Now just need it to come out on the NTSC store next week. That and Smash Brothers would be fantastic.

Wonderboy in Monsterland (Speaking as someone playing the game for the first time) is pretty great :) It's pretty weird how it mixes a mostly linear arcade side scroller with RPG elements, but it's a lot of fun. I loved Dragon's Curse and Wonderboy in Monster World on VC, and although this appears to be the weakest of those three, I'm still really enjoying it.

Also of interest, the game has a pop up menu that appears if you press the minus button. It gives you the option to invert the functions of the 1 and 2 buttons, but more notably it also lets you pick 'FM Synthesizer' sound which improves the technical quality of the sound by quite a bit. I understand a later model of the Master System had the FM sound added?

That's correct, although the hardware with integrated FM sound was only released in Japan originally.

It's nice that they let you switch between both sound modes, as I don't think that was possible on the actual console.

Holy hell M2 is awesome. Why Sega didn't tap them to handle the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection instead of Backgroan I'll never understand.

M2 does most of the work on the Sega Ages 2500 emulation if I'm not mistaken. High quality stuff.

Mmm yeah, although I should point out that the game has to reset if you switch from one mode to another, probably because it picks the appropriate rom or emulator as the game loads. Nice feature though :)

Out of curiosity, are there any other SMS games that have the possibility of FM sound?

The FM synth may have been "higher quality," but for some reason I almost always preferred the stock SMS/MarkIII soundchip in the handful of games I've played that supported both. Phantasy Star in particular.

That's a good question. As far as I know, Sonic 2 does not, but I haven't tried it yet.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most games produced primarily with the Game Gear and western markets in mind probably do not have FM sound.

http://sega.jp/archive/segahard/mk3/soft.html

There's a list of Japanese Mark III releases. Any title with a mark in the FM column has FM sound.

I've downloaded Wonder Boy and that doesn't have the option, so it must be something new. MSX games in Japan (What little there are) have the option too.

Where are you :(

Something tells me it might have to do with Paradigm, but aparently they are now defunct. This is crazy all these studios are closing left and right!

Edit: Just curious, Can someone explain why opaopa (***0pa) is blocked out??

Interestingly, there were actually a couple of non-Japanese releases with FM sound (California Games, Casino Games, Galaxy Force, Outrun 3D, and a few more), even though the chip was only put into Japanese consoles.
Thanks for the updates. I'm a bit unfamiliar with a lot of SMS games so this definitely helps!

LOL. I wish they'd uncensor it though, it's been a whole console generation now. :/

So...after neglecting WiiWare for a while, I'm ready to spend some money. Starting with 1500 points.

FF: My Life As A King or World of Goo?

World of Goo is a fantastic puzzler. I've actually played that one and give it the "Crow Stamp of Approval."

I haven't played FF:MLaaK, so I can't comment there.

Man, I wish we got a translated version of Xanadu 2 over here... always wanted to play that game, even though I didn't like the first PCE-CD Xanadu game. It's always so expensive and hard to find on ebay. :p

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
Oh, so Monsterland is a unique game in the series?
No Arcade/Megadrive versions around?

I guess I could dip then.

fake edit: scratch that, SMS pal games have been horrible so far and probably that hasn't changed yet (and it never will I bet).

Either Mega Man 9 or Toki Tori, depending on whether you're in an action or puzzle mood.

Any chance we'll ever get Cosmic Fantasy II? Never owned a turbo, so I never got to play it.

Or is it stuck in licensing hell?

Well, it's stuck in "Hudson USA's dropped VC" hell. Why couldn't they wait until Ys III was out? :(

Who owns rights to the Working Designs localizations now btw? Did Vic keep them or transfer them to Gaijinworks? If Sega/M2 ever move on to MCD support, I'd be gutted if we missed out on Popful Mail or the Lunars due to that. :(

According to one of my buddies in NA localization, we're getting Smash Bros. and only Smash Bros. on VC tomorrow.

Of course, he could just be completely bullshitting me in which case I would be really freaking pissed since I have waited WEEKS for this to hit but I figure that you guys would like to speculate. Again, I am not preaching that I know for 100% fact but he's normally a pretty reliable guy and all clues point to this being true anyway.

World of Goo. At first you may feel as though it wasn't worth it but keep playing and you'll realize it totally was.

I'll agree with this. I hated it and couldn't understand the hype until I finally forced myself past Chapter 1. After that, it gets MUCH better. Instead of meticulous structure building, you get to clever puzzle solving with tons of personality and a Tim Burton-esque sense of humor.

I was watching a speedrun of Dracula X and when the dude entered the Wii menu to reset the game it really hit home that Hudson picked the worst time to drop their US VC support.

Dash Kappei said:
say I want to talk a bit about the Ogre Battle games, which one's the right fucking thread?!
Do you want to complain about the lack of Ogre Battle or laud the idea that we may be getting it?

When did Hudson USA drop VC support anyway? I've been out of the loop.

Do they not realize we NEED Dracula X?

And the HuCard version of Street Fighter II CE... I know I'm insane, but every time I buy another version of it, a friend of mine gets real angry. I love angering people.

It was said (obviously not officially, of course) that Hudson felt continued VC support would hamper their WiiWare efforts.

WII-KLY UPDATE: ONE WIIWARE GAME AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Jan. 26, 2009

You'll find plenty of monsters in your midst this week, courtesy of the Wii™ Shop Channel. A brand new WiiWare™ game invites you to battle an army of deceptively cute creatures, while a classic Virtual Console™ release pits players against ferocious foes and fire-breathing dragons. Think you've got what it takes to defeat these outrageous beasts? Grab a Wii Remote™ controller and get busy.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare

Niki - Rock 'n' Ball (Bplus, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): Are you in love with those unforgettable arcade classics where the only goal is to vanquish all opponents to reach the next stage? Niki - Rock 'n' Ball is a new interpretation of those games with a completely innovative and unique gaming mechanism. Roll along with Niki through fantastic worlds, find all the ZeLeLi pearls, and liberate your village from cuddly-yet-evil monsters before it's too late. Timing is everything. Jump in the nick of time to avoid landing amid barbs. Hop across the stages thanks to the realistic gaming physics. Snap on the ZeLeLi amulet, transform yourself into Niki Rock, and force even the most obstinate monster to its knees. Explore all the stages and win valuable medals while dribbling through them, alone or with a friend. Use familiar controls in Retro style, or experience novel controls in the Wii style.

Virtual Console

Wonder Boy™ in Monster Land™ (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Alcohol Reference, Mild Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): After the defeat of the evil king, the kingdom of Wonder Land was a paradise…for a time. The peace was broken when a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon struck without warning and took over Wonder Land with a swarm of evil, monstrous henchmen, turning the once-peaceful land into the utterly chaotic Monster Land. Unable to fight, the people now look to Wonder Boy. Realizing that he is Wonder Land's last hope, Wonder Boy sets out on an incredible journey to rid the country of the monsters and defeat the "invincible" evil dragon. Guide Wonder Boy through various environments and dungeons, and defeat enemies using Special Weapons and Spells.
