Official God of War: Chains of Olympus Thread

This is my first God of War, and I've just gotten to the Caves. (Full disclosure: I'm a lapsed gamer who likes to check games out, but don't play them to full completion.)

So far my impressions are that the first stage was very fun, but the rest has been quite boring. The first stage felt like a beat'em up, and I wish there was more of that. I don't like dark, lonely hallways with obvious puzzles - I feel they should leave that stuff for Resident Evil or Zelda.

I guess I was expecting more action...

Every time I pushed square, square, triangle Kratos would just do the launch combo. It was maddening, I was certain that was the combo--square, square, triangle--you need to use to break armor but I just kept going into the launch and getting my ass smacked right down by the shield toting baddies. Maybe I just had a brain fart, whatever. Triangle three times, L plus triangle three times (4th or 5th Chaos Blades upgrade), the
Guantlet of Zeus
and Efreet all did the trick and I'm well past that point.

Apparently I'm in the home stretch and all I can say is this game is fucking amazing. The folks out at Ready at Dawn should be damn proud of themselves. It doesn't feel like any compromises have been made in bringing the God of War experience to a handheld. I'm just amazed that this is a PSP game.

Based on the ballance of previous GoW games, I'd be extremely surprised if you don't get tons more action very soon. I don't know how far you are into the game, but usually the pacing goes like:

lots of fighting -> a bit of platforming -> lots of fighting -> a bit of puzzle solving ... repeat.

Also, if previous GoW game is to go by, puzzles will get tougher, more elaborate and more rewarding later on. Having physical puzzles like they do is actually one of my favorite aspects of the series. Not many games do it nowadays, and RE series doesn't even come close to the quality of puzzles in GoWs.

I would guess that in your effort to be SURE you did the combo you were pressing extra special hard on the triangle so the game thought you were holding it down.

Holding down triangle in almost any point of combo's will transition you directly into the launcher.

Just received my games yesterday, yes!. I wanted to say that when i went by Best buy today to pre-order crisis core, i checked to see if they had god of war for the psp and they were sold out. I asked the clerk and he say they completely sold their shipment of the game. I'm glad this is selling well same with patapon.

Not sure if this has been spotted yet, but I'm on my 2nd run through god mode and found a little spot fairly early in the game that allows you to get as many red orbs as you'd like. (Checked an old save on a different difficulty, and it worked as well, so it's not a one-time occurance.)

Right where you set the corpse down on the button to open the door, there is a hallway between the door that opens and the circular room with the save point. Go through the hallway and into the circular room, and then run back down the hallway to the door that opened initially. You should hear the door slowly open (it closes when you run into the save room, I'm guessing, as some benefit to the way the game loads data) and ~12 orbs will come from the right side of the screen.

Once you understand how it works/how far you have to creep into the circular room before the door 'closes' again, you can pretty much hug the left wall and run back and forth between the save room and door... takes about 2 seconds to get 12 orbs at a time.

:lol

The Challenge mode is evil. I still can't beat the 5th (last) one. After the wave of Medusas, how much longer is there (I assume a lot)? I hate when those bitches gang up, freeze you, and the fire guards smash you.

The rest of the challenges were hard, but I eventually found nice repeatable patterns to get through.

Got the game in the mail today.

Played through the first section and I've just encountered my first undead (twin blade) warriors. How you see the soul or general ghast or whatever rip apart from the body when they're hit.. so awesome.

I forget I think it goes,
hoplite -> hoplite / harpy -> hoplite / gorgon -> Cyclops -> hoplite / gorgon -> hoplite / harpy -> hoplite

Roll Cancelling is your friend

I'm pretty far in...probably close to the end. I just reached
Persephone's castle. I just passed the rooms where they throw like 4-5 huge enemies at you and a bunch of annoying flying things.
What I've enjoyed about the game is that it's definitely tough (I'm playing on whatever the hard mode is) but it never feels cheap.

Just dropping in to say I finished. Took me about
6.25h
. I loved the final antagonist. I also thought that using
the circle button pounding as a metaphor for pushing away Calliope
was brilliant. I love the storyline of all the GoW games and this one comes in squarely between GoW1 and GoW2 in terms of characterization, storytelling, and memorable scenes.

Oh, and the graphics were good. As was the combat. And
not-overplayed nudity
.

On to the challenges!

I guess I just have a really, really manly thumb flark.

Beaten on Hero, now all I need to know is how do I use
The Spud of War
? Is there a certain point after you start up a new game where this becomes available?

I've been working on God mode on and off. I'm always so slow about it in this series as I'll only advance to the next 1 to 2 save points before taking a break on this difficulty. It keeps it from getting too frustrating in case I end up in a bad situation. That said,
Sun shield
obtained so I should be able to cruise for a while.

Restart on the same difficulty and you should get the costume options.

Punishment for being weaksauce
like me!
As the fight progresses you'll get checkpoints midway so its not as painful.

I rented this last night. Sat in my chair for 6 1/2 hours and played from start to finish. Solid but I didn't like the combat as much this time. Those stupid analog moves were a pain. 8/10.

It's killing me, I'm playing on hard though. This shit is truly hard.

I had to get back to work so I shut it down. Needless to say I didn't get past it yet. In my anger and frustration, I actually miss this guy

This game is just not working for me.

I think the small screen is ruining the feel of it all.

Make sure you're using headphones at least. Half the God of War experience is the audio. Could help if you're not feeling it!

Sounds like you were holding down the triangle at the end of your combo, that's what starts the aerial. If you just go square, square, triangle, that's the armor-breaker and my personal bread and butter combo.

I think it's fine, and to be honest the new controls for dodging, and magic are way fucking better than they were on the PS2. Now I can attack, dodge, and cast magic with such ease.

superb game but a tad short, is amazing that a full GOW experience could be created on a handheld, the only thing i hated was the evade control (why not just L + nub instead L+R+nub)

Beat the game yesterday, it was an amazing experience through and through. Loved the setup to the final boss fight, very shocking and emotional.

To answer directly: because L+nub rolling would mean if you were running forward, it'd be an pain in the ass to parry an incoming attack instead of rolling. You'd have to neutral out the nub first.

This game is truely amazing to look at and play, this makes me think a devil may cry game can work on the psp.

Just finished the game.

The gods are pleased.

The second PSP game I've finished of a dozen or so I've owned.

Good to hear, I want to finish the game but I am saving it for my bus trip to new york. I plan to beat the game before I arrive in port authority.

The demo helped me get used to the evade controls so I didn't find it a problem. Now going back to playing GoW on PS2 I actually found I prefer the PSP evade.

Same here. That guy on 1up was right, it works better on the psp than ps2. I hope the Ps3 version has an option to use the psp controls for evade.

Early on, before the battle with the
Basilisk
, there is a section on top of a wall, right after a save point, with a small building that appears to have a chest in it. (On both sides of the walkway up to this little building are ladders you can kick off the wall, for reference.) Originally there is an archer in front of this building. On one side of the building is a chest. On the other is a barrel (breakable). I cannot get into this building and the walkthrough on GameSpot explains that they were stumped by it too. If you stand on the barrel you can almost get to the top of the roof, but Kratos won't grab or reach for it.

Did anyone ever figure out how to get in? Is it just a red herring?

Once you
fire the ballista at the Basilisk, turn the ballista to the centre and fire away.
A Gorgon Eye awaits.
