While coal has its environmental issues, I don't disagree, left-wing support has traditionally come from workers in those industries. Remember, being on the left is about supporting workers. It's also quite common to see state support (if not outright ownership) of certain industries).

Not quite sure what you're on about re austerity, that's very much a right-wing shrink-the-government position, one to which I am strongly opposed. The current Tory government is engaged in ideological austerity and it's doing nothing but harm.

Shrinking support for social security, in particular health care, drastic lowering of taxes for the rich and big corporation (and thus diminishing the financial wiggle room for the state).

Those are policies I disagree with and have long disagreed with. The disappointment is that the Dems aren't much better. We do at least have, in the UK, an actual alternative. Btw your characterisation of Labour as centre-left is wide of the mark. They were under Blair, but under Corbyn they've moved further to the left economically. Under Blair Socialism was a dirty word, not so much under Corbyn. I don't particularly like the way he gained his position through entryism by hard-left types but I think he is generally an ok sort.

The head of a party is not the only one who decides where a party is positioned. Blair was a neoliberal, wholeheartedly. The neoliberal branch of Labour hasn't vanished, just because a clear left-leaning person is now head of Labour. I call them center-left because of the range they represent, from center-right (e.g. Blair) to clearly left (e.g. Corbyn).

@Yoshi - while the neoliberalists are still present, their voice is greatly diminished. A lot of Blairites have left, and the incoming MPs have, for the most part, been Corbynites.
When Labour gets to rule next time and I can observe what they actually do when in charge, I will reevaluate how I see them. As a Briton, you clearly have a better view of them, but I am sceptical about calling them a left party rather than a center-left party for now, because center-left parties tend to appear clearly left as long as they are not in charge and then when they win the election take a position much more closely aligned to neoliberalism.

I would imagine with Corbyn as PM and McDonnell as Chancellor (he's to the left of Corbyn) the big jobs are in the hands of proper socialists. Obviously the challenge is facing the markets but, just as many predicted meltdown with Trump's election and it didn't quite happen, the markets tend to cope OK once reality sets in.

“Thank you for patiently educating me” lol
Someone can't be geniunely serious when they write down ''Thank you for patiently educating me''. Or this guy is a literal cuck, and i hate using that word.

And again the classic mistake - Using Twitter for private thoughts when its a public outlet.

That's the whole reason any gaming related controversy occurs anyway - People shitout what they actually think and then forget that they are saying it in a public space.

So I've been hanging around Ree a bit
Hanging around is something i also would do if i were going to accept The Names policies, you get these tendencies, you see...
Shut up Yoshi this is what you call dark humor.
@Yoshi has a very current_year understanding of politics, almost as though nothing before 2008 ever happened.
current_year should be the new vis_name.

How and why do you “fund military service”? I don’t keep up with things, especially in the Crazy States, but last time I checked, the military paid you for your service. What’s up with this?

Bipolar disorder and Gender studies.

I jest ofcourse but i do an *eyeroll* at all those posts proclaiming OP to hang in there. Voicing support literally does not help anyone, actually helping him to get him to therapy does.

But since he already is going to therapy there its back to voicing support.

I dunno, i just find the combination of being bipolar and then deciding to do gender studies and mentioning this on a platform that is completely fixated on gender equality and mental health issues just a curious tale of multiple coincidences.

Also to get back to the USA Powerlifting topic:
''How can one conclusively dismiss the physiology debate when trans women athletes are breaking records left and right, all over the world?''

(This is the actual ban reason despite this image was not taken after that specific post. Goes to show how much copy-paste the ban reasons of The Names really are.)

Remember kids, staff is not there to educate you around these issues. You are just supposed to be at the right side of history and know the right answer, or you are transphobic.

I don't really see what's curious about the story. Could you elaborate on your thoughts a bit? The user is on a heap of meds for mood stabilization and anti-depression. They don't feel good and have traumatic baggage weighing on them. Recreational hard drug use is commonplace with Borderline and Bipolar folks since they're dealing with severe mood problems and often have reckless, self-destructive patterns. Gender studies is an...accommodating...major, and a magnet for troubled individuals.

It's an unfortunate story but if they're in therapy that's something at least.

I just find this whole ordeal too coincidental relative to the platform he is posting it on. The majority of his points really is utterly sad, but the whole ''i am doing gender studies'' bit is too coincidental considering.

It's kind of a bit crazy.
He outright condemns Gamergate and still people have fundamental issue with his talking about "ethics".

This suggests quite clearly that at least one of the purposes of the manufactured hysteria around GG was specifically to avoid investigation into, and discussion of, ethics in games journalism.

It's the only way you can explain "Gamergate was terrible but actually we do need to talk about ethics at some point" being met with "REEEEEEEEE Gamergate dog whistle".

Even when you are condemning GG, you are supporting GG.

How convenient for the people being criticized that they were able to whip up hysteria to distract from the criticism.
It's rather fortuitous for them that "criticism of us = support of harassment campaigns".
Wow, it's almost like they set up a situation where they are immune from criticism because their all of their critics come pre-smeared.

Associate hate & harassment with GG.
Associate criticism of game journos with GG.
Ta da! If you criticize us you are part of a hate group.

As Jason Schreier of Kotaku says: it's hard not to see The Escapist's "But why aren't we talking ethics in game journalism???" as a dog whistle for the worst people.

That's how you "poison the well" ladies and gents.

Ok I’m going to ask here, because of where this conversation is heading. What is the big plan here? When you enroll in college or university for a BA with a major in Gender Studies, what is the job you hope to get after Grad? What is going to pay the bills and pay back all that student debt with your Gender Studies degree?

I asked a few people in Sociology that question back when I was in College and none of them really gave me an answer. Now Sociology isn’t enough we have these specialized Soc classes that help us to get where?

As an aside to that, I also noticed on days when I’m home from work and watch daytime TV (I’m old, whatever) I noticed that every single student on The Price is Right is a Communications Major. What’s up with that? I suspect they all want to work in PR, but eventually you need people to make the stuff your company needs PR for. If everyone works in PR who does the work?

Also @Redneckerz did you lose a dog? Cuz I found this guy and he looks surprisingly like you.

There is a rule in Academia, "If they don't have a PhD, they aren't worth the time." I wouldn't be surprised if Gender Studies majors were where this rule was birthed.
Ooh birthed was a bad choice of words there, that gives it a feminine tone forced upon by the patriarchy, you probably would have just failed the class. (Perhaps next time give a more gender neutral answer, like “gave life”)

Birthed just sounds too much like vagina. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

First of all, doubt it is a good look going after a post about a person contemplating suicide.

I read the entire thread previous to this. I basically got from it that the person needs psychiatric help, but the person is refusing to get it themselves.

However, as far as the gender studies as choice, you have to understand the person was NOT in college prior to and supposedly only enrolled at the after advice from ResetERA which mindblowingly consisted of basically "you should quit your job and take out a 50 Thousand Dollar loan through a bank to go to school with". It was insanely crazy advice. If the person doesn't commit suicide now hopefully, there is a good chance when they have 50k in loans coming up for payment with massive amounts of interest that they cannot afford that they very well could.

So, now to the choice of class. Why do you think the person chose gender studies of all choices? (Hint: Probably because all the people pming him with help are from ResetERA and suggested it).

And, if I am right, it just goes to show that the platform is more concerned with advancing their beliefs than the person's life. When they should have been suggesting trade schools or such in the scenario, if you were gonna suggest any schooling at all, they pushed towards their advancement of beliefs.

I am actually surprised the thread hasn't been deleted because it seems like it could be a huge liability issue. Also, I wouldn't doubt if the user ends up banned at some point as they made it clear they weren't "getting" the course.

I agree with you but just want to note that I don’t think Red was making fun of the guy for his mental illness, rather he was giving the context before getting to the kicker which was that he took Resetera’s advice that a Gender Studies degree would be the panacea.

It appeared to me that Red was implying it could be fabricated because it was simply too convenient. I may have mistook it though.

All I wanted to know is what is the big job at the end of that degree? With an accounting degree, you become an accountant, with a PhD, you become a doctor. When you pass the Bar you become a lawyer.

What is the gender sciences? Or Gender studies job that you are attaining to when chasing that degree? Tell me about that big paying money job that only gender scienctists will get.

I suspect that Grievance Studies grads either go on to teach, take up a cushy Diversity Officer corporate role, or they infiltrate activist organisations like SPLC, White Ribbon, etc.

btw PhD doesn’t mean medical doctor.

Shhh, don’t tell everyone. I’m a PHD in Vagina stories, I listen to your vagina and then try to help it.

I got my credits from the PHD Vagina Factory in Philly.

You can’t say that degree is less real then these gender studies communication folks.

As a matter of fact maybe I listen to women better then these gender fluid ppl.

I hear women and what they want, you all jump on their party and hijack it for your wants.

I'm terrified everyday I go into work. I'm terrified to do the job. I've made this clear to management. I have symptoms similar to ptsd from years of working in very scary environments.

I was attempting to get an education. I fought for twelve long years to be able to find a job that allowed me to go to school.

Well, I'm going to lose my job.

I live paycheck to paycheck. I made a vow if I was homeless again I would kill myself. I'm 28.

Due to a very difficult life and several suicide attempts already I'm not really afraid anymore.

I'm going to go to the George Washington bridge and jump.

I have a therapist, a psychiatrist, and a counselor. So people can't say I didn't try.

I wrote a book I hope to post the day before I attempt.

If there was some alternate means, of taking out huge loans to fund education or military service I would take them.

I always come to this choice of suicide or an incredibly miserable life. Like I either have to be homeless or I have to fight for my life everyday at work.

I'm very tired. I have a little brother I'll be sad to leave, but I can't continue to fight anymore, to only experience suffering.

I managed one semester of school.
Community College, I took five classes and got five a's while working part time. I'm proud of that, but it's all I had left you know.''
''Thank you everyone. Suicide just makes sense for my life as I don't enjoy it much every since I was sexually assaulted, ever since I was homeless twice, ever since I cut myself everyday just to function while off medication. I used to go in and out of McLean hospital in Boston. I hate life.

I have a horrible family I hate. I like my brother but he has video games he really needs nothing from me.

I'm going home to start cutting myself. Come February it would have been a year since I stopped.

I also have borderline personality disorder.''

''I'm taking brexiprazole 3mg, 45mg remeron,.1mg clonodine, and I take 4mg of cyproheptadine whenever I start to panic but it doesn't always work.

I don't want to talk or reach out I just feel so tired I want to just die.

Yesterday I had another nosebleed at work. I have anemia.

I'm going to walk to the bridge. It's going to be a very hard walk.

I want it to be over so bad.''

''I have a family that tortured me for twenty years. It's not a family you know.

I fought really hard to be independent.

I fuck up now with school and work I'm just fucked.

I don't want to talk at all. I'm going to go home and get ready for class tomorrow.

But I really want to die so bad. Maybe I'll just do all this coke I bought.

I'm going to get ds and f's but I'm going to die like the piece of shit I am.

People sure do get cold when they think somethings wrong.

I almost cried in class. People just watch and laugh.''

''I was studying gender studies. It's so weird, they come up with all these really weird ways to make it hard. Like I have to do a few of these strange things I'm not even sure how to do for a few chapters and I just don't have time to read everything. ''
So a guy with bipolar disorder who was sexually assaulted in his past, with a load of coke, doing gender studies. For some reason the last part struck me as curious: Gender Studies.

I don't know what to make of it other than that's a weirdly conflicted and fucked up situation. I am also geniunely at odds if this bloke is serious or not given his statements. Was posted Jan 14 but nearly a month later OP is still here.
Sorry, within the context of this thread, where often fun is made of Resetera posters, and where we as outstanders couldn't help the troubled individual at all, I find this posting in bad taste. We should not make other people's suffering our gossiping topic.

All I wanted to know is what is the big job at the end of that degree?
Scientist (in the gender sciences), diversity officer (you need a lot of those), politics (not primarily as politicians, but as policymakers / advisors), book author, journalist.

You are an enigma, @Yoshi. Logical (at least trying to be) and pedantic to a fault but then still believing that rubbish like gender studies qualifies as a science. I don’t get you, man.
It is what it is classified as, no? Of course it is not comparable to math / cs / physics / chemistry / biology, but if other branches of sociology are regarded as science, why would I leave out gender studies? Because I do not agree with the methods and a portion of the claims made? I will question questionable scientific conduct, as I have done, by the way in the topic about the hoax publications, but arbitrarily denying the classifier of scientist for the job as scientist at a university just does not appear right to me. The only thing I do that to is theology and even then, in a list of potential jobs, I would probably still have called it scientist.

Not where I’m from. Nothing ending with Studies is a science, otherwise they would call it Gender Science.

Maybe that is a cultural difference then. I know that just "science" often is used in English to only refer to natural and structural sciences (which I would be fine with by the way), but the usage of scientist was a bit more liberal in my observation. In German, the word "Wissenschaftler" (which is the literal translation of scientist) refers to all fields of research universities offer, including even theology.

He sure is testing me in the AOC thread though.
You better work on your performance, today may be the fabled judgment day @CatholicGamerGuy is looking forward to!

They are theologists though.

Tbh I don't think sociology and related subjects should be classified as science, and I would add psychology to that mix (hi I've got a BSc in psychology mixed with some other humanities junk - I corrected that by getting an MSc in computery things). Given none of those subjects can produce a reproducible experiment to save their lives, due to the impossibility of isolating data sufficiently to actually perform an experiment (human beings are so complex as to make it a nightmare of extra variables, groups of humans are even worse). Science should be restricted to that which follows the scientific method of experiments which anyone can follow and reproduce to a near-guaranteed and agreed result.

Sociology is in the list and if you click on sociology, you see that it lists the subfield gender. Both in the list on the right and in the explanation: "The different traditional focuses of sociology include social stratification, social class, social mobility, religion, secularization, law, sexuality, gender, and deviance. "
Categorise it however your excessively ordered German brain needs to. It’s not a science because it doesn’t adhere to the scientific method.

The robot impression at 1:20, that’s you.

Experiments are the method of empirical sciences, but mathematics and (theoretical) computer science do not allow for experiments, in fact, if you were to make a mathematical statement, justified by experimental data, you would have a hard time getting that published*. Would you still classify mathematics and theoretical computer science as sciences? What I want to say with this (I assume you answer to the previous question is a clear yes) is, that different levels of formality of sciences allow for different levels of certainty and rigorisity. It is important keep in mind the different levels of reliability of the results though - basically
- structural / formal sciences: If no errors occured 100% certainty
- natural sciences: very reliable for the specific phenomena investigated, but uncertainties arise when the theory is applied to related phenomena (though this is of course related to the important technique of falsification)
- humanities: Spotty, because it relies on individual and cultural backgrounds, so meta studies play an important role here, almost comparable to falsification. Only by looking at enormous data sets analysed under different angles can one receive reasonable certainty (which is why linking a single study in social sciences is hugely problematic)
- theology: It is all hogwash because it is based on a false premise about an objective truth.

* The exception is talking about usefullness of a mathematical theory in an applicational field.

Mathematics is mathematics and no, computer stuff isn't science. Simple. Over-use of the label of 'science' and the expectations that go with it, and the kudos that goes with it, have given credence to some absolute shit-shows, employment psychology being one of my pet peeves.

Re theology - I'd argue that's more study of mythology than anything else, with a side-order of philosophy and history (as it's useful to think of the times in which things happened or are purported to have happened so as to understand its full context).

EDIT: Adjustment in bold to make the meaning clearer.
