?

Ewan McGregor debunked this. Said they're filming in January, so it's not cancelled or on indefinite hold.

And there's a thread about this already:

Came to post this, hopefully just another nothingburger.

This series, if done correctly, would light the service on fire more than The Mandalorian ten fold.

And I rather enjoyed The Mandalorian.

Maybe KK should have read those scripts last year when she said they were ready to film.

Personally I don’t have an interest in this at all, the prequels and Clone Wars cover enough young Obi Wan for me.

I could see them announcing this as their 2022 movie, depends on how much they fucked up planning post ROS

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Mandalorian had a lot of spirit and I understand the money behind a Obi Wan series, I'm sure there're people who want that.

After the success of Mandalorian you'd think they know which direction to heed, now..

Probably had lots of woke shit in the script, and Iger said "NO!" cause Disney is tired of that shit and wants to earn money.

Grace is a fucking idiot with some kind of unhealthy obsessive hatred for Jessica Chastain.

Which was already discussed in that thread. The only reason for this thread seems to be to promote Grace Randolph's stupidity.

Dude, you were already "discrediting" Star Wars leaks that most of them ended up being true. Are you a marketer promoting and protecting the brand? :)

What the fuck is it with this place immediately trying to label someone as an "astroturfer" if they're trying to stop the spread of FUD on this place and prevent this place from becoming another Era where people latch onto bullshit clickbait just for outrage? That's a bullshit bit of console warring that started in the gaming side and is a fucking cancer that needs to be eliminated from this place. But fuck me for trying to improve the discourse here and try to point out how people shouldn't believe bullshit clickbait made up to get outrage clicks/YouTube views from people. It's like some people here WANT to believe the bullshit, but not the real stuff for reasons unknown.

Means fuck all until we see it. Exibit A - The Rian Johnson Trilogy

So the star of the show debunking a story and saying they're still filming in January and that the airdate didn't change at all means nothing and we should believe grifters yelling into their webcam for monetized views. Ok.

No, it just means don't immediately side with the multinational that has a track record of lying through it's arse about anything and everything when it comes to this acquisition.

I will definitely be watching Obi-Wan. To be honest, he wouldn't be my first choice for a series though. Maybe because I saw way too much of him in clone wars. I would have preferred more expanded universe stuff. Mandalorian was fresh because we haven't heard much of that story at all.

You'll get that when Project Luminous kicks off. They're revealing it next month. Basically it's like the new Shadows of the Empire with books, comics, games, etc all in a new setting (maybe High Republic).

when he says they are still filming in January, does he mean NEXT January? ie January 2021?

cos that is the only way it would make sense, given that they have to find new writers. unless Mana is saying that is fake too.

i don't really get it. Mando was decent but people aren't going so wait around for a full year for the next season. i thought this show would drop in the meantime to fill in the gaps but apparently they haven't even started filming. then it's only going to be 4 episodes in the end anyways, how it that supposed to justify subscribing to a service?

I'm a little more bias, admittedly since Obi-Wan is probably my favorite character in the SW universe.

Yes he says next January and the airdate doesn't change.

“I think we start shooting early next year as opposed to summer this year. I think the scripts are great. They’re in really good shape. They want them to be better. I think we keep our same airdate. All good.”

I think that’s decently likely. It’s on hold while they look for new writers, but maybe not on indefinite hold yet. I think the timeline is probably a bit scrambled at this point, especially if the crew had to be let go for lack of anything to do.

since they start filming next Jan and there is a SW scheduled for 2022 i would not be surprised if this gets turned back into a movie and they go back on their "no spinoffs" rule.

All future SW movies are spinoffs. They're not doing trilogies anymore. They're all going to be set in the same era but there won't be connected trilogies anymore. Stuff dealing with characters from the three trilogies will be on D+ as series.

Oh fuck off with this bullshit. You were quite literally the only person who swooped in to protect the brand in that silly John Boyega thread I made.

-protects Disney brands at every conceivable opportunity-
'guize im just trying to improve the discourse'

Gee, I wonder why people think that you're an astroturfer....

Fine. I won't post here anymore if people think I'm an astroturfer.

Look man, I'm not telling you to leave the forum. I'm telling you that you need to reflect on the fact that you protect Disney brands at every opportunity, even in obviously silly situations like the Boyega thread. Your actions are the reason why some people think that way.

I don't just protect Disney. It's all bullshit clickbait. Just this place has a hard on for crazy YouTube Disney Conspiracy theories. It's any bullshit clickbait as I deal with that shit every waking hour of the day. DC, Marvel, Star Wars, movies, etc. YouTube, WeGotThisCovered, CosmicBookNews, BoundingIntoComics, CBR, etc. All bullshit clickbait and people here don't want to hear it so it's ASTROTURFER! PAID MARKETER! SHILLLLL! (ironic as "shill" is what the people pushing the conspiracy theories say to call anyone who tries to debunk them).

If GAF wants to signal boost bullshit, that's on the them. But it makes this place look bad if someone looks at the forum and sees a bunch of threads pushing bullshit clickbait like it's real.

I'm not seriously accusing you of anything, come on. However, you always have these extreme reactions and calling every news reporter that doesn't agree with you "stupid idiots" and you rant, get angry and the likes, when you have been wrong in the past. I mean, I believe you have sources, but just because you do, it doesn't mean the information they are providing you makes sense. For example, here, you say Ewan McGregor debunked this, but iirc, watching the video he says this off the cuff while walking on the red carpet during a premiere that it's just delayed a bit, then mentions the scripts are great but that they want to make them better.

Applying a bit of critical thinking, you don't start the production, which costs a lot of money, only to dismantle it shortly after and release the workers if the scripts just need a bit of polishing. I mean, I don't take what the "stupid idiots screaming at the mic" say to be gospel either, but using a bit of critical thinking, I believe the screaming youtubers might be more in the right than the corporation that is all about protecting its image.

And honestly, in this internet age, a lot of places rely on the outrage clickbait. Mainstream news sites come up with the most ridiculous shit woke news pieces to generate outrage clicks, and these youtube "streamers" report on them to achieve the same. Take in the information, apply critical thinking, avoid obvious clickbait and move on with your life.

It's just movies buddy. :)

i dont have a problem with any of it. especially clickbait.

i do have a problem with "This is false news and toxic you are giving license to the alt right!" freakout takes that treats any and all rumors as some insidious plot from the right wing. it's at that point where someone is a shill to me.

IMO rumors and gossip is just a healthy part of consuming media, and is encouraged in every enertainment field. the rush to paint any and all rumors as "toxic" is unhealthy gatekeeping IMO. if you have the correct information, then post it. there is nothing wrong with wanting daily entertainment news or exploring gossip. popular tv shows like Entertainment Tonight and The Soup mined this exact territory for decades. it's just that now it is fans stepping up.

ironically, these "toxic youtube fans" probably give the franchise more coverage than the "non toxic" ones who spend all day on Twitter reposting the same dozen memes and bad faith takes over and over in a misguided attempt to highlight toxicity.
All bullshit clickbait and people here don't want to hear it so it's ASTROTURFER! PAID MARKETER! SHILLLLL!
you can call it bullshit, just dont complain when people call you out. what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

oh no it "makes this place look bad"? lol. to whom? do i need to worry about someone looking down on me? because i watched a youtube video? because i watched an entertainment gossip video? LOOOOOL

Fat chance. The MCU is becoming even more woke so expect SW to follow.

Anyways McGregor apparently shot down this rumor about the show on hold.

I don't get why we need a series on Obi during his hiding on Tatooine. Seems pointless. I like to think he spent most of his time in isolation, meditating and communing with Quite-Gone Gin.

They should never have hired the writer they did at first anyway, wasn't it that idiot who wrote Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close? How exactly does tripe like that qualify you for Star Wars?

Seriously, they keep hiring these embarrassing writers for huge tentpole movies who have track records like "I wrote The Twilight Saga Eclipse: Part 2" and "I wrote X-Men Origins Wolverine." It's ridiculous.

He doesn't have any fucking sources. He was here, screaming about YouTubers and rumours about RoS being wrong, and in the end they were right. Complete fucking silence from MB after that.

He just gets upset when people don't post positive news and positive rumours.

You'll get that when Project Luminous kicks off. They're revealing it next month. Basically it's like the new Shadows of the Empire with books, comics, games, etc all in a new setting (maybe High Republic).

Defending Disney at all costs and getting angry over YouTubers and fansites?

Running entertainment websites and breaking news. Won't post my whole resume, but I ran IGN DVD, worked for Blizzard and Sony, then ran entertainment sites. Not just Disney. WB/DC as well.

that is your fan theory. sadly, fan theories are no longer accepted. pls look forward to the official version to replace your previous hopes and dreams and a world where everyone will mock you for ever engaging in your imagination in the first place. /s

the reason "why" we have any of this is money. they bought the license to print SW products in mass, that is what they are doing. they are leveraging their assets. making new characters and stories is not why they bought SW, they want to mass produce copies of the movies they purchased. endless nostalgic cash grab.

storywise it is pointless to ask "why" for any of the post-2012 content. the reason is a meta one: promote the brand & leverage OT assets. it is just recently they realized many people actually like the PT and are courting that market. of course they are doing it in the slowest, fumbliest way possible bc they have a property so easily marketable they can do their jobs in their sleep.
