Bow to your new queen.

Student has tongue lengthening operations to speak Korean

MANY of us struggle to learn a new language – but we don’t resort to surgery to help pronunciation.

But Rhiannon Brooksbank-Jones is so obsessed with Korea she had her tongue surgically lengthened to speak the language better.

While taking lessons, she found she could not make crucial sounds in the nation’s alphabet.

Her dentist suggested her tongue might be too short.

Now Rhiannon, 19, has had a lingual frenectomy, where an incision is made in the skin that joins the underside of the tongue to the mouth.

As a result, her tongue is 1cm longer – and she can say words that were previously impossible.

Rhiannon said: “The surgical procedure was my only option.

“Some might say it’s extreme, but you could apply the same argument to plastic surgery. That makes people feel confident looks wise, and this made me feel confident language wise.”

Rhiannon, of Beeston, Nottingham, is awaiting her A-level results and is hoping to go on to do Korean studies and business management at the University of Sheffield.

The four-year course includes a year at Yonsei University in the South Korean capital, Seoul.

Mum Fiona, 56, said she supported her daughter’s op at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre. She added: “Since meeting a Korean friend, she has simply been fascinated with all things Korea.”

Creepy as fuck.

Creepy, creepy, creepy.

I found her pic online as well. Not my cup of tea. But she does now have a surgically enhanced tongue.

Reminds me of this one crazy chick I knew in high school who wanted so badly to be Japanese that she did everything in her power outside of surgery to make it happen. Creepy.

Oh, and Koreaboo.

That's interesting. I wonder what she'll do once she finds out that Japan exists.

Get her teeth surgically crooked? Stop trimming pubic hair?

(Insert British teeth joke here)

My high school Spanish instructor had the same surgical procedure done to her. She said, before the procedure, she couldn't roll her "rr"s. After the procedure, she said she could immediately roll them.

So what happens to people born in Korea and Spanish speaking countries without sufficiently long tongues? Do they just naturally grow longer with speaking the language?

Why is it that important? I can't even say my goddamn last name correctly because I can't roll my "rr's".

There's a Korean short film about the same subject, except it's about parents who have their son's tongue surgically enhanced so he can speak English more accurately, despite his protestations.

The film ends with drawings by young children expressing their hatred of the English language.

I'm sure every language has native speakers who can't properly produce its sounds. I know several people who were born and raised in the U.S. who can't produce the "th" sound in "teeth". They always produce an "f" sound, like "teef".

Case in point, I present Spokker:

Who said it was important? I'm just sharing my own personal anecdote about someone I personally knew, who had the procedure done. It was obviously important enough to my instructor, for her to get the procedure done, and it made her happy to be able to properly produce the sounds of her native language.

She sounds insane. If she could otherwise communicate and get her point across, the procedure is as vain as a boob job. Pure vanity.

This article here says she has never even set foot in Korea.

Oh, and she even does her bible readings in Korean.
It's one of those things where she clearly has a marketable skill, that is, speaking Korean. Never hurts to know a second language. But she's so kooky that it's going to be difficult to make it work for her while she's running around in a schoolgirl outfit and treating Korea like a playground and Koreans like playthings.
