With Wipeout: HD's release right around the corner, and with the game featuring unique custom soundtrack support, it only makes sense for the Gaming-Age Musica Electronia collective to release an Album that GAFers could play Wipeout with.

Wipeout's custom soundtrack support goes beyond using whatever music you would like for background music, it also lights up the track in certain modes. Also, Wipeout will ship with 5.1 music, and we are assuming at this point that this extends to any custom soundtrack that is in 5.1 sound.

Though Wipeout has a tradition in using electronic music, they haven't really restricted it to one or two particular genres. Sure, there are some prominent genres, but all participants of G.A.M.E. 3.0 are encouraged to make whatever they want, as long as it can fit the adrenaline inducing feel that Wipeout's licensed songs are known for.

ESTIMATED RELEASE DATE: Thursday September 25th 2008.

Sign up officially to the project by Private Messaging me your EMAIL ADDRESS, with "[GAME]" in the title of your subject. I will then add you to the following list, and send out mass G.A.M.E. messages via an email list (don't worry, I'll hide everyone's emails). This has to be done as I cannot mass message people via PM, regarding important G.A.M.E. info and requests. Also, if you happen to get banned, you can also contact me easily, and I can still contact you no problem.

Second, Subscribe to this thread, so you can keep on top of things. Info will always be posted here first as it arises.

This time there are no limits on the number of songs you can submit. It is suggested that you keep your tracks somewhere between 4-6 minutes to make it suitable for the game. This is not an enforced rule, just a suggestion.

The process for submitting songs are as follows:

1) Forward your song information to me (FightyF) via PM (with "[GAME] Song Submission" in the subject line). We will need:

GAF Handle: even if same as your Artist Name, just pop it in here
Style: can be a phrase/sentence length description, not too long please
Inspiration: make it around 50-60 words tops
Equipment:: hardware and/or software used, monitors/headphones used, PC/Mac quick specs if you'd like
Website: so that interested GAFers can check out more of your music

2) Upload a 24-bit or 32-bit wav recording of your song to a file sharing website (ie. rapidshare.com, megaupload.com, zshare.com do NOT use sendspace as the link expires), and PM Mr. Nash the link to it (again, "[GAME] Song Submission" for your subject. Please name the wav file with your artist name and song title.

3) Post in the thread that you have done so.

In this section, I'd like to list pertinent details in regards to Wipeout. At the moment, we know little about it, so feel free to pose relevant questions and I will email Sony Liverpool to see if they can shed any light on it. For example, some questions I had in mind were, "How much time between the queuing of the song, and the "3,2,1, Go!" countdown?", and, "Will custom soundtrack support 5.1 mp3's?". So post any questions in here, and I will add it to the list. I'm hoping to email them during this next weekend (weekend of July 26th).

Current questions:
-How much time between the queuing of the song, and the "3,2,1, Go!" countdown?
-Will custom soundtrack support 5.1 mp3's?
-will the game support custom front end music?
-will the game recognize playlist files generated by winamp (to my knowledge a standardized pls file), or will it have to be generated by the PS3?

If you would like to get a feel for traditional Wipeout tracks, here are some links to some songs used in previous Wipeout iterations. If you have a good one I don't have, post it and I'll pop 'er in here! The more diverse the better, to demonstrate to all G.A.M.E. participants the flexibility we have.

The wiki entry includes information such as what tracks from Pure and Pulse will appear in WO:HD. It wouldn't be a bad idea to check these tracks out (via playing or watching videos) to get some inspiration.

HOOOLLLY SHIIIIIII how did I miss that news?! Thanks for sharing by the way!

On the bright side, it gives us a lot more breathing space, and will allow us to have it ready to go the very second the game launches. Christmas though...THAT is what irks me.

The previous G.A.M.E. projects took around 4 months from concept to completion. That would mean that this one, if we took the same amount of time, would be out mid-November. I'm thinking it would give me enough time to finish more than a couple of tracks for this one if we aimed for a mid-December release.

What does everyone else think?

ok, here's a quick sketch (WYPT - the one with the Rabbid photo on it)

http://web.mac.com/baka.saru/Music/Baka_Saru.html

it's a bit droney right now but i'd imagine tat a Wipeout soundtrack would be like that anyways since people will be playing the game over this (i hope). i think i'm hitting a few peaks here and there (an running things a bit loud so watch your speakers) but it's 1am so i'm not really paying much attention to technicalities yet :P

Fusebox added!

I'm heading to bed now, and tomorrow evening I'll re-do the timeline.

Until then, everyone can feel free to comment on what they think about the delay, and whether or not we should try another project, or take our time (4-5 months) to come out with a stellar release (where we as artists can complete 2-3 songs for such a release). I'm thinking we should go for a mid-december release date.

My personal opinion is that we should go for it, and take the time to polish this up and build hype. We can set a hard release date, allowing for people to get hyped for it. With this extra time, I'm down with making (with the help of others, of course) a promotional YouTube vid with samples of our music set to existing released videos of the game, sorta like a typical compilation album TV ad. It may seem like a pie-in-the-sky goal, but I'm all for pushing this project harder and harder each time.

The news of the delay isn't concrete, but it makes sense since the game was supposed to be out any time now (or out already?). The December estimation may or may not be correct, it was simply what Kotaku reported.

i'm down for anything...need a new MIDI controller though. is there any rule against recording real instruments and then destroying/manipulating them in your DAW? with no midi controller i'm thinking of doing my basslines with a real bass guitar

No rule against that at all. Heck, record and play it clean without any manipulation. Guitars and DnB would be an awesome combo.

The latest Squarepusher album did a pretty cool job of mixing live instrumentation with electronics.

I won't be participating in this one, but I'll hang around and chat it up, throw around some technical stuff and give feedback! I'll try to find some good articles to fill in those links.

hrmm, I might join in on this. I'll try and find some time to do something for it.

You going to re-do the deadline dates? or is that written in stone?

Again, if you're in, just send me a PM (with "[GAME]" in the header) with your email address.

Awesome! Actually one of the links was going to be to one of yours posts in regards to frequency spectrum visualizers, I thought that was great.

Yeah I'll redo them later tonight (if not in the next hour).

Totally in (PM sent).

Wipeout was the reason I started listening to electronica/techno/whatever name suits you, so it's only right it's where I start!

I've been messing around with this Plug-In for the sketch I creaded. Can anyone else recommend plug-ins that do a "grain shift" type of effect?
What do you mean "grain shift"? And what is that? It looks interesting. Looks like a nifty tool for crushing audio samples. Looks like it has some sort of rhythmic scattering controls or something too.

This is the new toy I'm going to route all my sound through.

Crappy image, it's just for a session recall... but I love this thing. Yamaha N12. I'm sending all my channels out the box, into this mixer. Then I turn the computer display OFF, and balance my channels. This thing has excellent compression, and the best reverb I have available. When I'm done, I record the audio back in, instead of exporting thru Cubase. It sounds very good. I can do a LOT with this thing! And as you can see, it is fucking huge.

Grain Shifter is one of the effects on the Electribe EMX-1. I used it on GAME 1.0 and what it did was latch on and repeat portions of the sound. I could adjust the speed and the mix of the repeat. Ableton's Beat Repeat function is probably a close relative.

Fantastic Idea!

Thanks FightyF for organizing this project, and thanks to all those who contribute :D

Hi! Wipeout was one of the main reasons of why I purchased a PSX, a PSP and a PS3. And like pirahna1, I started to listen this kind of music thanks to the first Wipeout.

I think I can help as a volunteer posting everywhere. I'm sorry I'm a coder so I can't help submitting tracks/avatars/etc.

BTW a couple of useful links:

Wipeout Zone
A great fansite, with a "big" forum. I think they can help the project.

Cold Storage
Tim Wright home site. Musician at Psygnosis Ltd. (Now a SCEE studio), he built the spirit of the Wipeout series music. Sadly Sony didn't wanted to include him in Wipeout Pulse, and looks like they won't include him in WOHD. But he's God so, who knows, maybe he would like to help adding something.

CoLD SToRAGE is currently working on an album to complement the imminent release of Wipeout HD for PS3. Entitled "CoLD SToRAGE HD" it will feature around 7 new and previously unreleased tracks and will be available exclusively from the official CoLD SToRAGE website.

Awesome, I'll let you know what you need to do, and you can simply spread the word. You seem to have your finger on the pulse (pun intended) of this series, as you seem to be already familiar with the fan sites and stuff, so I think you would be perfect for this.

That info about CoLD SToRAGE doing an album for the game is very interesting as well. I think I should update the OP with that info...I'll do that tomorrow morning, I just wanted to check my PMs quickly here, I'm heading to bed right now. Thanks again.

My first shot at official artwork. A proof of concept more than the actual cover, it seeks to incpororate elements of 1,2, and especially 3's aesthetic. tried to capture both a sense of speed, and that of movement within the boundaries of the track itself. blah blah blah. :)

The color scheme is not final. I'll feel it out more as time goes on, but I thought a tiny preview was at least in order. . .

I really love the art modus, but might I suggest losing the ship next to GAME, in the bottom right? It just seems to ruin the flow of the cover. Otherwise it looks totally awesome.

Artwork turned out well-wicked! Love the colours and lineart.
\
BTW some may be wondering why I didn't automatically include their names in the artist list, as I know that they will be happy to join. I did it to get everyone's emails from the get go, by registering in the manner I defined. That way I don't have to fish for them after. So as people join as the months go by, that I will have a current and up to date email list.

so not having a dedicated MIDI controller sucks because i can't use Reason 4.0 but decided to try this ReWire thing and holy shit it's FUN!!! Using all the available instruments in Reason 4.0 within LOGIC using my computer keyboard as a MIDI controller is making this a really enjoyable project for me so far.

I created a nice arpeggiated lead to go with the track...the mix/EQ still sucks but hopefully i can get some tips from the more experienced producers in this thread.

I'm in again (this is officially 3.0 and not a side project?). In fact, I've already got my track more than half done because I thought the game would be coming out sooner. I'd be up for trying to get 4.0 out before the year, I need another project to work on :lol

I'm really looking forward to digging into this (which I can't really do until I get home from Comic-Con). It's been a really long time since I worked with electronic/synth sounds though; for the last several years I've been a lot more acoustic/electric-driven. Anyone have any suggestions for good synth/sequencer software I can dig into? Bonus points for stuff that sounds more on the raw analog side.

Thought I'd post this as it's kinda relevant to what we're doing:

http://arstechnica.com/articles/culture/ocremix.ars

Apparently Capcom approached the Overclocked Remix crew to remix the soundtrack for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Shit, maybe we can get on SCEE's good site and have them toss our choons into the game? This could be a huge leap for the underground community. Check out the article, it's a pretty awesome story.
