Messofanego:
"When you got extreme right transphobes being happy with the advertising and playing into the cis gaze of trans porn fantasy where the penis works just like a cis man, gender binary character customisation, no positive trans or genderqueer character shown yet, a faction called "Animals" being predominantly black people and black accents being made fun of, it's hard to give CD Projekt Red the benefit of the doubt on social commentary. It doesn't seem the developer had trans consultants. I don't see the punk.

Even if the ad is supposed to depict a trans woman or a trans femme in good faith, it’s terribly inaccurate in a way that furthers harmful stereotypes already existing in our society. Many trans women cannot maintain erections thanks to hormone replacement therapy, while others can only become somewhat stiff for a short period of time without erectile dysfunction medication. Yet cis people generally assume trans women’s penises operate like cis men’s until proven otherwise. That stigma is only further reinforced by cis male-centric porn, which expects trans models to use their penises in a way that operates exactly like cis men’s dicks.

In other words, the ad reflects cisgender peoples’ current conceptions of trans bodies, so for most cis players, the satire doesn’t land. And it calls into question whether CD Projekt Red ever intended the ad to be satirical in the first place. Right-wing gamers clearly didn’t think so. Over on 4chan’s /pol/, one user posted the ad and proudly declared Cyberpunk 2077 “/ourgame/,”implying the title’s politics align with the site’s far-right beliefs. And on Gamergate subreddit r/KotakuInAction, users praised the joke and belittled its critics"

It must be a strange position to hold.

In a sense the existence of a "trans porn fantasy" within society hints at an underlying willingness to drop transphobia altogether. People who are looking at trans porn and thinking "this is fucking hot" are probably keeping that to themselves due to societal pressures.

I mean, there are plenty of ugly ass, out of shape, bad attitude, women around and a lot of trans-women who put a ton of time and effort and money into their appearance. So wouldn't it be cool if people were more willing to publicly appreciate those trans ladies?

Sure, it might be shallow as fuck but it would seem like an absolutely massive step towards acceptance.

No. Because that would be Cis people getting something.

Thing is though, if you want to have acceptance of Trans people in society and you want to gain allies then you have to actually get Cis people on board somehow.

It would seem that something as basic as people being able to say "OK I am actually attracted to some trans-women" would be an overall win for the trans community.

Rather than some fat-ass in a pink t-shirt in a wig roaring at you about "cis privilege" and then demanding you be an ally, wouldn't it actually be better to see a sexualized trans character in a game and think "holy crap that's hot"?

Maybe it is a harmful stereotype though. Just on the face of it the message "trans women can be as sexually attractive as cis women and in many cases can be more attractive than the average cis woman" seems like it would do more good than harm. At least for getting over the initial hurdle of acceptance.

It's like they can't win.

We accept that, for the most part, cis models tend to be what we would consider traditionally attractive.
Instagram, Snapchat etc it tends to be those stereotypically attractive women that make it big.

So a developer decides "let's use a trans person in our fictional advertisement".
And they think well it needs to be something that looks good and interesting and, just like regular advertising, sexy.

No no no. Says this dipshit, Messofanego on ResetEra.
Trans people CAN'T be represented by models like Cis people are.
It has to be realistic.
What does that even really mean?

Edit: I decided that using the photo I used was maybe a bit mean, actually.

My point would just be that if we did have a future where Trans-people were accepted as models in adverts etc then I would ABSOLUTELY be the best looking and most attractive people that would be selected, just as it is now with Cis people.

If a part of our future culture was to have prominent Trans models with an actual focus on their "assets" then for sure you would get edgy advertising that would focus on whatever they've got going on down there.

No way the Monster Energy Drinks of 2077 are going to have Plain Jane #92345 as the face of their product. Regardless of whether she is trans or not.

The model of the future ladies and gents.

Or would this also cause outrage?
Isn’t Messofanego the guy whose parents bought him a mail order bride? If it’s the same dude I’m thinking of, he’s the ultimate currycel.

Also I’m pretty sure 4chan calling it their game has more to do with their trap fetish than anything else 😂

"Transphobic" -- like most of their other doublespeak words -- translates to "leverage over others" in their brains. The details beyond that are immaterial.

User banned (duration pending): Internalized racism, downplaying bigotry, history of similar behavior.
Don't we have a thread for this?

Adverts NSFW!

And it starts. LRG is mostly known for releasing digital only games physically but usually not for bigger companies that can handle it themselves. This choice they made to give in the Era's reactionary and childish behavior will cost them deals with other companies as they've shown distrust. You NEVER give in the slippery slop of these people. They embody get woke go broke. In this case, LRG wasn't even getting woke.

I only looked at the last page. Why am I not surprised that Era turned a thread about some Twitch streamer into a thread about racism.

AA uses the word God so of course it's a horrible brainwashing program that is no good, rather than something that has legit saved the lives of millions of people

what is bigger: Era's hate boner against Christianity? or against white men?

Whether it has saved lives or not, you don't see a problem with sending someone to a religious organization that is a different religion? Do you think it is appropriate to send a Muslim to AA? There are non-religious alternatives out there that are just as effective.

Freedom of religion is a right for every citizen of the United States. The state forcing someone through a program that’s inherently religious is against this core right. It is absolutely something that should be challenged and the complaint is absolutely valid. It’s insane to me how Canada, as progressive as it is made out to be, would let this shit fly. Like, this really surprised the heck out of me.

Yep. No bone to pick with Era on that one. That's a clear violation of church and state and why courts generally order people to find a program and complete a certain number of days without mandating a specific program as many like AA are tied to a certain religion.

I’ve never understood why finding God needs to be part of the recovery process in Canada.

It seems all (or most anyway) have it as in inclusion in 1 of the steps. It seems like it might actually discourage some of the people that could use the help, and stop them from seeking it out.

It's similar in the US. Unfortunately a lot of charities are religious in nature and have a side motive of using their services to help their missionary duties of converting people to their faith. There are good non-religious options out there, but they can be harder to find outside of big cities, and even in big cities can be too far away for people who need services to get to easily around their work and life schedules (especially people without cars). In any case, court orders shouldn't mandate attendance in specific programs when so many are religious. Just order attending in meetings/completing programs and give people a list of eligible agencies that MUST include secular organizations/groups.

The person who created the “Smash is 40% homophobic” thread requested a ban. :messenger_dizzy:

Getting a mod to ban 25 people is not good enough. All the male feminists in that thread about female characters not wearing pants are crying about her leaving.
Aww, that's disappointing.

It may have helped people, but at the same time, if it hinges on a superstition you do not share, its use for you specifically may be much less significant - or it may even be counterproductive, because you associate the pathway to soberness with religiosity on top. I think the person has a good point and it should not be enforced upon him to use a religious method to deal with his addiction.

I'm finally done over there and back here for good and requested account deletion as I don't even want anonymously associated with that place anymore. That CDPR thread is just too much. As I said in my last post in it, I'm fully for equality, but that doesn't mean a censored world where no one is ever offended by art. Fuck hate speech and attempts to incite violence of course, but art is also going to use tropes and other things deliberately to offend as it's meant to evoke emotions of offense/revulsion/disgust as it's showing how fucked up things are (or can be in cases of depictions of dystopias like cyberpunk).

The gaming side here is much better and more active since I was last here (dmaul1114, opted for a new user name and merger which EviLore thankfully okayed when I decided to comeback as I'm sick of the old user name I made back in the late 90s). Going to mostly stay away from this thread and off topic and totally out of politics this time though as too much stuff there triggers me here and I just want to talk games and the gaming forum here is far better than over there! I'll just use subreddits for the niche stuff that gains no traction here. Cheers all!

Off topic can be fun sometimes, but avoid politics at all costs.

Splitting it off into its own subforum was one of the best decisions they made for this site.

Dear Era, I've been orbiting a girl I know for a while now. I've been a good white knight, providing both cash and prizes for her.
The other night, after plying her with alcohol, I was about to make a "power play" when she cock blocked me, and told me I was ugly.
So I have a question for the relationship experts here: Why is this girl a cunt?

It is very non denominational. It says “God” and “a higher power” but pretty much leaves it as that. I figure that can be used for just about any religion and/or interpreted by atheists who don’t have a stick up their ass.

Most religions I’ve found are ok with the term “God”. No I don’t see a problem with it.

I dont know what the hell has happened over there, but this E3 has really made that site collectively show it is ass. Its been bad for a while but normally the insanity is locallised in one or two threads at most. I know "oppression olympics" can be often demonised as right-wing dog whistle, but look at this shit.

Its really felt like they have been falling over themselves to feel offended. Its nonsensical.

Atheists also have constitutional protections and shouldn’t be able to be ordered by the government via court orders to attend a religious program even if non-denominational/generic in referral to god/higher power.

Even ignoring constitutionality, there are questions of effectiveness for people very anti religion. They are probably unlikely to find faith that helps them stay sober as they’re likely to be off out by the whole thing. I certainly would be as someone with zero respect for religion/spirituality. I don’t look down on those who do, it will just never have any sway or validity to me.

I imagine the outrage uptick is just a function of E3 bringing a lot of the keyboard warriors who rarely/never play games out of the woodwork to spew their shit.

I’m not familiar with the far right gaming forums/subreddits but I’d be surprised if they didn’t see an uptick I outrage posts too.

The irony is the lunatics on both sides often seem outraged for different reasons at the same time and often about the same general thing. That’s what happens when you have an extremist worldview divorced from reality.

Im gonna be honest, I was around when the whole femme frequency shit went down. Apart from the fact I felt the woman was a grade 10 grifter, who profited from a wave of cut rate online feminists, I think for the most part she and her content was fine. Her opinions were somewhat fair, it wasnt being shoved in your face and the only people who really had a problem with it were people who would had a problem with any woman speaking up about anything.

what we have today is an entire forum of professional victims, who think the entire gaming industry must cater to them, include them, respect them and chase their admiration. They feel their emotions are the only currency that should influence any decision, and place direct responsibility on everyone else for their mental health.

These people can barely fuction online, never mind in the real world.

Compared to that, Sarkeesian is such small potatoes, she barely registers on their radar. In fact, I dont even think she has been mentioned there this entire week.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty far -right sexist, homophobic, transphobic blah blah trolls out there, but thats not what has been on resetera this past week and a bit.

Its been the most exceptional of the exceptional melting down continously and anyone with a hint of critical thinking, logic and plain common sense being banned to apease them.

I see a different contributing cause to current year craziness. While I can see the logic of what you say, I don't think it is the biggest contributor to craziness. I think what you are proposing can explain some societal trends like single motherhood and increasing male depression. I don't think it explains the normalization of previously extremely fringe ideologies.

For that I point to the internet in general and social media in particular. I believe social media has broken society's corrective tools of shame, guilt, and banishment. There was a clown world news story about how medical textbooks are signs of the patriarchy because male bodies are over represented in the graphics, and that medical textbooks need to be redone. I can honestly tell you of my entire real world acquaintance group I don't think a single person: liberal, progressive, conservative, or libertarian would agree with the premise of that news story. If I consistently brought up trivial stuff like that and railed against the patriarchy, I would eventually be shunned by my peer group.

What happens now in the modern era? There are incredibly small minority groups that would have no chance of forming if I had to physically find like minded people who are able to number in the millions because there are a couple of billion internet users. If I am into zoosexuality (used to have a different term for this less than 3 months ago), I can find a peer group that affirms that I am just expressing a kink and I am a good person. I can escape the shame and banishment that would occur in the real world and find validation for myself. That is an extreme example, but let us just take liberal vs. conservative on the US political spectrum. In the real world, I have to deal with liberals, progressives, environmentalists on a daily basis. My job pushes me to interact with these viewpoints so I gain some understanding, even if I don't agree. But if my life were primarily online, I can easily insulate myself from rational interaction with an opposing viewpoint and just live in an echo chamber that unequivocally says I am a good person just because I espouse the right viewpoint, and everyone else is evil. I will also get pseudo love from the other people in that echo chamber, that will fill a void for affection if such a void exists. The more I align with that echochamber, the more love and validation I will get.

Because the internet opens us up to an almost infinite range of viewpoints, society no longer naturally forces viewpoint alignment through scarcity. I have a limited number of family, so if I want their affection I need to maintain some common ground with them. Same with finding friends in my real world peer group. But when I open up my peer group to 100s of millions, well, what need I to form a consensus perspective with a majority of my neighbors.

This new (bare in mind im comparing it to the old GAF) rule that you cant edit after 5 minutes is shit. I always like to reedit my posts if I notice typos or if I have another related thought to what I was discussing. Who thought up that clunker of a rule?

If you have an old account that was banned for an invalid reason )or self requested ban) you can PM EviLore and ask him to merge your new account with this one if your old one had member status. Otherwise just keep posting until you get promoted (I forget the time and number of posts required).

This is exactly it.

There is plenty on resetera, I dislike even actively hate, but I joined there because being around people you dont agree with is supposed to be part of life. You are supposed to be challenged on your views, thats how you grow as a person.

The social media revolution has really allowed people to create their own special ecochambers and talk down anyone who wont tow the party line. But where that has been a thing since the sites inception, its becoming increasingly more frenzied and radicalised. The sad thing is, in isolation, with a calm mind, alot of what they are complaining about is somewhat reasonable.

Yes, it would be nice to have a diverse set of characters in gaming.
Yes trandgender people have the right to exist, not to be disrespected or fetished.
Yes, you should be able to have same sex relationships in games if you want.

etc etc etc etc

but its the absolute vitrol that is on these forums that is concerning. We will start seeing the rise of femcels in 5 or so years. Extremsim breed violence every single time. People need to see the patterns they are feeding.

makes sense, fair enough.

Honestly, in regards to my old account, im not trying to be active on forrms like that anymore. I asked for my account to be closed on era because I was posting too much and the same thing would happen if I came back here properly on my old account. At my age, I should be spending my time more constructively than discussing videogames with a bunch of strangers (no offense intended to anyone).

I just found this E3 so mind bogglingly insane I had to discuss it somewhere (anyone I mention this stuff to IRL looks at me as if ive grown another head)

I feel you there. I asked for bans there and here and some other places this spring as I was feeling the same.

Eventually wanted them back (just here and there) and did a much better job of posting and reading less. I’ve been on a binge lately due to E3 coinciding with ending a bit laid up recovering from surgery last Friday, but will soon be back to just posting about games I’m playing and looking forward to and nothing else.

I appreciate your counter points, but passively aggressively snipping a post that had a lot of thought put into it and labelling it a "wall of text" isn't the best way to start a conversation. When the forum software snips quotes more than a few sentences long automatically, it just comes across as a lazy dismissal. I suspect that wasn't your intention, but probably something to consider next time.

I have previously commented on the influence of social media and the general lack of shame in modern culture here and here (wall of text warning). I think that the framing of all insults as a social pathology rather than corrective social forces is part of the problem with the lack of shame, and the anti-bullying movements have created more problems than they have solved. Tinkering with evolved behaviors always has unintended consequences. Moreover, the helicopter / participation parenting methods of the last few decades have created a narcissism crisis such that many young people are just incapable of undergoing the process of introspection and behavioral adjustment that corrective social forces are supposed to initiate. I agree with you that social media is a cause, but I don't think it's the root cause. If we imagine a scale of current year craziness of arbitrary length, say 1-5, where we are currently at step 4, I would place social media at step 2 or 3. The ideas at the root of the current year craziness already existed in academia long before the advent of social media, which simply acted as the conduit for them to infect the news and entertainment media and subsequently the culture.

Imagine that a world war breaks out tomorrow with America up against an alliance of Russia and China -- a genuine existential threat. Do you believe that we will still be fretting about fraudulent pay gap statistics or which gender little Johnny wants to be tomorrow? Do you think that this will increase the demand for masculine protection as I defined it? Would the reduced supply of males who perished in providing the protection have flow-on effects that would influence the economics, both social and financial, of production and provision?
