Granted, both images look pretty lousy because of the image quality.. but the downgraded effects is pretty apparent.

No, it's because they removed some of the shadows and shaders from the second version just to have an optimized version to show off. Or it's on a low-end PC. I've heard both versions. All I know is, the devs confirmed that it will look closer to your first picture.

It would really be nice if Bethesda would release a few shots from the current (presumably 99% final) build to clear the air here, one way or another.

The gamma in the German PC Gamer looks really f***ed up. I wouldn't use any of their pics as a representation of what the game will look like.

More like - it was never meant to look as in the first pic.

From what I gathered (SteveMeister correct me if I'm wrong) the game DID look like on the first pic with self-shadowing and shadowing on all objects - characters, buildings and items (chairs, tables, clothes, apples, kinves etc.) but it chopped at ungodly 0.1 FPS on even the most ungodly PCs out there (not to mention the much weaker 360s).

So they took it out and left the shadows /-ing only on characters.

If I am lying then please correct me MrSmileyFaceDude.
Wait a second. This can't be true! I'm sure many of you own or have downloaded the DVD with all the gameplay footage and a commentary by one of the developers. I have watched this thing over and over again and the first screenshot is definitely from that version of the game. It was running nowhere near 0.1 FPS though. While it wasn't the smoothest framerate I've ever seen, it sure looked playable!

That's why I asked for the dev to correct me - I don't like spreading lies.

They are both compressed grabs from videos. They obviously have different gamma settings, and are at different aspect ratios. The screenshot below is what that jail cell looks like in-game.

from recent cvg interview with Gavin Carter:

Will there be different features or limitations in the Xbox 360 version?

Gavin Carter:

We are working to make the two versions as close to identical as possible. The Xbox 360 version should be visually identical to a PC running with all the visual options turned to maximum. PC users will have more options to turn down certain visuals to better accommodate older hardware setups. The only thing the Xbox 360 version will lack is the Elder Scrolls Construction Set for modding. It simply isn't possible to offer on a console.

Fuck yeah baby.

SteveMeister. I have a 6800 GT with AMD 3200+.

I also have a 360 with an HDTV running at 720p.

Which version do you think would look best?

Which is more comfortable, your couch or your Desk Chair?

I've got nearly the same PC set-up as Doc, and I intend to get it for the 360 (Provided I find one by then) for the ability to sit on my couch and play on my HDTV which is quite a bit larger than my PC monitor. :)

Every time I see something on this game, I get more excited about it. I'm a long time fan of the Elder Scrolls games. Played Daggerfall and Morrowind to death. Oblivion looks great, just wish it had some multiplayer. Nothing major. Just four player online co-op in that huge world. :)

Xbox 360 has already been confirmed to have an offical mod the first day it is released.

Let's look at two important facts.
Xenon is a card generation ahead of the Geforce 7800 line.
x360 has three cores with 2 threads each. All of which have been confirmed to be used by Oblivion.
My wish has already come true.

I'm wondering though... why do you pc gamers keep pointing to mods for salvation? How about playing what's already in the game and exploring all the features and locales that Bethesda made themselves? As is, this game is so beefy that mods are simply fluff for later months anyway. There's no urgency for them right now. So why not play the game at the best possible optimization, which is on the x360, during your first-playthrough. If you don't have a x360, but do have a PC that can run it then go with that. However, if you own a decent PC and an x360, why ruin your first experience by going PC?

Why do you console gamers point to graphics as a salvation? Just turning it around on you, i don't like to generalize like you do.

Alot of mods aren't just adding locations, quests, items, npcs, graphical touches, enemies, cities, worlds, spells, events, and weapons. If morrowind is an indication, there's going to be many mods addressing things as game altering as overall difficulty.

You don't have to use them, but i wouldn't have enjoyed morrowind, freespace 2, total annihilation, halflife, doom, quake etc., half as much without the mods.
